Guys, i tried searching older post but doesnt quite answer what i am looking for.
a friend of mine updated his iphone 4 to ios 5.0.1 via the usual itunes update (and updated his baseband to 4.11.08 in the process. done by his other friend. wat an idiot for not cooking a custom fw!) and then jailbroken it (i dont know which method/tool he used but by the time i got the phone, it already has cydia installed.)
Now his phone is showing "No Service", and i have tried sim cards from umobile, celcom and maxis but all also same. Looks like it is Locked and i need to find ways to unlock it.
Problem is, i checked the model number and MC605MY is supposed to be a Malaysian unit and it is supposed to be a factory unlocked set! any ideas on what went wrong? any ideas on how to troubleshoot? will Gevey sim actually help, eventhough this is supposed to be an unlocked set?

I would say perform a full wipe and try see if works.
If not, try Restore via iTunes.
Either one should work.

If you strongly believe that it is factory unlocked then the upgrade must have gone wrong. Upgrade to 5.1 and see if you get the signal back.

That is what i'm thinking too... But i would first need to get the ios 5.0.1 and 5.1 both downloaded first, and gotta stitch the shsh to 5.0.1 just in case. Anyway will try that over the weekend and update again.
Guys, just an update on my situation, i hope some of the newbies might be able to gain something from what i did over the weekend.
The iphone4 is currently detecting network! - however i think the signal strength is quite weak, it would disconnect and reconnect at times, but well, isnt that the iphone4's commonly known problem? anyway as long as it is no longer under "no service" status, i consider my job done. Here's the chronology of what i did :

1. downloaded both iOS5.0.1 and iOS5.1 IPSW, redsn0w 0.9.10b5c and the latest TU 5.10.08.
2. using TU, loaded all available SHSH from cydia and saved it in PC - lucky to have both SHSH for 5.0.1 & 5.1 in cydia (if your TU cant detect your iphone, disable all your antivirus and turn off firewall and try again)
3. although this phone in my hand is supposed to be factory unlocked (based on the model number MC605MY) and cooking custom firmware is not necessary, but i am not taking risks. so i planned to use redsn0w to build custom no-baseband iOS5.0.1 & iOS5.1 ipsw. 5.1 because that's the firmware i'm trying to go to without updating baseband, 5.0.1 for just in case it didnt work out and i still can downgrade. (but make sure to stitch the SHSH to custom 5.0.1 ipsw otherwise the downgrade will fail. also use redsn0w for stitching)
4. however i failed to build a custom 5.1 - keep on popping error "unrecognised build". A few google search made me realised that i should be using redsn0w 0.9.10b6c instead.
5. so while waiting to download redsn0w 0.9.10b6c, i put the iphone in DFU mode, and used redsn0w 0.9.10b5c to "deactivate" the phone.
6. kicked it out of DFU and then turn on itunes. itunes detected the iphone4 and proceeded to activate it. i set it up as new iphone and without restoring any backups. but itunes did prompt me to update carrier settings and i click OK. after update, still no change, "No Service", cant detect network. all this while i have yet to restore or upgrade, the phone is still on the same firmware as when i posted the first question last week.
7. unplugged everything and go to sleep (ok actually this is not necessary, lol)
8. the next morning when i wake up, i realised that the iphone battery went flat. i forgot to charge it. (yeah, iphone battery sux big time, i know) so i plug up the charger and wait for it to boot up so i can continue my work. went brush teeth and bath.
9. went i came back, i noticed that the are signal bars on the iphone. i was like

"WTF just happened?"
10. just to be sure it wasnt a fluke, i unplugged the simcard and put on another operator's sim card. "No Service" again. sigh...
11. but as usual with all electronic devices, i restarted the phone. signal detected.

i didnt know what went right but with 2 sim cards and signal is detected, it's mission accomplished. all without custom firmware or restore or backup whatchamacallit.
Finally i can close case, but thru this, i learnt quite some thing, and that restore/update/JB an iphone and ipad are different in some ways. i still prefer working on ipad. very easy, lol.
