Aye my mistake ... if from within iphone using terminal

1. Open terminal app
2. You'll be in 'mobile'
3. Change mobile password first with passwd command
4. Done with that, type in su root and put in the default password (alpine)
5. This will bump you to root access
6. run the passwd command again.

done

There's no need for normal user to install mobile terminal just to change the ssh password unless you need to run terminal commands everyday just for the sake of having fun

That's true. If you don't install ssh, there is no need to change the password anyway.

If you install ssh, other people can access your iPhone via a network and if you didn't change your default password which everyone knows, then your iPhone will be open for everyone to access.

Because ssh is a service (like an open door to your iphone filesystem). When you install SSH, it will have a default password (alpine). If you are online with wifi and an attacker knows your IP address, he can log in to your phone and steal data and do nasty stuff. So changing the default SSH password is like changing the lock on your door. To be extra safe, turn off the SSH service in sbsettings if you don't use it.

Extra info - SSH do not use extra battery power nor memory when idle.

You need to restore your 3Gs using sn0wbreeze 2.9.1. Google sn0wbreeze guide 2.9.1 Redmondpie. You have the iPad baseband and therefore cannot simply upgrade using stock firmware.

As I mentioned, the problem was you upgraded you 3Gs without using a custom firmware. Your 3Gs is using an iPad baseband and one you have an iPad baseband, you can never upgrade the phone using stock firmware, it has to be via custom firmware.
