Hi all sifu sifu....

I am thinking to take up MT biking again, after departed with my bike for about 20 years. Yup, long long ago when by MTB was stolen just before SPM.
Now waistline is really growing and really need to put a stop to it. Previously was amateur which frequent KSH when they initially set up at TTDI.
Do hope to join you guys during your regular session.

But first, need to get myself a bike. Anything good to recommend with budget around 4-5k for AM bike?
Don't really have a particular preference as really lost touch with the current trend.

Basic preference as follow, without knowing what it the real impact sad.gif

- new bike (not secondhad)
- hard tail
- prefer europe/us made than Taiwan (but not sure if my budget could get anything)

cheers!

Ryan

Yeah, the design n branding sort of the main factor for now.
I Like Specialized the most, but I is way above my budget.

Guess Merida is sort of the most sensible choice.

Eh, really?
May be me still stuck w de wrong concept w Giant since secondary school in the 90s tat Giant is lousy brand.

Btw, what would be a decently good gear set from shimano? Recommend to get a full set rather than mix n match?

Ok, now got the point. Giant >>> Merida.
Will take your advice and avoid then.

Budget wise, 4k is just a starting point. May stretch to 6k if really need to.
Just wanna get a good base frame+gear set to start with- cost this will likely to last for long. Other items can be change and upgraded in stages as gradually being poisoned for more. Hope i get the concept right.....

Fren brought me to a shop in bukit tinggi. Forgot wat name but Selling Polygon only. din really see anything I like as the set up is more for low-mid range. May be coz de frame also for entry?

Then later went over to KSH, seems like they just. I've few shop away, and having a full shop rather than have. Most set they sell are FS, with nonco and cannodale frame. Seems SRAM is prefered there instead of shimano.

I am more keen of spez, where could I fine more such bike?

Bro kucinggatal, still KZ?

Infact just off from Spez shop at KD. Not much HT tail offered.
Also price range a bit upper class. 4k only can get alivio mix set. The frame really so worth it ?

Btw, how is SRAM compare to Shimano? Are they at par?

Took today off.
Official reason to HM: go to school to check standard 1 registration procedure.
Real reason (HM doesn't need to know) - to check on bikes

1st stop is Merida Ss2. A few good package are offer around 5K++. However din remember the details much as already decided not to take Merida frame.

Then move to bike pro near by. Scale 40 and scale 35 caught my attention as in the right price range. (5-6k).

Scale 35 is carbon frame w entry level components. Still decent w X7/x9! Avid 5s brek n RS Reba suspension. The only b**** is 20 speed!

Scale 40 on the other way is sort of their highest range aluminum HT?? All is fine except SLX shifter n cassette. Am thinking to folk out a few hunderd to upgrade to SLX.... Is this wise?
Lastly, the color is dull grey(not really big matter) n the frame welding ain't really top notch.

Also caught a glimpse of scale 20 but that's way above my budget.

Last stop, unintentionally reaches Keen to Cycle, (some activity in Sunway, kekekeke). Meet w Yoon, very friendly chap n share lot of info w me. There was a Fuji bike w full XT package, below 5k..... Very heavy though, 12++kg.

Now spez is out of my league, seems Scott is my best choice.

Any guide on the 20 speed on scale35? Just live w it or should consider upgrade ?
Or take scale 40 n replace the SLX?

Not sure if I am XT paranoid but there is big different n shifting between XT n SLX...
Hope sifus here can provide some enlightenment

Okie, have time and really cannot rush to burn my hard earn money.
Will go checked out Giant first. Was wondering wtheck is senaik??
Luckily google is my best fren( before u guys ranting, again....)

Will try to ular out tomorrow biggrin.gif

If 20X is enough, then me would probably take scale 35. Despite entry level for carbon frame, ther shouldn't be any regret right?

If you kiasu then go for 30 speed la.  tongue.gif

In practice you dont need that many gears in trails. But more doesnt hurt.  smile.gif

I use 10 only  sad.gif

No la, no need kiasu. Read somewhere in tis thread tat as long the big is biggest and small is smallest then It should be fine. Me tend to agree as we nvr use all the gear specifically.
However, Just 2x crank is sort of limiting.

Wat happened, last nite this thread was locked around 11pm. U all scared hantu make post here or wat?

just back from Sen Aik, Had a nice chat with the taukeh.

Comparing XTC 0: with Full XT gear set & Avid Elixir 7 which is >> Scale 40's SLX/XT mix & Avid 5

However, i like the DT swiss rim on Scott more.
As the XTC cost few hunder more than Scott, am thinking to use this into upgrade the SLX on the Scott.

Dunno how to compare the FOX float RL against RS Reba RL.

Guess u can tell my heart is toward Scott. Probably as i do not like generic/popular brand as much. (like i will not chose Toyota).

Any last word of wisdom?
