Let me get this...

You offered a solution to use RT-N16 and run G off it to simplify the connections. That means 1 less equipment (WRT54G) from 47ronin's original proposed.

I replied with an alternative solution to just get the RT-N56U that will replace the RT-N16, 8 port Gigabit switch, WRT54G (for wifi G) and WR841ND (for wifi N). That's replacing 4 equipments with 1 equipment. Don't you think the RT-N56U is worth RM 450 in this case?

I think it is you that requires better reading...
*
The answer is no, the n56u is not worth RM450 in any case.

But I surrender, OK, you win. I offered a solution and you did too. It seems that your solution is better.

Sorry, 47ronin, looks like you will have to spend the money for the Asus RT-n56u and entirely redo your diagram. Hope you have enough ports to plug things in and no plans for using VPN in the near future.

I'm gonna go read a better book.

ps: jchue, you should really really go read the thread again. I wasn't stepping on you because your solution was not as good as the others.

what about my soluton? ur solution nice but need to buy new hardwares... and is not cheap
if @47ronin want solution and no spending money then my solution... he already got the wrt54g and others.. (except giga switc i think... which i already suggest him no need buy)  rclxms.gif
*
Hey bro, mine also no need spend money what? Surely mine is better. :-) I also forgot what your solution was already. I think 47ronin got fed up and went home. He needs to let us know why he needs a switch. Maybe he wants to locate the switch somewhere else. And why 8-port, maybe he got more things to plug into it.

47ronin, when you wake up, please reply. As you can see from the timestamps, we all cannot sleep because of you. If you're a girl, you probably be feeling real good with all this attention. :-)

Guys anyone tried a load balancer on 2 unifi connections? What was the outcome? Assuming I have 2x 20mbps connection... with a load balancer can the both connection combine and give me 40mbps during peak ie. torrenting/streaming?
*
Yeah, that will work. But you have to set your load balancer policy so that it spreads your outgoing BT requests evenly over the 2 WANs. The incoming data will then come back over the same WANs. To the other side, it just looks like 2 separate BT clients from 2 different IPs. Some people load balance based on IPs, so one PC goes WAN1, next one go WAN2, then back to WAN1, etc. If like that, then no speed increase for a single PC.

For streaming, let's say youtube, it's only one connection so it'll only go out and come back in using 1 WAN port. Unless you do aggregation which is beyond the scope of this discussion and my brain.

Disclaimer: I could be totally wrong on this though. :-)

Anyway my company used to have 3 x TPLink RT480+, cheapo dual wan load balancers, to 4 x 1mbps Streamyx but I've never tried BT on it before. Now we're just using one BIZ20.

Any UniFi users here using VPN? My friend is looking for a router with good performance for the office for UniFi BIZ20 that works with VPN passthrough. A bonus would be a built-in VPN server. Doesn't have to have WiFi. Must be cheap so looking for home routers. Say budget at RM500.

He has an Asus n56u but VPN from him to his supplier's VPN server doesn't work with this router. The DIR-615 supplied by TM actually is OK but it's hanging or slowing down too often (due to bittorrent :-)

In the future, he may need incoming VPN but prefer not to have a separate box so a built-in VPN server would be a bonus. Only 2 or 3 person needs to use at any one time.

So far on the list: Vigor 2130 $460 and RB750GL $250. Any other recommendations?

He's gonna give me the n56u if I can get something working for him.

Is this Zyxel given by TM? You'll need to return this ADSL router when you terminate Streamyx within contract period.
*
Oh ya, very important to return otherwise they keep your account active. Then few months later kena big bill. I read about case like this here or another forum.

Thank you guys for the feebacks.
I learn a lot from your valuable output.

I'm highly sorry if I offended any1 of you.

No worries and why in the world would you need to apologize for asking a valid question.

May I ask why you planned to have a 8 port switch?

and what software you used to draw your diagram in your ori post?

No, bro. In retrospect I'm the one who should be sorry. I sincerely apologize to you for my sarcasm & the things I said or implied.

If I could I'd offer my hand for a shake. But since we're behind our PCs, would you FTP to my server? That would be a handshake, TCP wise.

As for the root cause of all this, it's all 47ronin's doing with his question and PowerPoint diagram! I think it's time we gang up on him. :-)

bro, can you explain why higher ram is useful for router?
*
More ram means the router can have a bigger connection table, more firewall rules, more queues and rules for QoS, more features running like BT clients, download managers, file servers, etc.

IMHO the most important is the connection table because this one is very dynamic and can grow out of hand very fast especially when using BitTorrent or there are many concurrent users. That's why you see cheaper routers hang or slowdown when running BT. Just like a PC when it runs low on mem.

However more ram also needs to be complemented by a faster CPU otherwise the router cannot keep up with all the connections.

Anyone else experiencing bad routing + slow speed?
*
Routing to which host? I'm getting usual 10 hops to my webhost in the US. 7 to twitter.com. 6 to cloudflare SG.
Route looks the same to me. Pings are high though 200-300ms to the first two, 15ms to SG.

What IP are on? I tried both 175.139.x.x and 210.195.x.x. Routing looks identical.

But speed seems to be fine here in Sg Long. Where r u?

I'm getting connection timeouts to my shell in US. Confirmed the server itself is up and running - others can access. Connections to a server in Korea are also very slow. Last week was getting good speeds (same ip, did not disconnect).

110.159.*

Also every single filehost I try (rapidshare, etc) I get 10 KB/s or timeout after a few mins.

In TTDI now.
*
What a coincidence, I was at TTDI shophouses this afternoon. Complain to TM, reboot router?

But for Rapidshare me also really slow downloading. Quote from jDownloader forums:
http://board.jdownloader.org/showthread.php?p=192566
QUOTE
a) I've tried with browser (Opera Next)... and it is as Jiaz said... rather weird speed throttling technique from RS - the browser stops exactly at 1,8772 MB then it waits about 50 seconds and then downloads another 1,8772 MB wait again 50 sec. etc...

b) Then I've tested RS with Nightly - no connection lost but speed fluctuates from 15-200 KB/s. Unfortunately mostly in lower ranges.... (25-30) - but we know why - see a)

Indeed really stupid technique from RS...

for torrent downloads ... is it a MUST to set the max connections to 50?
or else the router will crash or somesort?
cos my fren also torrent .... he din experience crash before...maybe his default is 50
*
Depends on the router. For DIR-615, for example, start with say 200 connections and slowly edge your way down till you find a comfortable number. I think I had mine at 100 for quite some time with no probs but router slows down after 2 weeks or so. So just reboot every 2 weeks.

Current router, RB750GL, my max is set to 5000 but I haven't got many torrents to download right now to test it. At the moment, ~800 connections total.

Hi guys. Unifi just been installed on my house. The contractor said I need to leave BTU n router to be on for 2 week since I the first subsriber on my road.
He said to let the laser fully fire to unifi.
It that true?

and one more things, I using FTTH. It is safe if I disconnect the fibre on the box inside my house? the one look like box and got connector like S/PDIF.
can I remove and plug in back? since the wire are messy like hell.
Thanks
*
That's news to me but maybe why not? Maybe fibre expert can chime in here.

You can disconnect/reconnect it but be careful. Don't bend it too much and don't step on it.

how to check uptime on Dlink DIR615 ?
Cant see the uptime under "Status"
icon_question.gif
*
Telnet in and type "uptime".
CODE
BusyBox v1.00 (2010.11.09-01:14+0000) Built-in shell (msh)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

# uptime
03:35:22 up 3 days,  1:04, load average: 1.00, 1.00, 0.99

There's one more way from the web browser. Let me check.

Here it is:
Change some settings in the DIR-615, then when you click Save Settings. Keep an eye on the URL. You should see something like this.
CODE
http://192.168.0.1/tools_admin.php?uptime=263223&random_num=2012.2.21.3.37.29

263223 is in seconds. Convert to days is 3.0465625 days

Good question, I don't think so. Just change something that doesn't require a reboot. Like toggle telnet on/off.

Btw, did anyone notice my IPV6 tag.

using unifi without pay for some servis? how?
*
No, lah, I use 6to4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6to4 which is:
CODE
6to4 is an Internet transition mechanism for migrating from IPv4 to IPv6, a system that allows IPv6 packets to be transmitted over an IPv4 network (generally the IPv4 Internet) without the need to configure explicit tunnels. Special relay servers are also in place that allow 6to4 networks to communicate with native IPv6 networks.

More info here: http://www.kfu.com/~nsayer/6to4/

There's also Hurricane Electric as an alternative.

Of course, router must support ipv6.

Quite interesting, after I setup ipv6 on my router, automagically all my PCs on the LAN got their own v6 IP. No need separate DHCP server as ipv6 has auto configuration!

I also set my PPPOE to ask for IPV6 from UniFi but "IPV6 request rejected". C'mon TM.

Hardest part was how to get the browser to use IPv6 to connect to LYN. Safari seems to prefer IPv4 over IPv6. In the end, I just block LYN IPv4 address in my router. I know, stupid solution.

I did it just to see the swimming turtle. http://kame.net
Another site for more info and to test your setup. http://test-ipv6.com

Also notice quite a lot of torrenters using IPv6 already.

can u just tell how u did it directly? thanks bro  smile.gif

http://ipv6.forum.lowyat.net no more already. Now forum.lowyat.net supports both IPv6 and IPv4.

I only know how to do for my router, RB750GL. What's yours? Anyway this thread probably off topic for IPv6. Suggest we move to one of the other IPv6 threads.

Since it's for the Draytek 2130n why not move it to your Draytek thread, http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2114099/

Did you know www.v6.facebook.com has an IPv6 address of 2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c::3

My IPv6 config for my Mikrotik RB750GL.

CODE
/interface 6to4
add disabled=no local-address=175.139.x.x name=6to4 remote-address=unspecified

/ipv6 address
add address=2002:XXXX:XXXX::1/16 advertise=no comment=6to4public disabled=no eui-64=no interface=6to4
add address=2002:XXXX:XXXX:1::1/64 advertise=yes comment=6to4subnet disabled=no eui-64=no interface=ether2

/ipv6 route
add disabled=no distance=1 dst-address=2000::/3 gateway=::192.88.99.1%6to4

175.139.x.x is current IP address.
2002:XXXX:XXXX:1::1 is the IPv6 address calculated based on the above IP.
This needs to be updated every time you get an IP from UniFi.

IPv6 DNS from OpenDNS: 2620::ccd::2 and 2620::ccc::2

I'll be buying a TP-Link WR-841ND router for UniFi use. Not familiar with this model at all, other than reading up at klseet.com, so got a few questions.

- Are the ones in the shop UniFi ready?
- If not, which is the latest/best firmware for it?
- Planning to get 2, 1 as a router and the other to extend the wifi using WDS. It supports WDS right?
