Hi there,
I have just installed Unifi VIP 5...
I just wanted to know is it normal to key in the dns server address??
As for me i had to key in manually each time i try to connect a new device to the wi-fi connection...

Moreover on my galaxy note apps such as viber n wts app keep gettin disconnected as this nvr happened when i am using streamyx....i am very curious about all this...
Please help...
*
Shouldn't have to key in DNS everytime. Your device should pick it up from the router. DHCP is on right? Make sure you're devices are configured to pickup both IP and DNS from DHCP.

Are you using DIR-615? If yes, for disconnection, one thing you can try is change Channel Width from 40 to 20Mhz. That will disable Channel Bonding which seems to cause probs with some devices. Also means that your max wifi-N speed will now be "150mbps". No more "300mbps".

Sorry, no idea for the black TM router. Login to the router and look for something called Channel Width, if it even has such a setting.

you can pay via occ.unifi.my instead...

hi snowfish, how did your in-house unifi installation go? Did you get the Microtik to do trunking to your TV or did you manage to splice your ethernet cable into two?

btw, I eventually got the RB750GL and having lots of fun configuring it. But not doing trunking yet. Still using my homeplugs for the STB.

What is the standard password for this Huawei vDSL modem? The stupid contractor don't want to give me.
*
Yeah, they normally don't give the password to the BTU. How long has it been installed? Can you still get to the login page? Even if you have the password, eventually TM will remotely set the unit's firewall to drop local connections. Hope you can get in before then.

You can always get from one of the forum sellers. I got two RB750GL from mfa333. Other option is Landasan but they forever no stock one, cheaper though.

I'm planning to un-subscride Axtro.  Now hardly watch, only my daughter watching Nick/CN/Disney.  The rest are repeating and paying >RM100 / month.

Now with our IPTV, what you guys think?

I on the TVBox yesterday, and it slows down other activities like surfing, etc, some sites i surfed even got error.  Off it and solve prob.

If upgrade to vip10, will it help? Can I limit the TVbox's cap / rate? if yes, how?
is VIP5 or VIP10 free channel the same?
The channels are quite limited.. what you guys think?

Thanks.
*
I'm also on VIP5 and watching HyppTV does not slow down nor affect my internet in any way. I think better call TM and let them know.

As for the channels, yeah, very limited. Even for kids only got Nick Jr & CBBs.

Thought I do a test just to be sure. Here you can see my internet going at 5mbps with the iptv on at the same time. (I think it's nTV7) Later try with Luxe HD and see how it much bandwidth it needs.

3. Your daughter will be missing Nick/CN/Disney channel, however HYPP TV is not that bad since junior channel also got = Nick Junior (Dora The explorer, Go Diego Go, Little Bill, Blue Clues ) - ok la.

For HD channel - Free - Luxe HD, Travel HD the rest of HD (Universal, SyFy, NatGeo Adventure) RM9/month/channel

4. Do not worry about ASTRO movies channel & you won't missing them, once u got UNIFI, you can download sampai muntah all night long 24x7x365 days.
Also got CBeebies and that weird baby channel. I spend all my time downloading stuff until no time to watch the movies. :-)

7. Some Geeks hate TM router. But normal human should be OK.

LOL, agreed, the TM router actually worked quite well for me. I used it for 2 mths before I changed routers. Only thing is not to stress it too much with torrents. Until yesterday my neighbor's DIR-615 is probably close to 4+ months uptime but I had to reboot to get a new IP for uploaded.to.

Why not just do it again online? Though you won't be able to choose the same username and phone number until tomorrow.

layman questions...

is it better to leave the router on at all time; if  notice downtime/slowing down, inconsistency of speed then only go reset?

or is it better to off it when not use, even only few hours. or off everyday (before go to work/sleep) On/Off many times may not be good for the router?
*
I leave mine on all the time unless I'm going to be away for more than 2 more days. I think on/off too many times not good for electronics. My personal opinion is for a few hours, just leave it on.

bro, i read somewhere, for IPTV bandwidth = 8 Mbps

need to find the source back.

BTW, what tool did u used for benchmark ar? (Geek will always be geek. muhahaha)
*
Yes, I think I read the same thing also, 8mbps. But in any case it shouldn't interfere with our internet cos the Huawei with its fibre connection can take much more. I don't know how fast it supports but the Huawei is an ONT in a GPON network where the G stands for Gigabit!

That one is the Interface status page from my Mikrotik router. This is a true geek router and relatively cheap too. 5 gigabit ports. Mine no wifi. Here's the whole status page again. My iptv is off now as you can see.
Attached Image

Next one is from my office BIZ20. I remotely login to check status. As you can see, not much work is being done.
Attached Image

Very configurable. My fav feature, the QoS which is very configurable. Below you can see my QoS queues. Q7 & Q8 are my Bittorrent traffic. I prioritize them lower so I can browse, email almost like normal even while BT is running full speed.
Attached Image

Security wise also quite good. I use some firewall examples from the internet but still learning about this. For example, you can ssh to my router and try to login, after a few login attempts it will blacklist your IP, after that you can't even connect anymore. Here you can try, my current IP is 175.139.163.25.

Settled for TP-Link only, N16 also plan to buy not yet materialise. angan2x saje.

56U different chip, RAM also big.
*
Vigor lagi teruk $480 for non-wifi version. I think 700+for wifi version is it? Crazy?
n56u slightly cheaper but still too expensive for me. also got glitch where the hardware NAT must be turned off for VPN connections. Dunno whether it's been fixed in latest firmware.

Having said that, I'm guilty of using Apple Airport Extreme which is also expensive. But nice design and got Apple logo so it's ok. whistling.gif

hmm whats that software use to monitor the connections?
*
Mikrotik routers have their own software called winbox, Windows only. I'm a Mac user so I run mine using Wine & X11. That's why the UI looks odd.

The router has web login, telnet, ssh & snmp and also a API for 3rd party tools. For the latter there's an iphone app, TikTool, and on sourceforge, a php project called rosinfo.

ohh man i cant do that cos my stimix router is too far from my unifi router,my stimix cable also cannot reach to unifi router  sad.gif
*
Bro, leave the Zyxel out for now. Turn it off so it doesn't interfere.

Check your DIR-615 settings for WiFi. Left menu, click "Wireless Setup" then click "Manual Wireless Connection Setup"

Is "Enable Auto Channel Selection" checked? If it is checked, uncheck it, save settings and try again with your tablet.

If still cannot work, go to Advanced and Advanced Wireless.
Is Bandwidth set to "20/40 MHz(Auto)"? If it is, change it to "20 MHz", save settings and try again with your tablet.

Do you have any other devices? Notebook maybe? Phone? Can they see your DIR-615 WiFi and connect to the internet? Just to confirm it's not a bad unit.

Rich? What you're asking requires a little bit more from the hardware. When something comes out and meets (even exceeds) your requirements, you're expecting it to come cheap? Expensive? Maybe... But what is RM 450 these days?  whistling.gif

My advise? Get something that you can use. Not something that can meet you halfway only to disappoint you and you go round and round the never ending upgrade path.
*
I agree with 47ronin. n56u is overpriced for its feature set. Draytek even worse, 700+ is it? Maybe it's gone down. TP-Link 1043ND is a good economical choice.

You parents must be rich for you to whistle at RM450. That's how much my auntie makes in 2 weeks cleaning houses for people. Some people are lucky.

fyi, i bought a second draytek (now got 2) for RM480
thats the one got wireless 2130n.... so it replace the dir615 without anything else needed
its not cheap yes... but like me in a house with all crazy 24/7 torrenters its the only router i found that can keep all under control and enjoy super pings in gaming
How did you get that price? I emailed Draytek last week and they quoted me RM460 for the non-wifi Vigor2130. I mean at RM480 for the 2130n then it's a clear choice over the Asus n56u.

I hope they'd reduce the price for their non-wifi model too. I don't need another dual-band wifi router. I'm still using my trusty Airport Extreme from early 2010. Another rich people router. :-) Well, it was the only router with the Apple logo that I can find at that time. Oh and dual band too.

47ronin's requirements are simply and that he wants to run wireless n and b/g together and without any speed problems. So you're saying the 1043ND is able to run 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual band?  wink.gif  The 1043ND would not solve his problem.
No, I'm not saying that.

But the 1043ND will solve his prob. Btw that's not the solution I offered. My solution to him doesn't require a 1043ND nor a new router.

Go read 47ronin's ori question. (the one with the nice diagram)

You can wink.gif again after you get your facts right.
