Asking for some advice here, whats the best router to use for Unifi? With the least amount of extra modification and configuration.

The router they provided is getting worse shakehead.gif. Can't even surf net properly unless I use wired connection.

I have done some research and it seems that TP-Link routers are recommended. Which model is the best? Need to install custom firmware? Some posts in this topic noted that there is a Unifi sticker on the box, implying that you can straight away use their default firmware, yet Klseet site includes custom firmware for download.  rclxub.gif

TPLink 841ND works well and is real cheap. If you buy in LYP, just bring to 4th Floor svc ctr and they can flash for you (same firmware as the one on klseet). The UniFi sticker doesn't mean it is already flashed. Don't buy from CZone, they want to charge extra RM10 for flashing when it can be done for free upstairs.

If you want more fun, get a Mikrotik RB750GL (no wifi) or RB751U-2HnD. Both around RM250. The former is the one I'm using.

So I heard that the reason we can't just use any router is due to the VLAN tagging for IPTV. What if I decide to discard (aka. not use) IPTV? Means I won't connect the cable from the IPTV set top box to the router.

Can I use other routers in this case?

Nope, because the internet is also in a VLAN.

Both Internet and IPTV are 'tagged'. You need a router which can untag these packets or that understands VLAN tagging. Not all routers do this. However having said that if you have TM's D-link router you could use it as a 'switch' which acts as a VLAN untagger which untags VLAN500 which allows you to use any router out there !

I suggest you go either for TL-WR841ND or TL-WR1043ND. Both these TP-Link models now have official firmware that supports UniFi.

Port Klang person here. Got my Unifi up and running this afternoon only to have to die out on the very same evening. Some ISPs just want to watch the world burn

Back on trusty old Streamyx at the moment

Use command prompt and type ipconfig. Use the default gateway IP address to access your router. From there I think u know what to do. Its best u fork on some money and get the TPLink

Usually its not very hot, just slightly warm. Make sure you place it in a well ventilated area. DO NOT place your router/BTU in a closed cabinet. It will reduce the lifespan tremendously.

Hello guys.

Unifi installer is coming to install unifi at my house on Tuesday. Do they still give the sucky router now? If they do, I might as well buy a TP-LINK in advance so I can swap the router once they install.

I won't be using the IPTV. I'm getting Unifi just for internet. Does TL-WR1043ND makes a good replacement for my case? Or is there a better alternative out there? Thanks. Can't wait. smile.gif
