I just did mine last because my MIL insist we 'move' to the house on 1st Jan for feng shui purpose.

My MIL, colleagues and friends all have all sorts of 'creative' ideas:

Before the moving day.
1. clean the house
2. prepare mix of rice and salt and throw them around the house, especially the corners. Leave them for 24 hours or more before clean them.
3. prepare wood/charcoal, rice, cooking oil, salt, vinegar, sauce & tea. Place them near the sink or in kitchen. Symbolize you have all the neccessaries (sorry, I have problem spelling neccessary).

On the moving day:
1. avoid quarrel and disputes
2. Do or hold auspicious/meaningful items when walk into the house. My brother in law insist we roll a pineapple from the main door into the house before stepping in. Some said throw shillings, some said bring ang pows, oranges of lokam.
3. On the lights and fans.
4. Boil water
5. Cook something to eat. For me I went for the easiest - tong yun.
6. Invite some family members and friends over and enjoy food. We ordered pizzas.
7. Turn on musics and TV, if any.
8. After that leave at least one light on for 3 days.

I understand that all this thing will bring whatever good thing to the house and owner. But I see the list is so long that I wonder each of this thing do bring any meaning or not.

Like

1. avoid quarrel and disputes  -> what this mean?
2. Do or hold auspicious/meaningful items when walk into the house. My brother in law insist we roll a pineapple from the main door into the house before stepping in. Some said throw shillings, some said bring ang pows, oranges of lokam. --> what this mean?

and so on and on.

Not that I wanted to do these, but to avoid in laws and family nagging later, I did it. 1st, avoid dispute. It's a feng shui saying like don't brinv or create negative vibe to ur new home. Concept is the same as when during chinese new year we are to avoid quarreling.

Also the usual concept on why chinese wear red, bring lokam when visiting ppl, give ang pow during cny. Cos it means auspicious and luck. Bringing these into house also means bringing wealth and luck into the house cos oranges, lokam usually link with illusion of gold.

Not trying to sound like lillian too, since coincidently I have all these things lying around (happen to have oranges in my fridge and just got 2012 red packets from company), no harm bringing them to the house. As for the tan lou, since I don't have and not planning to buy one, I just skip it.. I'll admit the pineapple is overly done, but it's fun to play with it. Also my hubby loves eating it, no harm buying one for rm1.50.
