just to share my experience...
for those who are using papago x5 on their GNex...
franco kernel will make your papago unusable.. you will stuck at unsupported resolution 720x1184 no matter what you do

spend 8hours yesterday finding the root cause and after flashing here n there... i can confirm franco kernel is the culprit

currently using AOKP rom build #14 - super buttery smooth

for those who experience auto brightness too dark... this rom corrects it for you without any extramods/patches to be flashed

then they took an arrow to the knee.
Btw, anyone knows how to change brightness by using the notification bar? I heard somewhere they said ICS has a feature to change brightness at homescreen.
*
changing brightness and some toggle setting are a customization/mod done by a few custom roms... for example AOKP was the 1st one and then CM9 Kang.. some other roms has follow suit... check their screenshot for more details

im currently on AOKP build 14

QUOTE(djlah @ Jan 9 2012, 12:58 PM)
ARHD 2.1.2 still in Android 4.0.2. AOKP is 4.0.3 now.
should I change to AOKP too?  hmm.gif  hmm.gif
*
im not saying ARHD is not good enough... but.. as an update addict and very very very small hints on whats to come.. last update was 20th December seems to be tooooooo long for me

1st time flashers i would still recommend ARHD since its rock solid stock with only performance n batt life tweaks

but and update addict cant wait that long... AOKP updates once or twice a week.. adding new features and smoothness as updates comes in.. the only thing not working in AOKP is cannot read RFID NFC tags.. but Android Beam works fine

build#14 is buttery smooth n battery life is great.. average 20-26hours
buttery smooths im not saying its super fast... its actually super smooth, transition/animation/operation wise
most build updates just needs to wipe cache n dalvik then flash the latest build.. then im good to go

the reason i jump to AOKP is
- auto brightness is fixed (for those who have dark auto brightness issues)
- frequent updates (im a update addict)
- active in twitter & his thread at rootzwiki n xda
- great battery life. average 20-26hours
- navigation bar quick toggles
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

but as i mention... he will update on rootzwiki 1st... after few days then he update at xda
so its worth to surf rootzwiki a lot as well

me & zeal bought from DirectD
my set was yakju France set
zeal set was yakjuzs Japan set

but after unlock/root/flash custom.. we are all the same

no warranty issue.. all things are intact n working great whistling.gif

based on my friend's (shaun yeap) experience, let's just say DirectD don't take warranty as easy as SME. In other words, bad.

My friend had one unit that clearly has serious screen issue, mainly its dimmer than usual and serious screen banding, if its SME you would have gotten a warranty set already, but the seller kept telling his story on how he can't see the problem. To make the matter worse, he wasn't very friendly about it either, its as if my friend is on the wrong side or something. doh.gif

thank god for irenic to be there, otherwise I doubt they would even accept my friend's warranty.
*
yup i second that... DirectD sales are not that friendly... ONLY suitable for those who are the type of..
- ask price as per advertise
- ask got free gift or not (wont argue much if there is no free as well)
- know the device well thru reviews/youtube
- after checking hardware n software.. straight away pay n thanx

they are all the quiet type sellers

well.. im in this buyer category.. so if you really concern about warranty.. better go SME.. besides.. this is not <1000 ringgit phone anyway

Those users on AOKP build 15 - can you guys use the recovery mode ( select from power button). I could boot into recovery but all selections on the menu couldn't work. So I have to use the hard buttons to boot into recovery to get stuffs done

Added on January 11, 2012, 8:29 pm
The GNex is definitely a better performer than SGS II and is less " hot" . Only disadvantage is lack of ext SDcard and slight poorer camera shots
*
i have no problem reboot>recovery from the power menu.. i have done this on aokp build#15 6 times (testing diff kernels)

QUOTE(benny888 @ Jan 11 2012, 11:31 PM)
I never test Franco kernel. When i was on ARHD I use James Bond kernel. Whern I switch to AOKP 4.0.3 since build 13 till 15 - I use Apex V5
Excellent battery life. Example on standby with 3G always on with hourly updates on my RSS and Tweeter this is the usage over 7 hours : 3 % ie about 0.4 %/hour. It is much better than the 1-1.5 % I have when on stock rom and stock kernel

[attachmentid=2635700]
*
mind sharing where u get apex v5 kernel? i only see its together with Axiom LTE version rom

QUOTE(sordanny @ Jan 12 2012, 04:36 PM)
are these custom ROMs better than the original ICS??
what are the main improvements over the original
*
this is what i have tested so far

ARHD - Android Revolution HD
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10518-rom-andro...-ics-legendary/
- based on GNex factory image stock rom
- no visual tweaks & enhancement
- applied performance & batt life tweaks
- rom optimized to EXT4 partitioning as per his Superwipe Lite
- minor updates for bugfixes and newer version of stock apps
- major updates only after 1-2 days Google do an official update on our GNex
- if you prefer fast/stable/like stock rom.. go for this custom rom
- average battery life (compare to stock)

AOKP - Android Open Kang Project
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11455-rom-andro...ro-milestone-2/
- based on Google AOSP version 4.0.3
- lots of additional features (nav bar quick settings/fix auto brightness/softkey mod/1% batt mod/color mod)
- buttery smooth transition and animation
- frequent updates of bugfix and new mods
- a bit above average battery life (compare to stock)

GummyNex
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13406-romaosp40...nex-050-011012/
- based on Google AOSP version 4.0.3
- lots of additional features (refer his thread.. long time have not use this rom)
- comes with custom kernel for better battery life
- periodical update of bugfix and new mods
- better battery life.. average smoothness
- HTC like selection sound... not like our stock tek tek tek sound

Bugless Beast
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12874-romaospan...-bugless-beast/
- based on Google AOSP version 4.0.3
- lots of additional features (refer his thread.. long time have not use this rom)
- periodical update of bugfix and new mods
- need to refer to his download page to check for latest updates

if you really want more performance or more battery life
you can go 3 ways

1st way (not advised for beginner or intermediate android addict)
install setCPU and tweak your CPU speed
undervolt each CPU frequency u set for better battery
expect Sleep of Death or random reboots if your setting is not nice

2nd way (not advised for intermediate android addict)
flash a custom kernel after you flash your rom according to you android version
install setCPU and tweak your CPU speed
undervolt each CPU frequency u set for better battery
expect Sleep of Death or random reboots if your setting is not nice

3rd way (safe enough for beginners)
flash a custom kernel after you flash your rom
no need setCPU.. just use your phone as normal
expect some lags especially after unlocking your screen
you can ask to their forum topic if you encounter any issues
hardly you will encounter sleep of death or random reboot
confirm better battery life

so.. for those who are new to flashing.. try flashing roms 1st... try out a day or two.. after u found your best rom.. then you can venture to custom kernels

to answer what is the best rom n what is the best kernel...
it super subjective..

i have found my fav rom..
and since last week till now.. im seeking my best kernel...

currently using AOKP milestone 2 + testing Apex V5 kernel

sweat.gif sorry for the long post

it should take 90sec-2minutes at first boot if you coming from a full wipe

on franco #8 last time... i use spareparts/change dpi/official apk for gtab.. all has the same error.. if use other kernel.. no such problem

Just want to ask a question for AOKP + franco kernel users.  How smooth is the UI? Is it as smooth as stock S2 (which runs at 60fps)? How is the comparison like? I'm probably getting my GN next week, but would like to know how much of an improvement AOKP + franco is to how smooth the UI is smile.gif
*
if you want super smooth... just put AOKP... let it use the stock kernel.. it is seriously super smooth
i have tested leankernel & apex v5.. if smoothness is you objective.. use AOKP with stock rom.. since build #14 its buttery smooth whistling.gif

im typing while updating to build#17 whistling.gif

Is aokp nice?
Just some noob queston, after u flashed ur rom. Like there is update what should u do? Flash again? I dont want to flash ahain when there is new update
*
when an update comes... you need to read the 1st post again from a-z
some updates just requires you to do wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache and then flash

some updates requires a full wipe! usually the dev will state on the 1st post

read the changelog as well... some updates have bugfixes.. some update are adding new features

do also read a few page of post on the thread so that you can see some flash addict stating any bugs or what happen when they flashing without full wipe

then you will know whether you can skip the update or the update is critical to ensure stability and good batt life

if you dont like flashing rom more than once a month... then better stick to stock rom..
any updates on stock rom for sure:
- dont require you to do any wipe
- updates are small in size
- all your settings and data untouched
- rock solid stability with 100% working features & functions

Hi guys.. need some help.. just got my GalNex yesterday.. having trouble trying to connect to my wifi at home.. can anyone tell me how to solve this problem..? would really appreciate it..
*
if you cannot connect wifi only at your home and can connect at other places like mamak, starbucks, mcd
then you have to figure out your wifi router is operating at what channel...
if you live in a place where a lot of people using wifi... your router may use a very high freq channel to broadcast the wifi signal and some phones/pc/laptop dont support that high channel

try set a lower channel (anything below 10 as a guide.. im not sure our GNex support until what channel) then see how it works

most wifi cant connect issue is router related problem

Do you recommend this over Franco or Apex 's kernel ? I have decided to switch back to Apex V5 after testing out Franco b12 on AOPK Milestone 2 for about 2 days. I noted Franco kernel drains battery about 50 % more than Apex V5
*
nope... i'm replying to r4g3 battery drain issue on leankernel 1.6.1
leankernel has great batt life during sleep... but i notice yesterday.. it has a slower rate of charging as well! 20% more time... can clearly see on the battery graph when i charge on lean kernel n charge on stock kernel

im not going for franco... because my papago cannot work

yes... thx for your suggestion... im sticking with Apex v5 kernel... this is the kernel that has the smallest effect on AOKP buttery smoothness yet have the greatest batt life...

cant share a screenshot yet since i need my phone charged with a good batt when im travelling this weekend
will share it soon

so for flash newbies i alwiz suggest ARHD first.. if they want more.. then lets go for AOKP
