You are assuming that all investors know how to invest to ensure they will be better off in the long term with equities, and/or they have the risk appetite willing to accept up/downs that equities can and will bring.

In reality, that's not the case.

But but but... this is LYF Finance and Investment Forum wor... people who post here must have possess some "qualities" right?

FSM also did a writeup on the fund's "amazing" returns in 2012 and telling investors not to expect it to repeat as its due to writeback of a bondholding previously written down/off.

My opinion from an academic point of view:

1) Bond funds as part of one's portfolio is used to lower the volatility. It should be used defensively.

2) Therefore when one chooses a bond fund, it is better to choose one which is more stable rather than one where its return yo-yo up and down (high volatilty).

3) Hence do not be too happy with a high and low type of bond fund. Let those yo-yo thrill come from the equitiy portion IMO.

Note:
Std Deviation = how far left or right of the average (ie. outliers).
Thus, if say something has an Average returns of 10%pa & std deviation of 6%, we can generally say that generally, the returns ranges from 4% (10%-6%) to 16% (10% avg + 6%)

er.. statistical gurus & mathematical geniuses, please correct if i'm in lalaland yar.  notworthy.gif
*
Further to add to your explaination, a Std-Dev of 6% actually means that there is 2/3 chance of the return falling between 4% to 16%.

More confused? Good! That is why you need to engage licensed financial planner aka financial guru to guide you. Wink wink

One small question..., is RHB Investment a good fund house?

My internal data is still verry much Public Mutual, hence I don't have access to other fund houses internal data.

I am thinking of putting my PRS contribution into it as currently RHB-PRS has zerosales charge and the lowest annual management fee. Btw, RHB-PRS will be using feeder fund strategy on their existing Golden-Life series of fund.

Anyone here has done some analytical work on that series of fund? Appreciate the sharing.

Wong Seafood,

A small little suggestion from puny Pinky...

Why not deploy technical analysis/charting/whatever on a fund's benchmark movement as opposed to its NAV movement as entry trigger?

Reason why I have this idea is simple, let's take an example of FBMKLCI dropping 20% but Fund ABC only dropping 5% due to the FM making the correct decision to liquidate investments and raise cash right before the crash. Applying your technique, the 5% drop won't trigger a BUY. But Malaysian equities had dropped 20% yo...Fund ABC with its cash rich position, would be in a great position to grab some stocks at a discount...and unitholders should top up at this juncture!

A good fund manager should have mitigated the downside risk in the fund management unlike some stupid fund manager cough cough PCSF %#^#€!

It is the job the fund manager to do the timing in and out, your role as unit holder is to make sure you do regular dollar cost averaging to fulfil your financial objective. Yes, it is boring, it isn't pretty, but it gets the job done.

One more thing I notice, the FSM thread has overtaken the Public Mutual in terms of activitiness. Sign of times, sign of times.

Akauntan Buruk mari tongue.gif

Cost: RM2,500.00

Current valuation of your units: RM2,469.96

With FSM, the (profit)/loss is calculated by COST less VALUE, thus
= RM2,500.00 - RM2,469.96
= RM30.04

You are right, the moment u make a purchase, the Sales Charge is considered a "loss"
*
Why nobody consider the zero sales charge PRS leh? That way, you need not have to make any "loss" at all.

It seeks like I am the only one very excited with these zero sales charge PRS in low-yat forum lar...

Personally I am topping up whatever I am putting into KWSP with the same amount into a zero sales charge PRS. I am putting my nest-egg aka retirement fund on steroid.

KWSP money is already locked up long term with inflexible withdrawal, for me personally I don't want another huge chunk of wealth locked away, I can control my urges not to take out my UT monies unnecessarily to indulge in worldly pleasures.
*
Once upon a time I had an epiphany from some wise financial coach; he is an insurance agent... a very senior and experienced Group Agency Manager from GE.

He asked the attendees, why KWSP is only 23% of our salary but it remain to be the biggest chunk of our net worth?

He asked us, what happenned to the 77%?

The take home message is; force saving works. Force saving with zero sales charge and very low or zero annual management fee lagi work.
