FC Porto is one of the oldest football clubs in the world, and the most successful Portuguese team in international competitions.
Despite having lower marketing/television revenues than big teams from Spanish Liga and English Premiership, Porto is one of the most competitive teams in the world.
The success is due to a very good management at all levels in the clubs.
The moto of the club is win, win and win again. It is always the objective, no matter is the opponent or the competition.
European titles are each season part of objectives of the club, even they usually are not favourites.
For his success, FC Porto invests mainly in young players from Portugal and South America. Due to tight budget for Champions League conquest, the recruitment is done very carefully.
The recruited players are usually unown players with very high potential.
A good example to show Porto management politic is the current keyplayer of the team : Hulk.
He was playing in the 2nd japanese division, and was not very successful in this team. Porto contacted him for 5.5 M€.
Today Hulk is considered one of the best players in Europe, and his recision clause is at 100 M€!

2011-2012 Season overview

Porto had a brillant 2010-2011 season, they won the Europa League and finished the Portuguese Liga without loosing a single game !
Falcao surpassed this season the record of Jürgen Klinsmann (15 goals) by scoring 17 goals in a single season campaign.
However this success had a price. Falcao left for Atletico Madrid and the manager, André Vilas Boas, left for Chelsea. This turned a little bit more difficult to turn the conquestion of the Champions League realistic.
With almost the same group, but the assistant Vitor Pereira promoted as manager, the club entered in a transational season.
The first half of the season shown at first a lot of issues :
- The players seemed to have lost the fighting spirit, because they interpreted the Vilas Boas departure as a betrayal (he sweard a lot of times in public that he would not leave the club for the new season). Because of this, the club lost too many points in the group phase of Champions League and was "relegated" to the Europa League.
- The lack of a good striker to receive Varela, João Moutinho and Hulk passes was evident.
- The lack of confidence on Vitor Perira as coach.
However, the second half of the season is probably going to be much more positive :
- Despite not so good condition in the first half of the season, Porto is first in the National League.
- After loosing against Academica in National Cup 3-0, the players woked up and stated to play very well. Last exibitions in Champions League against Shakhtar and Zenith shown that the players are back to play at their full potential.
- One or two new strickers will be recruited for the rest of the season.
- Vitor Pereira seems to conquest little by little players and supporters confidence.

30.01.2012 - Guarin will go on loan with purchase option to Inter (Italy). He is a promising player, Inter can buy him for 11M€... It could have been a higher price in my opinion, but the coach seems to not like him that much
