If you visit some performance shop they do charge you a hefty price too. 4G18? So far I've not heard any besides kille-rom.

I've personally did dip my toe on getting know the ECU. It's not easy. Other than knowing programming & electronics, you need to do alot of trial hunting and sniffing. Pulling the signal out to read is already stressing the whole brain, custom design a firmware flawlessly without breaking the block is another near impossible task. You need to be near developers level to touch it. Else, you'll just be the technician, getting the rom and injecting it into the car.
