Only your laptop unable to find the wireless network?
Try using your phone / tablet and see. Could be a problem with your laptop instead.

And they named it as PortaWifi which is quite a funny name for a modem device.

Actually you should ask yourself whether you want the internet connection to be portable or fix permanently at home?
if portable then get a mifi.
if just for home usage then get a router.

and 21.6mbps modem / mifi is good enough to be used.
