THE leader of Sarawak's Hua Kee gang started off with petty crime until 1997.

Wong Leh Yin, alias Lee Long, allegedly became linked with the death of a rival.

Within 10 years, he allegedly became involved in everything from illegal logging to robbery and price fixing for basic items like eggs.

To outsiders, the 43-year-old Wong was a respected businessman in Sarawak and he was often seen in the company of prominent businessmen and VIPs.

Some of these men later became politicians or political players in the state, said journalists.

It has been alleged that Lee Long and his gang members then set up legitimate businesses that served as fronts for their illegal activities.

Journalists said Lee Long's influence even covered the press.

He said Lee Long's real name had never been published in newspaper reports before, until the Borneo Post released his real name on Thursday.

Syndicate using Lee Long’s name to extort money



SIBU: He was once Sarawak’s most feared underworld figure, a man few would have wanted to mess with.

However, the long arm of the law caught up with Wong Leh Yin alias Lee Long when Bukit Aman police mounted a state-wide operation, ‘Operation Cantas Kenyalang’ in April 2007.

The man was sent to the Simpang Renggam detention centre in Johor under the Emergency Ordinance 1969 and subsequently to Marudi under the Restricted Residence Act 1933.

Today, Wong, 49, has business interests and owns oil palm plantations.

While he has turned over a new leaf, a syndicate is believed to be cashing in on his previous infamy, bandying his name to extort
money from hotels statewide, including Tanahmas and Kingwood, two of the town’s biggest hotels.

Later, Wong met reporters and disclosed that he had come across several cases whereby his name was used to extort money.

“I have nothing to do with the syndicate…they (syndicate members) are using my name to threaten and extort money.

“My name has been used to extort and threaten businessmen, particularly hotel owners in
Miri, Bintulu, Mukah, Song and Kapit.

“A man, masquerading as me, contacted two hoteliers from Marudi and Lawas and duped them into depositing over RM50,000 and RM10,000, respectively, into a bank,” he said.

Wong said that about 4am today, he was informed that a man posing as him, contacted the Tanahmas Hotel manager to deposit RM3,500 into the same bank account.

“The man warned the manager if he failed to pay up the amount. Two hours later, probably the same man called the Kingwood hotel manager and demanded for RM2,700,” he said, adding that the manager of another hotel was extorted of RM600 in a similar manner.

Wong advised those who were extorted by people using his name to report the matter to the police. — Bernama
