I got an Xbox for my bday but it was only 4GB, now i need to put in the disc to play all the time and it gets really hot sometimes, and i think it will kill the rom easily.

can i get an external HDD to install the game? i was told that even if i put an external hdd, and install the game, i still have to put the disc to play.

am i missingsometing?

yeah you still need disc to play, but installing the game will makes game load time faster, and more importantly less usage of the disc reader. I find that if you buy the 4GB version for an offer price, then add a 250GB HDD after looking in the web for some good deals, the price is quite similar to a 250GB model.

Another advantage of getting HDD for the 4GB console is the ability to play the original Xbox games, provided they are in the backwards compatibility list. This is something that a 250GB console cant do, because there is some sort of patch inside the original HDD that enables such function, not within the console.

Its normal for it to be hot. Mine is also hot. Just make sure the sides are not blocked as the internal cooling with cool it properly. Hot air = cooling working. rclxms.gif

Adding an external non-MS hdd will not work since you are only restricted to 16gb max. Spend some cash and get a compatible internal HDD or MS ones. I did that to my 4gb slim since I prefer matte surface over the glossy 250GB. Advantage? Save files and profile on 4gb, games, demo and DLCs on 250gb. rclxms.gif cool.gif

That's roughly the price at most shop. Try checking at garage sales to benchmark. I got mine for 1.3k. Some shops might sell cheaper.

First and foremost, Xbox was made to be played on a TV, not a pc monitor.

Secondly, upgrading your optical drive(DVD-ROM) = your xbox is modded and hence, why did you spent so much on your games unless you bought originals. Software upgrade for original xbox is free for life till they change system/upgrade to a newer generation console.

You can buy a tv box converter to split out the audio from HDMI to normal RCA/3.5mm jacks but I've no knowledge about this stuff as I do not use it but I've seen people using it for their PC monitor.

tv box converter to split out the audio from HDMI to normal RCA/3.5mm jacks<

there no need to spend extra rm XXX on that
just buy another XBOX AV cable(the rca one) modify it, make the connector slimmer, then you could connect it even with HDMI port in use
those Microsoft design these connector to block HDMI port to force the user to buy they slim XBOX AV connector

Here is the fact. You can use thumb/ pendrive but it only detect 8Gb or was it 16GB, (i cant remember). These USB speed arent any faster than the xbox ROM, so installing game in USB drive arent making it any improvement. However upgrade your xbox from 4GB to larger HDD will improve. Most ppl use the USB drive for save games only. I believe any console shop can upgrade for you original or third party HDD.

PS: If you gonna use any external USB on xbox its gonna be permenant anyway, why dont just get a build-in ones?

Sure, but it's safer than those mechanical 2.5" HDD. My Xbox 360 never been dropped, yet the 250GB is dying.

alternative way its to use a pendrive max 16gb for your game installation?

If your xbox is modded, you can. Else, no use making ISO/images of it as the optical drive only will read the originals.

And as far as I can remember, xbox can only utilize 16GB max on the pendrive.

Well, yea but hardly enough. I don't play with my xbox so often, my 4gb has nearly ran out so I went and grab a 250gb hdd to add-on. Forza 3 with DLC already took up 2.5gb.

DLC can be downloaded back easily since it's tied to your ID, but save games? Once it's corrupted (along with the hard disk and you have no backup) then it's gone, forever.

Couldn't agree more than that. I save all my save files on the 4gb, which is totally dedicated to the save files. Aside from that, MS also put their essential files from updates there also. So, even 4gb is limited to certain extend. Plus kinect install its driver on the 4gb. whistling.gif

I do not own a 4GB version, but I would imagine that you can always free up some spaces by deleting TU for any games that you do not play anymore. Yes, deleting the cache can't be done individually, and it's tedious but hey cleaning up is good aight? whistling.gif

Yeah, but right now, for Gears of War 3 alone, I have backup not only on my removable drive, but also on cloud storage, just in case... whistling.gif

BTW, game saves are normally small enough to upload and sync and download quickly even on a 1mb shitmyx connection.

Good for you then, I rarely see the sync dialog box pop up when I started Gears of War 3. Three times until now to be exact, since I enabled the cloud storage.
