Your motherboard M4A87TD/USB3 is socket AM3 while the Bulldozer FX-4100 is an AM3+ processor.

They are not compatible with each other.

You shouldn't even attempt to insert the FX-4100 into the socket. biggrin.gif

Motherboard that is compatible with the AMD FX processors will be labelled at AM3+ board. This board will come in a black colored CPU socket instead of AM3's white colored CPU socket.

There are a few 800 series motherboards from ASUS which are able to support the FX processors via BIOS update.

Best is you check through the ASUS website & see whether your motherboard is listed as compatible with FX CPUs.

Update: TS, you're out of luck.. Only ASUS 890FX and 890GX are able to support the FX processors via BIOS update. sad.gif

It is not true that only the 890 chipsets are able to support the FX processors.

The 870 chipset can also support the FX processors. See below.

Bro, you've misinterprete what I said. Only existing boards from ASUS with the 890FX/GX can support FX processors via BIOS update. As for other chipsets, you will have to purchase a new board that comes with AM3+ socket. Older ASUS board with 870 or 770 chipset with AM3 socket will not be able to support the FX processor. The board you've shown me is a new board from ASUS that comes with AM3+ socket & uses the 870 chipset. Pls refer to the link below:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showth...re-motherboards

We are talking only about ASUS motherboards as TS asked whether his ASUS board is able to supports the FX processor.

Dont simply say someone is "wrong"

AM3 socket does support Bulldozer by BIOS update. Even not fully supported, (as the BIOS is still beta till now) but still it is supported.

I think that mobo is older batch that came before the bulldozer launch
you should not blame the gigabyte but AMD instead as AMD delayed the bulldozer for donno how many months. MB manufacturer has no option but to release the board way early before the proc exist in the market. and its quite understandable why most AM3+ MB cant even support bulldozer before BIOS update.
