Wonder why suddenly revive that game and bring to Steam. Age of Empire 4 coming?  
I've read about many ppl who done that for Russian key they bought from CD key sites, it do works and you should be fine.

Only problem is you should ensure your key is a legit retail key and not stolen or generated from key gen. In any case, should the key become illegal, Steam will just remove it from your account.

why don't just use junctions ? how u gonna "add" on top of your 2tb ?

the easiest is use windows dsk mgmt and JBOD it/extend volume or so its called in windows disk mgmt..

no need to loose data/reformat.. u still need to do the initial format to put the FS into NTFS and change to dynamic disk

before you extend volume

keep 1:1 back up is raid 1 aka mirror... but you will loose 1/2 the storage space la..

but since you mentioned you lack of storage space i failed to see the purpose of raid 1 aka mirror

fyi raid 0 = stripping = no redundancy 1/2 data is stored on 1 disk the other 1/2 on another disk ..get read/write improvement without redundancy

bought it around USD7.50 just for SP, play twice then uninstall. Gonna replay? probably after few year...
