Seal the speaker up will give you good response but sacrifices low frequency response.
Better you leave it original or stick the stuffing at the woofer magnet there, the ported enclosure are calculated according to the subwoofer.
Maybe you can try out replacing the interconnects first.

The port noise is another case, that is the turbulence, but not related to the calculation. That is why you can see high end speaker has special technology like flow port in B&W speakers. That port is not a joke, really can't hear the port noise unless you put your ear besides it and running at high volume.
