Hi all, I have few things to ask all ICE sifus here.

Just install a used alpine 6.5" type s component speaker on my car. Does it really doesn't have a crossover or have i been cheated by the seller? Felt strange because component speakers supposed to have crossover right. Is this speaker a good choice for rm300?IT's a used set though.

One more thing I don't have amp on my car. What kind of amp suitable for this type s speaker? 2 channel or 4 channel or mono? I'm pretty much still blur in the ice world.

it comes with a crossover. since you dun have the passives, you'll need 4ch amp now.

some simple crossovers can be very small, some are as simple as just a single capacitor attached to the speaker. however u can search for 2nd hand passives in shops, some are new and unused

Is passives what you called the box thing that component speaker has? It functions is to prevents the tweeter from trying to reproduce frequency it's not supposed to. Is that correct? Why need 4 channel if doesn't have passive?

The seller says type s doesn't need crossover because the speaker has a condenser. Don't know what that is. Probably he kept the crossover for himself.

Yes, the box thing is called a passive crossover.
It channels the proper freqs to the mids and tweets. Proper freqs means your tweets will be protected.
If Typs S doesnt need passives, i believe Alpine would cut cost and not provide one in the package.

Without passives you need to use 1ch per speaker = 4ch. Gains will be individually set. This is an active system.
The other option is stick 2 speakers into 1ch = 2ch. AND the tweets will need a small (cheap) capacitor to protect it. Freqs will be quite messed up. This option is for the budget minded and is a temporary measure at best.

Your best choice is to source for a similar passive or get a 4ch and go active.

ah yes that thing. My type s doesnt have that passive crossover (Now I know what to call it ;P). Now that you say it, I also agree the tweeters not so good. Maybe type S just entry level speakers for Alpine.

You have the same type S speakers? No passive crossover like me too? Maybe you have amp powering it because I can't really hear the bass from my mid and the tweeter sound is so so only. Fortunately I have the active woofer install by the great howiechoo biggrin.gif. Overall not really satisfied with my type S. Maybe buying a used set was a bad move. It probably has taken alot beating from previous owner. Should have just went for a new set of component speakers.

I assume Type R is one up above type S and Type X is way up in the alpine world. If type E is entry level than what about type G?

Hehe I have the crossovers but I'm using the morel Maximo tweeters n crossovers instead albeit the morel speaker sounds clearer but I needed the bass so didn't really mind cuz d morel tweeters made up for the clarity

My morel speakers n alpine crossovers r behind....the alpine tweeters r sitting in my store lol

Trust me u need an amp to push the type s n u will be amazed cuz I was running without amp for a year plus and when I got my alpine amp it made all d difference

ah now i know what to do. get an amp and new pair of tweeters. maybe that can change my view of this type s speakers. ATM i feel like getting type s is a mistake. just a little bit better sound than my previous standard speakers.

try to avoid putting amp all this while. it seems once you step into ice world having amp is unavoidable. survey few shop for 2 channel amp but all of them say straightaway go 4 channel as 2 chan and 4 chan price not much dif.
