I plan to buy a notebook from United States.

Notebook: Lenovo Thinkpad W520
Weight: 5.95lbs (2.7kg)
Price: $1,699 USD
I have no experience in purchasing products from the United States. I wonder how much I should pay for taxes (local, US) and courier fee?

Any useful information will be great.

Thanks in advance.

Warranty-wise, it would even charge you more.

Why would you get it from USA when there are local resellers/ suppliers?

I wanted to get a Thinkpad too but how do you get it to ship it here? Unless you get it from eBay (certain sellers will ship to Malaysia).

You have someone in the States to help you deliver? Or are you renting a US postal address?

Notebook should be tax-free as far as I know...

Also, Lenovo has this thing called 'doorbuster' sale once in a while and you'll get a 'huge' discount if you manage to get it at the right time.

Laptop/computer is exempted from tax once entering malaysia. I have bought one laptop from california (in april this year), deliver via USPS and poslaju handle the item. No tax. smile.gif

Get someone who can buy the stuff for you and ship back to Malaysia. There's many who provide such service here.

Is poslaju reliable? The notebook is quite expensive. I afraid that the notebook reaches my hand with some parts missing. Do correct me if I am wrong.
To be safe, always use a private courier like GDex/ FedEx/ DHL.

From what many have been saying, PosLaju service isn't really reliable, since they're not private companies where you pay for a guaranteed delivery.

Can Poslaju replace the security seal on the package with their own? My package were sealed with USPS consignment note and security tapes.

If you worry on that part, recommended using private company like USP/DHL which will cost you bomb, or ask someone to buy on your behalf.

I pay using Foreign Telegraphic Transfer via Public Bank since the seller only accept Paypal for registered US address

there are 2 charges: the sender (malaysia banks) and the receiver (seller's bank account). But the charges vary on different banks.
we pay for those 2 charges, unless the seller stated otherwise. In my case, i pay the bank charges on my side and the seller handle the charges on their side.

I have asked Malaysia custom worker when I get block for checking the luggage during arriving at LCCT!
They said that complete set of computer will not be taxed!
Only computer parts will be taxed!
So, if you buy a full set of computer, you will not be taxed
