F-22 Raptor Jet Crashes At Tyndall Air Force Base

An F-22 Raptor jet crashed near US 98 on Tyndall Air Force Base Thursday afternoon. The pilot was able to eject safely and there were no injuries on the ground.

The News-Herald reports the plane crashed just south of Panama City took place about 3:30 pm and noted that Bay County Sheriff’s deputies and Mexico Beach Police officers were on the scene to assist with traffic control. A HAZMAT team was in place as well. A stretch of the highway was shut down after the accident, and an Air Force spokesman added that the pilot was under medical supervision.

“The pilot safely ejected and is in the hands of medical personnel,” said Herman Bell, Tyndall Air Force Base spokesman.

The Air Force Times reports the single-seat stealth fighter jet is part of a program that has been plagued with problems. The Raptor cost $190 million and since 2008 pilots have reported hypoxia-like symptoms. There has been at least one fatal crash involving an F-22 and the fleet was grounded for four months in 2011. The Air Force eventually acknowledged problems with the plane’s oxygen supply. The cause of this particular crash was not yet known.

Sources on the scene said the plane crashed and burned, the wreckage ending up in a wooded area near the highway and not far from the Air Force base’s drone runway.

Tyndall Air Force Base is located 12 miles east of Panama City, Florida. The 325th Fighter Wing is stationed there. Tyndall Air Force base had a population of nearly 3,000 at the time of the 2010 census.

The F-22 Raptor plane that crashed Thursday is manufactured by Lockheed Martin.

Iran has officially unveiled a domestically designed and manufactured hovercraft named Tondar (lightening), becoming the fifth country in the world to possess the know-how.

The hovercraft, manufactured in two combat and logistic models, was unveiled in a Monday ceremony attended by Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi in the Iranian southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

" The Islamic Republic of Iran is among the five countries possessing this technology and it is able to meet [the country's] domestic and exports-related needs through its various designs, " Vahidi pointed out.

The defense minister noted that different types of Iranian military products, including missiles, artillery, and unmanned aerial vehicles can be installed and
used on the hovercraft.

" Mass production of this hovercraft will considerably boost the operational capability of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy. "

The Iranian minister mentioned coastal patrols, conducting offensive and defensive reconnaissance operations, taking part in asymmetrical defense operations, carrying personnel and equipment to support Iranian islands and coastal areas, operating as sea ambulance, and taking part in relief operations as the main functions of the hovercraft.

Apart from meeting military needs, the hovercraft can also carry passengers and cargo in the areas without docks, help Iran Red Crescent Society with relief operations in flood-hit areas, control fishing vessels, transport staff and equipment of offshore companies and help with both onshore and offshore environmental studies.

Iran started a self-sufficiency campaign in the defense industry and launched numerous military projects soon after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
The Islamic Republic has repeatedly made clear that its military might is merely based on the nation's defense doctrine of deterrence and poses no threat to other countries.

F-22 crashes at Tyndall, pilot safe

The US Air Force confirms that a Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor crashed at 15:30 local time on 15 November, as it was returning to Tyndall AFB, Florida.

The pilot ejected "safely" from the F-22 and is being evaluated for injuires by base medical staff, the USAF says. Tyndall is an F-22 training base, but the pilot was not a student, the USAF confirms.

The crash occurred about 0.2nm (0.4km) east of the drone runway at Tyndall and near Highway 98, which was closed briefly while hazardous materials units responded.

It is the first F-22 crash since a fatal incident in November 2010 which killed Capt Jeff Haney and led to a series of investigations and groundings over glitches and perceived faults in the stealth fighter's oxygen system.

"There is nothing to indicate that it is related to that," the USAF says.

The service will convene an accident investigation board to determine the cause of the crash.

Until the Tyndall crash, the F-22 fleet had completed 21,000 sorties without the loss of an aircraft. The USAF had removed nearly all of the operating restrictions on the type imposed after the November 2010 crash, with the exception of high-altitude flying above 40,000ft (12,200m).

The latest crash reduces the USAF inventory of F-22s to 182 aircraft, with the last serial number delivered from Lockheed earlier this year.

A Quick and Cheap Power Projection Alternative for Japan

by KYLE MIZOKAMI on Jan 26, 2012 • 4:53 pm

user posted image

Helicopters and air-cushioned landing craft ferry troops and equipment ashore in a computer-generated conceptual image of an afloat forward staging base. The AFSB concept provides an afloat platform for in-theater military operations and enhances the U.S. military’s force projection capability.

Over at the USNI Blog, Galrahn posted a link to a marketing article by the shipping company Maersk Line. Galrahn calls it “ A Potential Plan B for Seabasing “. The article discusses converting Maersk commercial container ships into Afloat Forward Staging Bases, complete with everything from a 14 V-22 Osprey-capable flight deck to the ability to load LCACs at sea.

This may be a “ Plan B ” for the U.S. Navy, but it’s also a compelling “ Plan A ” for other countries, in this case the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces. A converted shipping vessel would plug a lot of holes in Japan’s limited power-projection capability. The ships would still have a fundamentally defensive function, and would accommodate the following roles :

• Support of amphibious operations. Japan has a need for dedicated amphibious ships, particularly in the Senkaku Islands. A ship like this could provide command and control and act as mother ship to a number of smaller ships, particularly Joint High Speed Vehicle-type ships. Another vessel would have to carry LCACs into theater, but that’s where the Osumi-class LSTs come in.

• Disaster relief. A 1,140 foot ship with a 140 foot beam could pack a lot of disaster relief supplies.
Build in extra water desalination, electricity generation, and an extensive medical suite on par with
the Wasp-class amphibious ships and you’d have a capable platform for responding to natural disasters of the 3/11 variety.

• Sea control. Due to their size, most of the islands in the Senkaku chain are incapable of basing warplanes, meaning that air power has to be projected from Okinawa and the mainland. This could be a compelling and affordable first step for Japan in the direction of fixed-wing naval aviation. Modifying the Hyuga-class helicopter destroyers for fixed-wing is not a good solution : American big-deck amphibious ships such as Wasp and Makin Island can only accommodate 13-15 F-35Bs in a sea control mission. Hyuga and her sister ship Ise are only half as large in displacement, with a flight deck 50 meters shorter than the Wasp-class, which doesn’t bode as well for F-35 accommodations. A float Forward Staging Base has lots of flight deck.

Such a ship would be very useful in defending Japan’s far-flung archipelago, carrying a small F-35 complement, ground troops, transport helicopters, medical services, command and control–the whole package, or some mix of it. Offload the helicopters to Hyuga to increase deck space for F-35s. Even better, have more than one AFSB.

There are downsides. Having the bridge 2/3 of the way down the flight deck is not ideal for aircraft, especially fixed-wing. A converted shipping vessel is not built to take damage the way purpose-built naval vessels are. The ship would need to be strongly defended. But you can’t have everything.

Can’t buy a big amphibious vessel outright ? The Diet can’t decide to fund a disaster relief ship ? Don’t have $8-13 billion dollars to fund a supercarrier ? AFSB can sort of do all of these things, for less money! It’s not a perfect solution to everything, but it’s a far more affordable one.

Arms race explodes as neighbours try to counter China

November 19, 2012

PHNOM PENH: An arms-buying spree across south-east Asia will be the elephant in the room when almost 20 world leaders meet in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, on Tuesday.

Defence spending across the region increased 13.5 per cent to $US25.4 billion ($24.5 billion) last year and was expected to rise to $US40 billion by 2016, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said.

Flush with economic success and wary of China's military expansion, countries are acquiring sophisticated sea- and air-based arsenals that include dozens of submarines that can operate in secret.

The institute said Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia had increased defence budgets by 66 per cent to 82 per cent from 2002 to last year.

Indonesia was buying submarines from South Korea and coastal radar systems from China and the US, Vietnam was getting submarines and combat jets from Russia and had acquired Israeli ballistic missiles, defence analysts said.

Vietnam's defence budget for this year is $US3.1 billion, a rise of 35 per cent over last year. The Philippines has a huge wish-list of equipment it wants from the US and is also approaching Japan, South Korea, France and Britain for defence acquisitions.

Singapore, already the fifth-largest weapons importing nation, looked like keeping its title as the region's biggest spender, allocating $US9.7 billion this year on defence, 24 per cent of its national budget. The city-state's purchases included combat jets from the US and submarines from Sweden.

Thailand was planning to buy submarines and warplanes from Sweden that would eventually be fitted with anti-ship missiles, while arms deliveries to Malaysia jumped eightfold over the five years to 2009.

For decades, much of south-east Asia spent little on weapons except guns and tanks to respond to internal threats. But they are now building their defence capabilities amid tensions over territorial claims in the South China Sea and other squabbles that underscore the role of the East Asia Summit.

Leaders attending include the US President, Barack Obama, the Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao, and the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

Defence officials estimated 86 submarines would be added to regional fleets by 2020, 30 of which would belong to China, which already had the most.

Some Chinese nuclear submarines were expected to carry 12 sea-launched ballistic missiles and could eventually be equipped with multiple warheads.

A south-east Asia analyst from the Australian Defence Force Academy at the University of NSW, Carl Thayer, said the ''deployment of nuclear submarines, including ballistic missile submarines, will introduce a new geostrategic dimension to the regional balance of power''.

Professor Thayer said Chinese nuclear submarine deployments would attract continuing attention from the US Navy. He warned the arms buying spree could have a destabilising impact on regional security.

In a paper delivered in Vietnam at the weekend, Professor Thayer says ''south-east Asia is ripe for rivalry - but not armed conflict - due to the strategic mistrust between a rising and increasingly militarily powerful China and a US committed to maintaining the present balance of power''.

Senior US officials said Mr Obama's trip to Cambodia, the first by a US president, would reinforce the ''pivot'' of US security forces to Asia and the Pacific. The strategy is seen as a counterweight to China, which is aggressively asserting its claim to almost all the South China Sea. Parts of the area are also claimed by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam.

In his paper, Professor Thayer says the ''most disturbing'' trend in defence spending is China's growing reliance on citizen fishing fleets and paramilitary forces gathering in a disputed area to assert Chinese jurisdiction.
