Yugoslavian Secret Space Program

Houston, do we have a hoax ?

Gregor Bulc
January 11, 2012

Interview with Žiga Virc, creator of “ Houston, We Have a Problem ! ” trailer for his alleged documentary on socialist Yugoslavia’s secret space program supposedly sold to the US in 1961

user posted image

Posted on YouTube and picked up by numerous social network users, bloggers and even large media outlets, the video has gone viral in a matter of hours, currently with more than a quarter of a million views (and counting). Fascinated by what I had thought was Virc’s ingenious fake trailer for a fake documentary, I contacted him with a list of pre-written questions, some of them being rather surreal in nature. His answers may surprise you, though.

Has anyone from CIA contacted you yet ?

CIA hasn’t contacted us yet.

Are you in possession of any secret documents or evidence that might jeopardize the United States or any other country? Have you considered collaborating with WikiLeaks ?

As our project is still developing, we’re constantly receiving new information from various sources which we still need to confirm. At this stage of research we’re open for any sources that can help the story/film only. However, we are filmmakers and by this we are only interested in making a film that audience might find intriguing. We are not involved with politics as authors.

Did the Yugoslav space program have anything to do with the deaths in the Kennedy family? Was Marshal Tito personally responsible for the assassination of JFK ?

This topic is not relevant for our film, therefore I do not have an answer to that.

Any chance Tito’s partisans were in possession of a space program during World War Two ? Weren’t they in reality the ones responsible for Hitler’s death, striking him with a laser beam from the moon ?

Again, this topic is not relevant for our film, therefore I do not have an answer to that.

Is this a trailer for a mystery documentary proper, a trailer for a wicked mockumentary, a promotional trailer for your yet undisclosed project, or a fake trailer to be understood in a similar vein as Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse trailers ?

We call this project docudrama and we made a trailer, which consists of information we could gather so far. Docudrama means the film will be based on true events and archives, but we might not get the archives or evidence for some parts and we’ll have to do some dramatisation (as this is usual in documentaries about real crime scenes, for instance).

Right now we can say 90% of facts are confirmed – for instance Slovene Herman Potočnik – Noordung, whose book “ The problem of space travel ” was a basis for establishing the rocket programme in Nazi Germany and later in NASA. We just got a confirmation that photo of Herman Potočnik is still hanging in NASA headquarters. His work was a great inspiration for the Soviet, German and post-1945 USA space program.

The Yugoslav role in space research is definitely the most intriguing for us and there’s a lot of work to be done. SFR Yugoslavia had a lot of technical resources for war industry. The biggest underground complex was Željava, built as a base for supersonic jets and other high-tech technologies. There are other very interesting facts – for instance, Tito received a stone from the Moon from USA as a souvenir, etc.

Judging from your previous film projects I’d say you are using this genre to get a certain point across ? Are you trying to criticize something in particular with regard to former Yugoslavia or is it a critical comment on present day issues ?

As always, the basic idea behind my every project is to tell an interesting story that the audience might find interesting. If someone wants to get a certain point across or criticize politics, film might not be the best tool for that. After receiving a lot of positive feedback and contacts for collaboration, I’d say no one finds the story critical in a sensationalistic way.

Your YouTube trailer has gone viral but its claims have been reiterated by various news organizations. Was that your initial intention ? What does that say about the state of news media today ?

Our initial intention was to present our project that is still in a very early research phase. I have a lot of experience with viral videos but I can honestly say that the best way to make a viral video is not to think about it or plan it as viral. In the past, people tried to make a viral video just for the sake of many views – but usually it didn’t work out. If you’re sincerely telling your story, the audience will feel that.

What kind of secret information sources have you been using ? Can you name some of historians and other experts that you collaborated with on this project ?

I’d like to emphasise once again that the film is at an early stage of preproduction. Nevertheless, we decided to go public with it and test the audience reaction. So we’re really happy regarding the current feedback as we’re putting a lot of effort in this film. At this point it’s not really a question of what’s true or what’s fiction – the only relevant differentiation is what is confirmed and what is not (yet) confirmed.

Therefore we’re still looking for people that were in any way connected to our topic – Yugoslavian secret space programme, especially in the 1961 when main events were supposed to happen. As we’re in research phase I cannot confirm any of the people involved, since that could have negative influence on our work. We’re getting in touch with some people that are interested in helping us but at the same time do not want their names to be made public. Our production is very strict regarding this, but it’s all for a good cause.

What is your message to the people who believe your video is a trailer for a real documentary ?

Right now approx. 90% of facts in our trailer are confirmed and widely available to check, which is probably a very high percentage of actual facts compared to today’s images shown on TV-news. Therefore, I’m sure audience will find it honest and believable.

Shot down 5 aircrafts in less than a minute !

Muhammad Mahmood Alam Pakistan Air Force Pilot Who Destroyed 5 Indian Jets in One Minute during 1965 War.

Air Commodore Muhammad Mahmood Alam is a retired Pakistani fighter pilot, North American F-86 Sabre Flying ace and one-star general who served with the Pakistan Air Force. He was awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat ("The star of courage"), a Pakistani military decoration, for his actions during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. In earning his decorations, Alam downed five Indian aircraft in less than a minute — the first four within 30 seconds — establishing a world record.
Alam is well-known for his actions during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 when he was posted at Sargodha. During this war he was involved in various dogfights while flying his F-86 Sabre fighter. Pakistani sources claim that he downed nine Indian fighters in air-to-air combat, including six Hawker Hunter fighters. In one mission on 7 September 1965, Alam downed five Indian aircraft in less than a minute, the first four within 30 seconds, establishing a world record.Alam's confirmed kills are as follows:

6 September 1965, 1× Hawker Hunter
Squadron Leader Ajit Kumar Rawlley, No. 7 Sqn, KIA near Tarn Taran.

7 September 1965, 3× Hawker Hunters
Squadron Leader Onkar Nath Kacker, No. 27 Sqn, POW
Squadron Leader Suresh B Bhagwat
Flying Officer Jagdev Singh Brar, No. 7 Sqn, KIA, near Sangla Hill.

September 16, 1965, 1× Hawker Hunter
Flying Officer Farokh Dara Bunsha, No. 7 Sqn, KIA, near Amritsar.

The Pakistan Air Force figures have been disputed by Indian sources which claim Alam made four kills, attributing one of the losses of Sqn Ldr Onkar Nath Kacker's aircraft to booster failure. They also claim that gun camera footage of Alam's kills is yet to be made public and therefore some of the kills cannot be confirmed.

In 1967, Alam was transferred as the Squadron Leader of the first squadron of Dassault Mirage III fighters procured by the PAF. However, his unpopularity with the top management of the PAF lead to removal of his command based on a false pretext.

Iran plans to design, manufacture new military aircraft

Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi says the Islamic Republic has set up several projects intended to design and build new advanced stealth and fighter planes.

Speaking at the 11th Iranian Aerospace Society Conference in the capital Tehran on Monday, General Vahidi said that Iran enjoys considerable expertise to manufacture various military, fighter and passenger aircraft.

He noted that Iran has made great strides in the aviation industry through the design and mass production of its first home-made Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) fighter jet, which has joined Iran's air force fleet.

Brigadier General Vahidi highlighted that while a large number of world countries assemble airplanes under the license of a certain country, Islamic Republic of Iran produces domestically developed aircraft.

The Iranian defense minister had earlier said that the design and production of advanced home-made fighter jets reveal the competence of Iran's defense industries and prove the futility of the US-led UN sanctions and additional unilateral sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic by the US and its European allies.

Brigadier General Mohammadreza Karshki said in February 2011 that the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force has begun an extensive project to design and build the country's most advanced fighter jet.

He added that the Iranian Air Force is cooperating with the nation's Defense Ministry in the project.

The Iranian fighter jet is similar to the US-built F/A-18, although its appearance looks similar to F-5E/F Tiger II. The new single-seat bomber has the ability to track down enemy aircraft, engage in combat, target locations on the ground, and carry a load of assorted weapons and ammunition.

Iran unveiled its first squadron of Saeqeh fighter-bombers in an air show in September 2010.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.

Iran has repeatedly assured other nations, especially regional neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.

JF-17 Jet Fighter Block 2 With Dual Seat Version From Pakistan Air Force

Avic, Pakistan Working On JF-17 Two-Seater

By Bradley Perrett perrett@aviationweek.com

The Chengdu works of Avic’s combat aircraft subsidiary is developing a two-seat version of the JF-17 Thunder fighter in cooperation with the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, say Chinese industry executives.

The two-seater will be adaptable for conversion training and combat roles, they say, though as a fighter it will not perform as well as the single-seat version. The JF-17 is being built in a joint program with Pakistan for the Pakistan Air Force. The program, which began, unusually, without a conversion trainer, will deliver about 100 JF-17s to Pakistan, the executives say.

Development of the two-seater has not advanced to a point at which Avic International, the export division of Avic, could sign a contract for delivery, the executives say, adding that they were unsure when the aircraft would be available. The single-seat version was designed with development of a two-seater in mind, they say.

Attempts at exporting the JF-17 would be greatly helped by an order, and therefore endorsement, from the Chinese air force, but the service is still evaluating the JF-17. It began doing so three or four years ago, the executives say, adding that the air force was not even telling them exactly what it wanted.

The JF-17, also called FC-1 Xiaolong, is a relatively small fighter with a normal takeoff weight of 9.1 tons (20,100 lb.) and a single Russian engine, the 19,200 lb.-thrust Klimov RD-93, a derivative of the MiG-29’s RD-33. A key selling point of the JF-17 is that it is much cheaper than Western aircraft such as the Saab Gripen, says Avic International.

Chengdu is part of Avic Aviation Techniques (AAT), an Avic subsidiary which encompasses the group’s combat aircraft, trainer, drones and missile plants and which was formerly called Avic Defense.

Another of its key export products, the L-15 trainer and light attack aircraft, would also be helped greatly by an order from the Chinese air force. The group is still looking for a first customer for the type, built by its Hongdu plant at Nanchang.

In its current form, the L-15 is subsonic but a supersonic version has been designed, say Chinese executives. They expect that it will be sold abroad mainly as a light attack aircraft.

Domestically it is competing for a volume production order against the JL-9 (or FTC-200), a very distant descendant of the MiG-21 capable of Mach 2 and built by another part of AAT, Guizhou Aviation.

AAT President Wang Yawei has identified after-sales support as a weakness for his company that must be fixed. The same message is often heard from other Avic subsidiaries.
