Well as we can see today ipad2 / various tablets can play games such as batman aa,la noire, dirt 2 etc etc through Onlive service. At the same time, the game being offered by them are much more cheaper compare to PSP/DS/3DS/PSV.Do you ever think that tablet gaming will if ever replaces Console/handheld (PSV,3DS etc etc) in the future ?

Not to mention phone/tablets get tremendous upgrades every year/month,so what is your opinion ? This is a question i have been thinking as a gamer.

Right... I still prefer a minimum 20 inches to a 52 inches wide TV when playing with a controller.. Or a console that does not need me to have an extra game pad when I was on the go.. Moreover, the phone screen is so tiny where I cant even bring up close to my face, then how am I suppose to see the details?

And dun get me started with virtual gamepad.. I effing hate them! Because the sensibility can get dull when I was in a very ganjeong moment.. I always felt so cheated playing all those touch screen games.. Well, if they do have this physical add ons... I still wun have them. They are not as solid..

Anyway, Playing AAA games using ipad is just stupid to me.. seriously.. Unless apple came out with a screen+console combi system just like the imac.. If so... That will definitely throw M$ and Sony off the hill....Cuz I am going to support them, least, Sony comes out with Bravia+PS system as well.. And I'd imagine Samsung will collaborate with M$ if it comes to that.. In which case, Given that they are affordable of course.. laugh.gif

Hard to replace. See how consoles never replaced PCs when they were here. Consoles has their own pros. One of which is no need to worry of hardware requirement.

Ipads/Androids has OS requirement, processor requirement. Try playing angry birds on a low-end sub rm400 smartphone. Lag till death. They may seem to replace but as a full blown dedicated gaming system, I doubt so.

Just my 2 cents.

each will have their own share of the pie...wii U and the vita is aiming to integrate the use of AR + tablet + traditional gaming..I like the idea..but we'll see how it turns out in practice next year.

If executed properly...it can be a great year for us gamers.

Tablets and gaming will no doubt have a market and will continue to grow but full fledged console with huge screenies is defiantly here to stay for now.

Tablet need more buttons. Very uncomfortable using the touch screen control. Anyways, really hope onlive can reach here. The concept is good and with good internet connection it will be perfect. Imagine gaming with high end PC graphic anywhere anytime. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

it really suck to play FPS or rpg on the touchscreen man...its just a little too hard 2 control....casual games like angry birds, chinese chess or puzzles that 1 is fine....

and I think it would be a cold day in hell when those puny little touchscreens replaces proper consoles with big ass tvs and monitors

Tablets/touch gaming is just a different market totally so I dont see any worries of it replacing consoles (home or portable). Ask ourselves, if u played console games long enough, nothing beats physical buttons/keys/sticks right?

My opinion la wink.gif

Actually talked to some retailers about this issue, worrying about the future of gaming. But not to worry la, "console @ core" gamers hv been around for ages, containing a mix of casual and the more dedicated gamers. "tablet" gaming are on the rise but (much) more on the casual type of games. It's a new "instantly sellable" genre but the core gamers will diverse but not switch (for good at least). Nothing beats playing on the pc or tv, and most DS/psp/GB gamers look less funnier without using the gyroscope on most tablets in public, hehe

you just need a tv/monitor that have internet to play it. that ipad there just functioning as one.
means it doesn't process the game. you need a hell fast internet for that. i doubt it will ever come here.

It's very unlikely. The screen size of the tablet is not an issue as PSP and NDS had a much smaller screen size than tablet.

Games on the tablet are not as feature rich packed as the games on handheld system. Having that being said, handheld games typically last longer and the titles are more widely known.

Hardware wise, touch gaming might turned down hardcore gamers as I believe they feels more contended if there is a feedback when pressing a button, which is not available on touch pad.

In short, I believe tablet should serve its purpose as it should, which is a reading or entertainment device rather than a full fledge gaming device. Casual games is more like it.

I don't see consoles & handhelds replace by tablet. I see it as next step in gaming evolution. Consoles & handhelds will be here to stay. But not sure how many varieties are still alive in the near future.

I'd say smartphones or portable devices like iPod Touch and iPads will replace dedicated handhelds for gaming, but not consoles.

It's just that time changes, and previously people switched from doing hardcore gaming on PC to consoles. It's just that it's more convenient, and they can always opt for computing on a far cheaper laptops (compared to gaming PC). The rise of netbooks and tablets (alongside consoles) tells us that.

And transition from handheld console to smartphones has already started. Even the #1 nintendo guy admitted that iPhone and iPod Touch is a threat to them.

It's just that the technology inside a handheld console isn't much different from a portable device. For tv consoles, they can have years of headstart on stuff like technologies and performance. But for handheld consoles, they are always fitted with the same technology (if not inferior) with the ones powering other portable devices.

Price is a major factor too. The math of handheld console equals to tv console's price just doesn't work anymore. For TV consoles, the price is so low (subsidised) that it's just a fraction of a high-end gaming PC's pricetag. For handheld console, the price is much the same of a gaming-capable portable device.

TV consoles gonna have their spot in living room for a very long time (being a media centre is crucial for their survival). But handhelds will go.

Hey, the casual market for the Androids and iPeople's HUEG. Still, I don't see it replacing the console market, let alone handhelds for that matter. Games there are just too simple.

Although, there is Gaikai

You give me a tablet that have:
1..games I want to play
2.an interface that match or more effective than buttons and analog sticks.nope touch screen is not effective.not on all games at least.

Than I will convert to tablet.having say that, tablets may one day be there on these 2 requirements.but not yet

Ah, but we do have hell fast internet.

At least, in the Klang Valley (20Mbps UniFi, 30Mbps Maxis, 50Mbps Time).

Though, quota will make it useless...

Besides, game will only run at 1024x768 on iPad due to low-res screen.

can they create a game like uncharted to be played on tablet? No, they cant. But they can do it psvita. That's the difference. Tablets and smartphone always cater for casual gamers, altho casual gamers does pretty much dominates the market share, but still core gamers owes prefer consoles and handhelds anytime, anyday. Android and iOS games are just meh... good to kill time, but there is no depth at all.

Tablets will NEVER replace consoles. period.
BUT... it might be part of the console in the future, like Nintendo's direction with the Wii U, part console, part tablet, with buttons
and replacing the handhelds

For hardcore gaming, I'll still go for my console, with HD graphics and surround sounds on big screen TV, which is the experience the tablets can never replace. and I hardly touch my handhelds nowadays, even the new gen of handhelds like 3DS/PSV doesn't interested me at all.
As now I'm carrying a tablet most of the time, while doing my work on d go, it also act as my casual gaming device for few minutes of fun, unlike handhelds, there's hardly a "few minutes of fun" casual games, and i'll have to carry extra weight on top of my tablet for gaming? tablet wins
oh yeah... to fix my button smashing crave? console is the answer wink.gif

if bandwith/jitter/lag is not a factor (yes, it always has been, and will be in many years to come), then gaming will just be on the cloud. then your consoles/handheld/tablets will all be "thin", meaning CHEAP. the future of everything digital, not only gaming, is on the cloud. is just the bandwith/jitter/lag issue we must eliminate for that too happen

Base on ur title, I dun think it will. Playing game is all about fun. The graphics on the tablets is still not as good as the pc or consoles. For example, the game - Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (2012) is on PC, Xbox, PS3, Playbook, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and Android tablets. I think the game in the handheld devices is rubbish. I play it with my pc, the effects, sound system and the graphics is so much better. The story line/matches in the pc version is longer than the ones in handheld devices. So, back to what I said earlier, playing games is all about fun with sound effects, real graphics and the feeling of holding the controllers or gamepad or joypad.

we come to the era which is similar trend during the last time when Console start to replacing Arcade.
TV might replace Movie Theater...

these are all game changer. But console will not dead so easily. Just take a look on Movie Theater, when people though the theater might dead when TV was invented. but is still alive today... tongue.gif

I found a interesting research from here, if you can spare sometime watching it.. is very informative..

Fifa/PES - PS3/Xbox360
RPG - PC
simple games like angry birds - Ios/Android

in a way i have all of these but no time to play...
last time i dont own much but got time...
its such a trade off...

After some thinking,i don't think tablet/smartphone will replace console/portables.

For Example,

Tablet/smartphone has camera,so why Nikon/Canon are still releasing high end camera ?

Tablet/smartphone can read book online,so why there are still the existence of book ?

Tablet/smartphone has built in time in them,so why ppl still wear watch ? or buy expensive brand like Rolex,Omega etc ?

So i will stand by my opinion, and that is they will never place.BUT they will coexist.

Maybe year 2020,onlive need 10mbps above.U can count how much for internet service in Malaysia for 10mbps a month plus subscribe onlive game itself.I think, own console like ps3 costing more cheaper than onlive.Anyway, sony playstation got psn and their game maker itself like GT5,Uncharted,and many more.Maybe sony computer entertainment don't sign contract with onlive for pblish their game there. cool2.gif
