Diet does play a role, but doesn't mean that's the only reason. Genetics is tricky to figure out especially when there is no record on the parents/grandparents n so on.

Miko was never grey but she never got much yellower than when she first came at 7 months. Billie is a black beauty, though the fur on her face did turn slightly yellowish, the majority still remains grey. Dakota stayed grey for more than a year, but now I'm not sure if she turned yellow or not as I have not received any updates.

I've seen gliders kept in not very clean conditions housed with coconut shells for years yet some still remain a beautiful grey.

As for what I think, love your glider, feed it, care for it well and it will look beautiful no matter what the colour is.

Oh and yes, female gliders can mark. Believe me they can really mark! Not all female gliders but Billie is a marking-whore. She will mark from my shoulder all the way to my palm and other places as well if she gets the chance. It is pungent, strong and kind of a translucent brownish grey fluid. It's pretty grosss........

Washing sleeping pouches too often can cause excessive marking as well.

I usually wash every week to 2 weeks depending on the glider. Billie keeps her pouch super clean so every 2 weeks.

Well, the marking musk is not pee, so it may or may not help. I feel you, like their trying to say 'u are mine, haha.'

I had 1 female too, which became a bit yellowish until I put a stop to it.

Gliders are messy eaters, the yellow is from the HPW & apples. Their skin get rubbed against the HPW plate/bowl which stains their skin. Although they clean/groom themselves well but it can't be 100% perfect.

Same goes to the apples, when my glider carry the apple around, it rubbed against her skin especially the belly. After some time, those stain will grow yellowish.

Urine too, she peed and then jump/run/dropped all over her own pee. Thus staining her skin again. After some time running around she gets tired, fell asleep & the stain dries on her skin. Making it harder to clean when she finally wakes up & start cleaning herself.

Btw, add more papayas to the fruit diet. It'll save the gliders from HLP. And reduce the mealworms & catfood, it'll prevent the glider from getting obese.

That's staining from food, not all yellow gliders get yellow from food staining. I hv seen gliders tht arent on HPW n almost never fed apples gradually turn yellow as time passes, but it's a very nice natural yellow, not dirty or sickly yellow. As for food stains, I hv joeys get dirty brown yellow which resulted in fur loss. She was so dirty tht almost all her fur dropped off so she looked naked.

Yup, urine can stain. But thts if there's nothing to absorb it other than the fur I guess. Miko used to pee in her pouch but she didnt get yellow. She did smell bad though.

wonder if a obese glider can fly xD !

Anyways , thanks for this! I remember hpw can be the culprit of the yellowish stains. my bad Dx

Yes they can, but they need more effort. And its amusing to see them try.

i talk a lot with her.she sometimes let me cuddle her, but sometimes she nipping on  me..aiyoo
one day.i let her sleep on me (so that she recognize my scent~ [but she in the pouch, with the zipper open] when i woke up, she already exploring my room..feel like jantung nak explode tengok she on her own, on the floor!  sweat.gif thank god she don't hesitate to get back in pouch..
[but not to climb on me.. sad.gif ]

in the morning  6 to 11am/12pm/1 pm - she's not totally asleep.[maybe because i'm moving and shifting a lot~]  so i feed her like fruits/pallet..and some water - after she satisfied then only tido~..if not, she keep on trying to get out of the pouch and stare me with those big round eye, is this normal ?

U probably know this but always be careful when sleeping with ur glider. A friend of mine did tht and killed his glider by rolling on her by accident. As for the love n commitment, keep it up!

I find when it comes to sleeping with pocket pets, it's hard to beat rats. I fell asleep accidentally a few times while playing with them on the sofa, and when I woke up they snuggled under my pillow or between me and the couch back rest. They've never tried to run away even once. I was like wow...

Plus, rats aren't easy to squish like gliders.

Wow... This thread has gotten slower. Good that they're finally doing something about licensing.

I dont think there should be a fee for each glider. Maybe with a rule of not more than a certain number of breeding pairs, rules concerning more on the living conditions, diet and care rather than just a fee per glider.

Fee per glider is too much hassle and it's kinda pointless cuz even if someone were to inspect a commercial breeder's breeding facility they wont be able to tell if its the same glider they registered or not unless it's obvious like mosaic, leus etc. If rules are enforced on the diet, living conditions, care and such, it becomes too costly for mass breeders to mass breed like before.

A yearly license with rules like that would be better, unless someone else has a better suggestion. I'm kinda outdated with happenings in KL now, so forgive me(but please do tell) if my info is off.

It's more toward hissing. Sometimes when gliders have trouble passing motion like constipation they make that noise as well. And yes, when they're squabbling or not liking something. If the nail gets stuck in the pouch or it's uncomfortable it may make that noise too.

i notice that my sugarglider have watery nose and his hand and leg are kinda cold..what should i do?bring it to vet?Or what fruits should i give him to eat?
any recommended vet in Klang?

Better to call any vet you know and ask them if they will treat sugar gliders. Not all vets will accept or knows how to treat gliders, so better you check first. If they don't, then ask if they know any vets willing to treat exotics.

How is your glider now?

75% pellets & 25% fruits/veggies? When did this become the new diet plan?

QUOTE(xGalGirlx @ Sep 6 2015, 01:57 PM)
Hello!

Just wondering..

1. Is it okay for me to just have one F sugar glider? Apart from it being lonely and stuffs, will it .. die of loneliness or something? Like hamsters, they need to be at least in a pair or they'll die easily ( that's what happened to my previous hamsters )

2. Since sugar gliders eat sweet stuff, will their hands get sticky after eating? I mean as in, I'll let them roam around the room after eating and just afraid that my floor would get sticky as well after that and attract ants.

3. As long as with fruits + vege + HPW are fine right? I've read some posts and I realized some are feeding them mealworms as treats. ( I'm scared of worms, sorry =x )

4. How smelly is the poo/pee? Is it as smelly as cat's ?

First timer here and I'm deciding between hamster or this. One downside about hamster is the lifespan and looking forward to know more about sugar gliders! ( Still reading the posts )

Thanks. smile.gif

Since most of the members has gone to FB groups..sugarglidermalaysia...  i do suggest u follow them to.. nevertheless i will try to answer your question
*
1. It can get depressed and self mutilate which can lead to death. Not usually recommended to keep a lone glider, but not impossible if you are prepared to give it a lot of attention everyday. Not all hamsters need to be in pairs. Some are solitary like syrian hamsters, who will fight if kept in pairs or groups.

2. Usually they will clean themselves after eating. Unless you scare them while they're eating, then you'll get little sweet footprints.

3. You don't need to feed mealworms if you find it difficult to handle. It can be replaced by many things like steamed/boiled chicken breast pieces, hard boiled egg, boiled/steamed turkey(if you can find any), even just a bit of wholewheat bread can be used as a treat. Be thoughtful on what kinds of fruit & veggies and rotate between different combos. HPW should not make up more than 50% of the meal.

4. Generally bearable if kept clean, however it can be very pungent especially if fed a lot of protein. Some people are told by pet shops to not feed protein rich foods to 'reduce odour', which usually leads to malnutrition as they need protein. Just feed them properly and don't worry so much about the smell. As long as you keep the cage clean regularly it should not be too bad. Male gliders tend to be stronger smelling to show off their macho-ness.

Hamsters and sugar gliders are very different animals. They're not the same species. Its stated in many sources that sugar gliders are capable of living up to 15 years, but they also have a high and early death rate as pets due to improper care. Most pet sugar gliders don't live past 4 years of age due to owner negligence, whereas hamsters are way easier to care for despite their very short lifespan. If you are up for the commitment, then a sugar glider is no better pocket pet. If not then hamsters are your best bet.

My virgin Billie is currently 9 years old and healthy(fat!) with some greying fur. Maggie was around 12 years old when she died last year.
