Guys,
The paint, plaster, acrylic all cannot last wan. I have a pond. To seal a pond with heavy load of water, high pressure we use waterproof cement and cement it like paint with paint brush over 2 layers/coats. The product I use is called Sika top. It comes with 2 parts. One part cement like thing, the other part is white milky liquid. The instruction is on the contents and it is easy, much easier than plastering, just like painting. mix the 2 part a bit at a time as it will dry up very fast and this thing is very sticky. Meaning when you paint on the wall or floor the cement or the mix leave the brush and stick on the concrete. Never get lot of it on your hand, it stick on your hand too. My pond is 3 feet deep and yet no leak after the application. You have to mix the 2 parts not to be like paste but driping, half paste half liquid. Never add water. The surface to be applied has to be wet but no standing water. There are video you can google. just google sika top or go to sika indonesia website. This sika can be found in most hardware shops. The bag is 25kg and 10kg or 5kg of liquid (cant remenber) is enough. Dont think you have not enough liquid. if you go according to the instruction you will end up with 10% of the liquid extra. One set cost not more than RM100. Believe me this is the viable solution. it is used for reserviour and potable water you can drink. When it is good for pond and reservoir it has to be more than ok for slap concrete roof to keep away rain water. Google with image/video you will see the product. Call them the malaysia distributor their technical guy can advise you. They also have another product a silicone like product that can seal leak for swimming pool. They are the waterproof guy. The sika top when you make a ball and when it dry it is like a rock. unlike rock, water just cant get in. If you have treasure to be bury, put your treasure in a box and cover layers with sika top and tanam, after many years it will still as good becasue it is waterproof. QUOTE(Jo_da48 @ Jan 15 2012, 01:14 AM) Sika top is stronger than normal portland concrete cement sand mixed. To have it rot, the concrete cement will rot first. So no worry. How do I know? I make one ball sika top and one ball concrete cement. After one month hammer it you will see which one cracks. It is very easy to apply when you are applying it on flat floor than vertical walls like pond. It is a day job. half day washing and cleaning the floor. 2nd half day apply two to three layers/coats of sika top, then cover it with plastic sheet the whole area for it to slow cure. Go and buy the plastic covering sheet available from hardware shop, the transparent one, the one people use to wraps travelling bags at airport, furniture and food in supermarket. One roll RM12 only if you do not want to spend on more expensive shade plastic sheet. On top of the covering cover it again with newspaper and weight down with stones anything heavy, keeping the sun away. The logic is the slower the cement/sika cures the stronger it is. so the covering is keeping sun and heat away and keep the moisture inside slowing down curing/drying process. Also to keep rain water away. Rain can seep into the uncured sika top and make it weaker especially the first 3 days and the 1st 24hrs is crucial. Leave it for 7 days if not a month. Total cost RM100 + labour. Go and grab one indonesian or bangladeshi and pay him RM100 for the job and he will finish it in half day. If you intend to DIY, do not straight do it. Test a bit on something first, anywhere like your back yard drain/ground so that you gain the experience and not making mistake on actual work. There are similar waterproof product equally good like sika. Dont look further there is no better easy solution and the amount of weight added on the roof is minimal. You do not want to add a 3 inch layer of concrete cement on your roof, do you? and pay a reinforce concrete job price. Any weight putting on roof weaken the foundation and if it is not meant to be. |

WHY use Sika or Sika Cement(($75/bag) ? Can use White cement ($25/bag) ? It is used as grout filler for bathroom, so can stand water splash...
I used it for the concrete slab roof and wall last week, no leak, this week when it is raining. Anyone in construction can comment? |

Sika cement or any water proof cement have additional ingredient/mix to bond the cement stronger and making it water proof. They don't sell at premier price if the product don't perform better.I used it for the concrete slab roof and wall last week, no leak, this week when it is raining. Sika product is not manufactured for show only.I used it for the concrete slab roof and wall last week, no leak, this week when it is raining. Anyone in construction can comment? Added on December 14, 2012, 4:44 pmif you guys want a good product use Sika-TOP 107. This is a 2-part product - cement mixture and latex (susu). mix the true properly and brush one layer in one direction and leave it to dry overnight. next day apply another layer (this time perpendicular to the direction you applied yesterday). after that you can apply one layer of cement screed to protect this waterproof membrane. if you cannot get sika-top, look for sika brushcoat. apply using same method. sika brushcoat is cheaper at RM60 per bag with susu. this is what contractors use to waterproof concrete roof slabs and toilets. only that they will sometime apply only one layer to save cost. if you use cement only, it will still leak ... just a matter of time. white cement is the worst .. it is porous. Another thing ... if the crack is not stable, then you have a big problem. could be a problem with your house extension foundation or something similar. no matter what you do, if the crack is getting bigger, you will still get a leak after sometime. Good luck! This post has been edited by lionfish77: Dec 14 2012, 04:44 PM |

Sika waterproofing is one of the best products you can buy. Some of the hydropower plan have specified the Sika waterproofing product for drainage, slope etc … these are very harsh environment and failed is not an option.

Sika cement more expensive because it was different with normal cement. Sikatop 107 is for internal and sikatop 109 is for external or internal. Now you using that normal cement just temporary. Once your cement crack. Then will become leaking problem. But if u choosing sikatop or sika material of waterproofing. Their product got rubber type. So can survive in raining or hot weather. That's the different price bout normal and sika cement!I used it for the concrete slab roof and wall last week, no leak, this week when it is raining. Anyone in construction can comment? |

It is more flexible and probably more expensive too. |

I use Davao's white cement - it is Portland cement + limestone + polymer - I used it to cover some line cracks in the concrete roof that was leaking. Seems to have stopped it. Also in between the concrete slab roof (renovation) and the original house. It has hardened and seems to prevent the leaks. Yesterday, it rained heavily but there was no leaks. I think the polymer inside may have prevented the absorption of water (since it is used as a grout in bathrooms)?
Only worry is if it will crack under the hot sun..well, I am trying this out. My concrete roof is easy to access as my balcony connects to it. I was overseas, Reason is that my wife spend $2000 to this Mr Ng (aka Mr Foo) a contractor to fix a 50 cm line crack that was leaking, he said he used Sika cement and after 3 mpnths, it was still leaking and he wanted more money. nearly causes a third world war between me and my wife....Damn..so I am trying to do it myself. The place he sealed also have a small line crack, which shows that maybe he did not use the sealant properly. It took me only 30 mins for me to fix that leak with white cement.. I am also thinking of brushing a coat of bitumen (cheap @ $30/can)over the white cement. However, I will use Sika 109 if all these experiment fails. Thank you all the sifus out there. |
