Hi,

Anyone know the budget of self publishing comics in Malaysia?

The cost may include the printing, advertising, and securing an ISBN number.

The comics is full colour, 70 pages, soft cover, approx standard size 10" x 7".

Can it be done in RM15K? How many copies can be printed?

Thank you for your help in advance.

last time i heard print novel about rm 20k for 1000 copies... not sure about that anyway, because is what i heard from my housemate

however after print if you plan put at popular or mph, they might charge to 40-50% of the book price as thier profit, so you see the book price rm50 not because the book is expensive, but is because the sharks takes the big cuts.

my housemate fren dint go for mph/popular route, they open a press con to launch thier book and ask those cooperation big guy come, in the name of charity (the book about disability of children), those big guns almost wipe all the book at the press con, so they regain capital and can choose either print again or else

I don't think TS is asking about printing, but more on publishing the book and how to distribute it.

My answer to TS question on RM15K is sufficent is Yes and No. If TS intended to publish a comic book entirely without advertising revenue (e.g, Dragonball, Doraemon), the answer probably is no. The cost doesn't stop at print itself, but promotion will wipe out nearly 1/3 of your budget, not to mention profit sharing on cover price. You will get back a fraction of your cost. If you are publishing the above genre, I suggest that you paired with reputable publisher of such genre (e.g, ArtSquare, another one in PJ, around P1 building) or if you are into comic with editorial, revenue from advertising space, the answer is a big NO.

the concern to go with local publisher is they will own the copyrights and/or other rights. profit is not the top priority.

I so happen to sold a machine this publishing company at Seri Kembangan & I recall your thread. So I check with the business manager on the details but he insist to have a look at the comic first before willing to disclose any figure. The reason is he want to know whether that comic is sell-able or not. Right now they are mainly into children book publishing.

Here is their contact:
iVOX Sdn. Bhd.
Lot 11A, Jalan 6/7, Kawasan Perindustrian Seri Kembangan,
43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
Tel: 03-8948 0760

His name is Steven.

1. If this is a one-off thing, then you get an ISBN. IINM, the allocating authority in Malaysia is the Malaysian National Library (Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia). It's free! smile.gif Details here. http://www.pnm.gov.my/index.php?id=235

2. If it's a periodical (published every month/week/etc), then you'll want an ISSN. Details here. http://www.pnm.gov.my/index.php?id=237

3. Where to keep the books. Don't worry.

If your book is 5mm thick, 1000 of them would measure 5m when stacked up. If you limit your stack to 1.5m (so that it does not topple over), your 1000 copy print run will fit on 3.5 stacks. Not a lot of space. Even if you've got a really thick comic, and each is 10mm thick, 1000 copies would still fit in 7 stacks.
