QUOTE
The aim of Desura is to provide gamers with a dependable interface which delivers the content they want to play in the quickest cross-pc way possible. At its heart is a digital distribution application which can serve (and patch) games, mods and addons to its members.

Released in 2009 by an Australian games company (which also runs the IndieDB and ModDB), Desura was in stealth development for 2 years. Thanks go out to all the game developers, indies and modders for distracting us. Without you Desura would have been released years ago. We hope you enjoy using Desura to change the way you and others play games as much as we enjoy running it. Without the community and developers, Desura is nothing more than a made up word. With the community, it's the best way to play something different.

What makes us different?
Developer driven
We don't make games ourselves, so we are entirely focused on helping game developers and publishers show off their wares. All tools and functionality provided by Desura to game developers, are provided to empower them to create a better game, and share its features in all their glory with the Desura community. Developers control the flow of news, images, videos and content through their profiles - we don't put up walls and barriers.

Community run
Every member of the Desura community can post comments, submit reviews and upload screenshots. We are not some mysterious editor in an ivory tower controlling content - it's anybody who can put pen to paper. Our screenshots aren't limited to some airbrushed press releases - they're taken by the gamers. Perhaps most importantly, opinions on gaming aren't just our own - they are the combined feelings and views of anybody who has taken a moment to make themselves heard.

User made content
There are plenty of great free mods and user made addons out there for games, which few know about and even fewer can install. Being able to customize your games is at the heart of everything Desura does, and we aim to make user made content as accessible as possible. From simple maps through to entire conversions and even whole new games, we hope to put what you want to play at your fingertips.

But bare in mind, some of the free games could be troublesome to configure. Because it's very raw. I guess Cave Story+ offer better compatibility support + HD graphics.

I hope there are more indie titles will come to Desura. For example, Bastion.

Tried it.

GUI is difficult to use and most of the time I have no idea what is going on.

Tried it, but uninstalled them right away because it's just too difficult to move in between 2 platform. Might as well stick to one, not to mention Origin and GFWL. doh.gif

Those 3 serve different purpose (Origin, GFWL, Steam). Desura main focus is on obscure and indie games which probably doesn't appear on other DD, not much on AAA titles. If you love raw indie, give 'em some chance.

Steam does.

Anyway, I will try to learn to use it when I have the time.

Cant really be bothered. Steam alone is more than enough for me.

There are too many games on the market now to the point that there arent enough time to play most of them. I might as well just stick to one platform.

Desura already exist for quite sometime, it's quite surprising actually that no such thread or discussion exist in Gamer's Hideout. I'm using my bro account which is dated back from 2009. About Desura, their main focus are obscure - small indie games, sometime in pre-alpha state similar to Minecraft, unlike Steam which is most of the time they bring already great, stable and well known indie titles to their catalogue. These is the difference between them. Some stuff on Steam not available on Desura, some stuff on Desura can be quite unlikely to appear on Steam.

Certain games on Desura developed by small group of people, or even single person; you can check the developer background. People must take into consideration that they're not a big company, so they might have limited number of publisher at the moment. Hence, the small catalogue. They're also not try to compete and targeting Steam or other popular digital distributor fanbase, of course they would lose in popularity contest. Which is also my main intention for creating this thread; to share with fellow indies' fan that there are an alternative digital distributor that might offer content which probably interest them.

Based on these factors, the service that they offered maybe not popular (not much people like to pay for alpha / beta & old game), but it has it's own niche. Hopefully Desura can grow bigger just like GOG and persuade several other indie or small publisher to join them. On a different note, if you preorder Xenonauts on Desura, you still can get the copy of final game on Steam.

I will pre-order Xenonauts.

However, I will wait for Steam's pricing before I decide.
