I am a primary school teacher, just transfer back to my hometown.

I plan to teach tuition next year. Will only be teaching selected subjects.

Target clients : Age 5- 12 pupils.
Competition : Very Keen. There are many tuition centres & Kindergarden (with tuition) all around.
Location : House. Or Home Tuition. (Penang)
Price : ??? What should I charge ? Premium price ? Discounted Price ? Normal ?
Should include Material cost ?
Market : Small class.
Customer relationship :Is the parent or student more important ?
Personal Outlook : Really that important ? I mean look professional ?

I am a male teacher, will it be a disadvantage ?

How to promote the business? To gain students ?

I am considering buy a house for tuition. (also as investment / self stay.) Teaching in my parents house is prohibited. They don't want too noisy.....

tuition is a very localized business. suggestion is promote your service in your neighbourhood. try ask yourself what could be the most effective method to spread news in your neighbourhood?

secondly, tuition business is a very 'personal' business. it's not like buying a watch or shirt where the buyer do not need to know the seller. this 'personal' business requires you to have personal interaction with the students and the parents so that they will trust you and buy your service. you might have to consider taking to your prospect personally to promote your service.

third, you dont have to promote your tuition service to your students. instead of targeting student, i would recommend you to target the parents. they are the person who make the final call whether to send the kids to you for tuition and they are the ones who eventually going to pay you.

male teacher will not be a disadvantage if you could present a professional outlook to your prospects.

price. if you do not have very creative & innovative business mindset, charging a premium will kill your chances. some business genuine can charge a premium yet people flock to them, but thats another story. charging too low you might regret later and you would even wondering why are you working so hard for so little money. i suggest you charge an amount that you are comfortable that is worth your time. but most importantly, check out how is the market price and try think like a parent , put yourself in their shoes to decide a price.

buying a house for now might not be ideal. business and property investment are 2 separate things. you might think you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, but unless you are very skillful in both business and property investment, else the chances of messing it is usually higher than making it.

How to promote tuition business ?

1. Teach the students well, then they will promote it for you. Eg, take few OK result students, teach them well and make them all get A s, then their parent will happy coz nowadays parent like to see A s, students happy, they promote for you then you also happy. Ps: take Ok Ok students the effect is the best! Take lousy students if you are really good!

Price?
2. Go ask around the town how much they charge. Per subject or whatsoever. But one thing, set your price in between. Don't charge too cheap and wanna become or act like a good man, they will only think that cheap fees must be cheap teacher (parent mind). U can charge high, provided that u can make most of your students get A s.

Should include Material cost ?
3. yes, you should. include it in your fees.

Is the parent or student more important ?
4. Student obviously. But parent only like one thing, A s. Haha.

Really that important ? I mean look professional ?
5. Yes, but you only need to look smart and clean. No need to act like a pro, expert or any shit. Don't make yourself look blur, and be confident. I don't think look is important, but the way you communicate. Talk like you are knowledgeable, if you really is, then just talk like normal.

I am a male teacher, will it be a disadvantage ?
6. No, actually its better. Students like male teacher than female, coz more confident, IMO. But one thing you shouldn't practice, don't be so calculative AKA stingy, students don't like it. Sometime treat them something, anything. They will happy, then parent happy, and your bank account happy, and u happy.

Alright, enough with my opinions. Above just my points of view, so take it or leave it is up to you. take your own risk, i bear zero responsible on anything happens. One last thing, i can see from your post up there, u just talk about how to promote, how to charge, does look matters, cost... money money money. Don't even talk about how u wanna teach them well. Don't fck with education f u cant teach well!

Anyhow i hope u can teach them well--> they get As, parent happy--> they tell their friends--> their friends come and join, fees--> get As again--> tell friends again-->join, get fees-->As------- Nvr end.

Teach like shit and care about money--> they don't get As--> Parent sad--> send them elsewhere---> end.

Clear enough.

I am a school teacher. I know how to score, but not all students can score or pass...This is the reality.

Helping average students to score A, is not difficult.
Helping very weak students to pass, thats tough !

networking is very important.
as 101 said, parent will make the final call.

if you muslim, maybe use the surau/mosque network to spread the word.

and tuition is a long term business as well, start small first, suffer first, then when the word got spread, that's when you claim your victory.

Some parent might not feel comfortable having male teacher around their small children (my personal view), so might as well ask help from you wife to promote too..

start by flyers around the neighbourhood

You are a male teacher in penang? Island or perai?

Good luck if you are in butterworth and trying to be home tutor. I don't think parents would like.

Anyway, good luck overall.
