Front and back, yes. But the sides need to be strong, there is no space for a crumple zone. That's why you need side and curtain etc. airbags, to protect your head from being smashed.

A head on collision that causes a heavy car to spin out of control, while entering a narrow road? Sounds like he was speeding.

Maybe he thought he is Schumacher and turned of the ESP. Though I think Mercedes doesn't let you, not completely (there's a video on YouTube of someone crashing a brand new Aston Martin Rapide cause he turned of the ESP and touched the throttle in a curve.)
