Hi I got this shrew problem recently in my BH as well. Tried plain baiting with the rat poison and traps to no avail.
Finally decided to wrap the normal rat poison sold at supermarket , with pieces of bread. This seems to work as the bread were eaten up and the shrew carcass was found inside the BH after a few days. the bread must have masked the smell of the poison pellets. |

Hi Philoswiftlet
I used the King Kong brand this time. It took about 4 pieces of bread compressed into separate lumps with the poison to do the job. I used to trap them in my office using toasted bread. But the 2nd time it does not work even after burning the trap to get rid of any scent left behind. This post has been edited by sekosan: Apr 12 2012, 11:38 PM |

I did not notice any difference in the texture of the nests even after a month or so in the freezers...... but I am no food expert .
Any guys know of alternatively insecticide to kill off bird mites ? Eventually they are going to get immunity through our frequent use in the BH. As it is now the effectiveness seems to be thinning. |

All our fellow farmers should take basic precautions when entering their BH
1) Wear good face masks 2) Make sure the shoes of people entering the BH are sterilized with perhaps a Dettol dip. 3) Avoid hand feeding the birds or make sure hygiene is observed 4)clean out our BH and remove any dead birds immediately with tongs 5) if we need to handle the young birds , we need to wear plastic gloves and throw or wash the gloves asap. Hope we can all ride through this storm and our fellow farmers in Vietnam or elsewhere will also take the basic steps to reduce our exposures. |

Hi Just caught a musang in our BH. There were dead birds with only their wings found in certain places inside . Those farmers growing fruit trees around their BH be aware that the musang is also into birds.
Also for those who have or are scare of bird mites going into their ears try spraying fendona onto earplugs for 7 or 8 ( their breeding cycle) consecutive nites or longer before you sleep or every time you enter your BH. You can buy these plastic plugs along with swimming goggles in department stores. Tried buying these plugs separately but they wouldn't sell. Or wear a shower cap before you enter your BH !! |
