Everything up except the birdnests; do have positive thinking and maybe soon, we shall be able to get back what our's.......a fair price for our nests.

15 years ago, EBN was over Rm6K and now, we are 30% of what once was but everything up by at least 3 folds. By adjusting to the value base on the standard of cost of living now, our EBN should be at least value @ Rm10K per kilo..........won't that be nice....C'mon, can't I at least be allow to dream hahahaha.

TF, how many people do the Fed want for the meeting on D day cos the Association here has already stop non member but BH owners from registering for the meeting. but I strongly disagree. I believe that we shouldn't stop at 3K and better if we can maybe 10K or even more to show that we really mean business and not play play only lah.

From what I heard, we have 3 bus load of birdhouse owners going from here....we all there to show support and unity over the unhappy events facing our industry......

Many Swiftlets Associations didn't know about the event at all or the Presidents of these Clubs aren't supportive of the event.....according to Ms. Carol, press news of the event will be on paper tomorrow.

Sorry I am not involved in organisation just relaying the messages.

Yes I agree that the more the better but I believe the organisers are afraid they will not be able to handle the situation. There is nothing stopping individuals from attending by themselves.

All state associations have been informed, so I was told. Call your respective association heads for more details on coaches and other travel arrangements.

Phone numbers for most associations have been given in last few postings.

Our agri mb said he don't understand why farmers organising the forum this weekend as he already said no RFID in farms but only RFID in processing plants.

Actually why we have forum this week then?

Our aim is no RFID at all or no RFID in farms?
The organiser said only 2000 register so far to attend this weekend forum.

While another bn processor tht said he managed to change his company products range n concentrate in bn bottles range n it is selling well in china.he also said
The situation now is those tht represented farmers to have dialog with the govt officers had agreed with the govt suggestion on things liked RFID, n u can see tht even association heads now own proceeding plants tht is RFID friendly anticipating govt new ruling tht only allow bn export by those plants, but now when farmers realised what actually happening, they start to oppose it...tht cause all the chaos.

He is right, why's that? Did the association representative ask farmers opinions or ever fight for farmers benefits or ever oppose it when they reckon the effects of it at all while have discussion with the govt? As they represented all farmers when dealing with the govt. why is tht?
*
The heads that you elected are looking after their own pockets first. They likely 'anticipated' or engineered the situation but has now gone out of control.

The reason they are now making noise is the falling price of EBN which is affecting them big time as they are the big timers who stocked up as the prices dropped, hoping to monopolize big time.

Some caused the price drop to be able to stock up in a big way and wait for prices to rise again after awhile. Never anticipated the 'awhile' became over a year.

Now if prices rise again, these big timers may stand to recover loses or even profit big time.

For us small timers, where do we go, left also wrong, right also wrong where to turn to?

No monopoly.

No 30ppm nitrite, use WHO standards.

No restrictions on export except on govt. levies,

and we will be on the way to recovery.

With No restrictions, no monopolies, the big timers will have to sell at market prices, us small timers sell our stock to the world at current prices and eventually the big timers will also have to sell at the lower prices...............until the current stock is depleted and then the farmers will increase prices according to supply and demand not some big timer stocking and controlling the market.

Just my 2 sen worth on world EBN economy.

One of the objective of 29.7 protest is to gather signatures of all farmers to bantah RFID, allow raw nests export n no monopoly in bn industry. We already have 3,000 farmers protesting it last week....

Why not the organiser of 29.7 distribute the signatures forms and those who cannot go still can submit their signatures as support?

We are running out of time, we need to act fast.

Anyone know the organiser? Please call or SMS them whether this will work or not, as even in selangor 21.7 not all selangor farmers attend tht meeting but I was there representing 100 of my relatives who also involved in this industry.

Added on July 25, 2012, 5:16 pmThis is only for those tht really cannot attend the protest and it is still very very critical for all farmers to go to the protest but they can kumpul all signatures and sent representatives to submit it on tht day.

M’SIA SWIFTLET BREEDERS ASSOCIATION will be organizing a ONE MALAYSIAN above political parties and races peaceful MALAYSIA RESCUE SWIFTLET BREEDERS SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN & ASSEMBLY held on 29th July @ 1 pm in SAFIRA COUNTRY CLUB, Butterworth, nearby SUNWAY and directly opposite Penang Bird’s Park.

Attached are the proposed RESOLUTIONs which will be passed in the 729 ASSEMBLY. Please feel free to print out as handbills to be distributed or to be posted up in the websites.

For your latest info, reliable source confirmed that, due to mounting pressure and appeal from the M'SIA BREEDERS ASSOCIATION's firm and without compromise stand to organize the ASSEMBLY as scheduled, the CABINET is finally on the toes doing something positive now, hopefully.

Do not be surprised that what the breeders are insisting legitimately would become reality soon. But as long as it is not in black & white and official, we shall continue to launch more protests and awareness wave after wave till all our legitimate demands met.

Nonetheless, there are quarters with reasons known to them trying hard to sabotage by spreading rumours and discouraging breeders to attend this assembly.

Please invite as many as possible to support. Those who wish to say something to the floor would be given opportunity. Those who wish to join us in the Association are gladly welcome. Please be aware, we are all in the same boat and this boat belongs to the genuine breeders of M'SIA. It is truly an ASSOCIATION and not ASSOCIATION SDN BHD in disguise and tool for some unscrupulous political bugs and cronies. It does not belong to any individual with hidden agenda. No one can dictate us as we are truly democratic as much as we could. We shall fight these greedy evils at all cost till victory and let them taste their own shit.

Not only your positive comments and suggestions we need, but also we need your physical participation, help and financial support in any way to enable us to continuously to fend the rights of the breeders and those in the industry from future abuses.

Regards,
David Lim 012-4850778

Welcome home. Maybe Chinese swimmer has EBN regularly which explains for her phenomenal swim.

Penang missed much support from EBN house owners from the East Coast. Maybe you can organise another rally in the East coast.

Indonesia will always want to use Malaysia as an outlet because of the Import duties. Quote HKTDC "In China import duty for HS 04100010 birds nest is levied at 25% plus VAT 17% ad valorum (on value basis, not on weight basis) for import from most favoured nations."

Also Malaysia will get blamed for high nitrite, adulterated EBN, Red EBN etc. when EBN from Indon is re exported through Malaysia. A very clever move by some greedy Malaysians

Withholding evidence whilst threatening to incriminate someone in return for any desired action is essentially Blackmail.

The informant should produce the evidence immediately otherwise it might backfire.

Guys, I decided to change the external sound and guess what...i get almost double the population i currently already have! Around 7-7.30pm I saw lots of birds (i assume they are new cause they flew into the entrance then straight away fly out...some even go in the entrance abit then come out d...then circle circle and go in again).
Is it normal? They havent even go down to the nesting area...

They did it for few times then after that enter straight without coming out already ^.^ I just hope they "enjoy" their stay...
After 7.30pm i still saw this kinda case, but mostly at this time, all the oldies came back...fly/dive straight into the entrance hole. Like so confident like that...hahaha...some came back alone, some in pairs and some in a group of 4 (enter 1 by 1).

The feeling of watching them fly/dive in really good! haha.. Hopefully this will maintain la... Gonna continue using the new sound for 1 week and see how.
Ps. the night before (still the old sound), i waited since 6pm...i din see anything like tonight... all i see is, around 7.45pm, all the oldies came back and enter straight into the entrance...
The question is, let's say those new birds enjoy their stay and the next evening, they came back, will they still "hesitate" to enter the entrance? or will just fly/dive in like the oldies?

Im sorry but I don know why I can't embed the video here... icon_question.gif

Changing the sound usually attracts new birds.

7 - 7.30pm is not a good time to guage whether you are calling new birds, as this is also the time when the old birds already living n nesting in the BH are returning. Will be best to check if the new sound is attracting birds at all times before 6pm. (2 hrs before the Azan-sunset)

Returning birds surprised by the new sound will fly out and then fly back in.

It is always fun to watch the returning birds and also spot the owls if they are attacking.

You need CCTV inside the dog kennel or roving room to see if the new sound is getting the birds into the nesting room and whether your roving room is conducive to the birds from they way they fly in and around.

URGENT

To all fellow comrades of Bird's Nest Industry of Malaysia,

The attached file of 33 pages is the drafted PROTOCOL that all of us totally objected and protested against by attending the 721 & 729 PROTEST ASSEMBLY. But today, many associated members of the Federation of Malaysia Bird's Nest Merchants Associations were misled by the several committee with less than 24 hours notice to attend an EMERGENCY MEETING with Datuk Dr Aziz the Ketua Pengarah of Department of Veterinary Service at 2pm 07.08.2012 in Putrajaya. The EXCUSE given was to discuss amending of the PROTOCOL pending to be signed on 20.09.2012.

However, during the meeting, there wasn't any document given and most were shocked to hear Dr Aziz said the meeting is to reaffirm the PROTOCOL agreed and approved many months earlier by the committee of the FEDERATION and that no further amendment allowed. Despite numerous requests made for the copy to be distributed to all attendees, yet Dr Aziz refused except to agree to read out the content. To the dismay and unbelievable of most, this is the exact same copy with all the RFID which we strongly objected and rejected before the assemblies.

We found that we are all being cheated and taken for a ride as Dr Aziz together with several Federation Committee set up a SCAM to lure us to come to sign attendance which would be used by Dr Aziz and the Minister of Agriculture to mislead the CABINET that this PROTOCOL is supported and agreeable by all the representatives attending the meeting to have it passed in CABINET.

Despite our protests and our disagreement on the spot and that we have the recording of the meeting, yet Dr Aziz refused and adjourned the meeting leaving us alone.

By signing and implementing the PROTOCOL on coming 20.09.2012, 95% of all in the industry will be bankrupt, wiped out and become jobless except the few cronies of the Ministers concerned. It is going to be sky breaking down on all of us.

We are very desperate and frustrated and as such, we hereby confirm that we will be publicizing the truth to all in the country and will be preparing to hold continuous waves of PROTEST ASSEMBLIES across the country as from now and as soon as possible.

Measures considered are to appeal to each and everyone affected to either individually or jointly organizing the protests and that all shall give full support, to create more awareness of the MONOPOLY, to either individually or in organized group to investigate into the SCAM and to expose all the culprits responsible behind posted on websites or facebooks and to report to police and or MACC for suspected foul play to cheat to monopolize the industry. Please do not be by-stander. Please help in to help yourself. We need to be united against those greedy and abusive Govt officials and their cronies trying to monopolize to rob us. UNITY IS STRENGTH. TIME FOR MOBILIZATION.

Please help email to all.

I should get paid for this !

Anyway, the best way to maintain a steady temperature is to have double walls of clay type bricks as these store the heat from the daytime and slowly release it throughout the night. Since this was not done initially, it'll be difficult to make such corrections now.

Use a coil 100m. of 25mm Black Poly pipe and 2 large 100+ gals Poly water tanks for storage. The poly pipe is your solar heat collector and the tanks store the hot water. Insulate the tanks with 3" styro foam. Increase the length of poly pipe if you need hotter water.

For a convection type solar water heater, bear in mind hot water rises or otherwise use an electric water pump to circulate the water. Make sure circulation is not on at night.

Use this hot water for your humidifier, set the humidifier to switch on and off via a thermostat.

Another method is to build a moat around the BH. This method is employed by many for BHs around Thailand but it requires a lot of space.

A water pool at the roof of the BH also works but that attracts many other problems with leaks, weight etc.

Please note that in the Indonesian protocol, the raw nest are first treated by 'Pastuerization' ie by treating with high heat, for a few seconds and this effectively lowers the active bacteria to low levels for a few days. Without active bacteria the nitrite level will be lowered.

Pasteurization is similar to how raw products like fresh milk is treated to make it safe for immediate human consumption.

This process is clearly indicated in the Indon protocol and anyone with a basic knowledge on Health and Veterinary science will note. Clearly people like our Ministers, DVS, MoH, and MCA are not working in our interest by ignoring this fact.

Pasal 2
Sarang burung walet yang dapat diekspor ke
Republik Rakyat China hanya sarang burung
walet yang termasuk dalam Pos Tarif/HS
ex. 0410.00.10.00.
Sarang burung walet sebagaimana dimaksud pada
ayat (1) harus memenuhi persyaratan:
telah memenuhi proses seleksi, pencucian,
pembersihan dari kotoran, pemanasan sama atau
lebih dari 7O'C (tduh puluh derajat celcius)
dalam waktu sekurang-kurangnya 3,5 (tiga koma
lima) detik; dan
dibungkus dalam kemasan dan dicantumkan
label yang memuat informasi dalam bahasa
Indonesia, bahasa inggris, dan bahasa China
sekurang-kurangnya mengenai nama dan berat
produk, nomor registrasi dan nama produsen
peternak walet, nama, alamat, nomor registrasi
produsen, persyaratan penyimpanan, tanggal
produksi, nomor kontrol veteriner (NKV) dan
informasi terkait lainnya.

Also very clear that Indon does not need RFID, which indicates that China NEVER set RFID as a requirement, but our Ministers and Associations say the opposite. Indon only offers traceability to the source of the EBN via registered labelling.

There has been no proof given on China's requirements.

So, why the complicated process for Malaysians. Why is Chua junior not standing up for a predominantly chinese Industry.

We all know why mdm Carol from Penang said what she said cos she does what the horse demands.

Hi seniors,
my first rental JV BH have some improvement on swiftlet droppings in recent months but remain zero-nest after 21months and we might have to end it during year end and exit the rental contract.

Good news I have gotten the keys for another bought shoplot and will begin BH renovation soon for the top floor with metal roof. This is also JV with another family friend.
I have a question, if the wall facing the west evening sun is built with bricks, can the building sustain the weight ?
The wall is facing the wind from the river so I would prefer brickwall that can converse some heat for the night which lightweight bricks cannot.
There is a outer wall with glass windows.

Here is a simple map I've drawn up for reference. My shoplot is highlighted in Red in the middle of the picture.

Thank you for your attention, hope to receive your opinion.

After 21 months NO nest, you've seriously got to find someone in your area who can help you. Where are you located?

If you are building your own BH and doing it all by yourself or using the same"Experts" you better think again. There is something fundamentally wrong with the approach.

In johor.
1 of our JV partner have a very successful BH so we just followed his leadership during renovation.
Since the place is rented and now BN price drop until so low, I calculated need to harvest 300 nest to break-even the monthly rental. A very far and unlikely target with risks that the landlord might evict us without proper compensation.
If continue to pump in thousands to paint the walls from pitch-black back to white and build brick wall to replace current "boarded up windows" , I don't think it's a good idea trying to test the bottomless pit.
Ground floor is eatery everyday got smell blow up.
Already come to this stage must accept the failure..... do it without regrets ... we won't be pointing the blame on anybody.

Will be putting what I learned to good use for the second BH. Planning to seek help from a boss in this BN industry to help us do the entry hole and nesting planks while I do the tweeter+wiring and handle all the maintenance over the next 1-2 decade.
*
All the fundamental requirements for a successful BH are in this forum. There is NO set style and as such requires keen observation of the surroundings. One method that is successful in one area may not work at all in another area, but the fundamental requirements are similar.

You need someone who is willing to spend time to study your intended BH and immediate area to see if it can be feasible. It takes time, effort and experience to ascertain if the building and area will be good or mediocre. Having said that, even the most experienced sometimes produce 'lemons'.

Good Luck.

WW we are all very discouraged by what has been happening to our rice bowl but we are doing our best to reverse the current trend. Let us hope for if we do not have any hope it will be the end for all of us.

For a few hundred years, EBN has been in great demand and because of the action of a greedy few, consumers have lost confidence but I hope eventually this confidence will return as we learn to control the cheaters, adulterers and the profiteers.

We, to protect our industry must make a concerted effort to stop anyone from adulterating natural EBN. Even if it means reporting the persons to the authorities. We cannot risk another incident. There will always be cheaters but if we show them that we mean business, there will be fewer. I know most of us had been guilty
of turning a blind eye on those making 'Blood' nests and false or adulterated nests for the past years. We got to change.

I have to agree some pros can even produce lemons. Earlier this year, i posted some photos on my newly extended bird house. 10 months later as today, not even a single bird nest in the new BH. Old and new BH just side to side, i connect them internally and use the same sounds. Still no result. Going to make some modification during semester break.

Throughout my observation in recent years, i notice swiftlet does change their behavior. Previously it was quite easy to lure the birds into my bird house. But now, it is so difficult even i fail to lure my own bird in the past 10 months.

Yes, observation is the most important aspect in improving your BH.

It is quite well known that joining a new BH to an existing BH by taking down a wall etc. will usually not work. This is because the birds in the old BH have already got the map of the old BH into their heads and the new annexe does not 'exist'. The simplest solution is to have separate in/out holes for each BH. You can keep the knocked down wall but have another dog kennel or well and the birds will think it's a new place. The advantage is that young birds from one house will populate the adjoining house not knowing that it's the same. That has been basic knowledge for sometime now.

For unknown reasons AF are attracted to the calls of the same specie but will not always react in the same way. A good call here might be a bad call elsewhere. They always react when there are changes to the call patterns which is why many people are making constant changes to their calls and also editing new sounds. All these are basically just the same sounds recorded from the birds when they roost. Just mixed and edited over and over again to make it seem different. We need to understand the birds' language but failing that, mixing and editing seems to work wonders.

For any machine to work flawlessly for a long time it has to be simple and strong. The chicken coop humidifier is proven and tested over many many years, simple and built of materials that should last for several years. OTOH the ultrasonic humidifier, in principle is very simple but prone to fast wearing. The crystal surfaces have a fine conductor layer which is corroded by water. The conductor is often made of cheap copper which through electrolysis will not last long. The crystal being quartz glass will fracture when over stressed or the conductor will delaminate. The frequency the crystal is made to vibrate is very high, 20,000 cycles per second or more and made to work in a dense medium like water which in turn causes more stress similarly our tweeters last much longer because it works in the air. Think of the chicken coop humidifier at 1000 rpm or 17 cycles per second and the ultrasonic at over 20000 cycles per second, which will wear out first !

Luck is expertise that others do not understand. Careful and keen observation will go a long long way in eliminating 'Luck'

Insects and Parasites in the BH

There are many insects and parasites, as well as bacteria in any BH and it is these that maintain a balanced mini ecosystem.

On the floor, there are dung beetles that consume the bird shit.

In mid air, there are also many flying insects that are usually hatched from the feces of the birds as the birds often eat insects that are carrying eggs.

There are also other insects like cockroaches that are opportunistic that feed on the remnants of the bird shit.

If one looks carefully, it's like an insect zoo down there, on the floor of your BH.

The birds will naturally carry blood sucking parasites, as do chickens. The greater the population of birds the greater the number of such parasites.

I do not know the life cycle of these parasites but they are natural. An infestation will of course spread to any human entering the BH, similarly with a chicken farm.

There may be a connection between the bird shit on the floor with the hatching of the birds' parasites but no conclusive study has been carried out. In a chicken farm, the birds are sometimes dusted with an insecticide as well as treating the shit on the floor. The similarity in both is that the chickens and swiftlets are both elevated above the shit.

Fendona is a 'Human' safe insecticide as it is approved to be used in areas where food for human consumption is prepared, ie kitchens, restaurants etc. There are many other human safe(by following instructions) insecticides that are by far cheaper. Carbaryl, Sevin is commonly use for this purpose.

Since swiftlets never touch the ground (on purpose) it can be assumed that theses parasites climb up via the walls to infest the birds on the nests, so spraying the walls will kill all the parasites trying to infest theses birds. Continuous regular spraying the floor will destroy the balance as all insects will be killed and this may reduce the 'smell' that the birds are so happy to live with.

If you inspect a nest closely, you'll often see worms/maggots, parasites and eggs on the nests, especially the 2-3 layered nests. These are quite easily removed by first freezing the nests and then blowing them away with compressed air.
