GUIDELINES TO MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL ETIQUETTE

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE SPECIFIC TRAILS

PERSONAL SAFETY
-Wear a brain bucket(yes..that's a helmet) whenever you ride
-Do not travel into remote areas without informing others
-Ride within your capabilities.Ensure that if you want to push your limits, you buddies are around to support you.
-Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares.

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS(NON RIDERS)
-Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because people judge all cyclist by my actions
-Give way to motorised trail users, ie. motor cross bikes etc, because generally we will end up worse off in an accident.
-Alert others when approaching.Get a bell, or "Excuse me" works quite well

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS
-Riders have the right of way.If you are pushing your bike, leave the riding line open for others to go past.
-Rider up hill has the right of way.
-Allow faster riders to past

SPEED
-Approach turns and bends in aniticipation that there's someone there
-Make your presence known when approaching someone or any turns

IMPACT ON THE TRAIL
-Leave the wildlife and fauna alone.Magic mushrooms are bad for you.
-Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible.
-Dont't take short cuts over /around technical sections. If you can't ride it,walk it.
-Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where people are afraid to maintain the trails.
-Do not litter.Take out whatever you take in.
Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with you

FUN
-You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cogs, and make good friends on your ride.
-Develop sense of humor. Some people say it's good for the soul.

Yup... Kana buang from the outer edge of a berm is no fun man... Berms usually has a kicker to bring the rear end up so high faceplant might just happen!

But washing out on a berm is highly impossible mah rite? Unless a real shredder and lean pass the angle of the berm kau kau?

I am dilemma in between "Rockshox Recon Silver TK Solo Air" which comes with Scott Scale 60 2012 or "Rockshox XC30 TK Coil" Scott Scale 70 2012.

I'm still waiting for my new bike to reach our shore perhaps by this week. rclxub.gif

as mentioned, take a look at giant.

if you can find 2nd hand xtc or xtc SE(2009-11), it would be even wayyyy better..

Ya Bro. Scale 60 has better groupset. It's 3o speed instead of 27 speed in Scale 70.
It has remote lock-out too. Gotta pay extra $900.00 toll if we get Scale 60. sweat.gif

So bro, in your opinion. Does it worth paying extra for Scale 60?? rclxub.gif

hi bros n sifus,

did any1 here familiar with bike geometry?
I'm not very familiar with frame geometries, so I just attached pictures for reference.
(mine is size M)

Attached Image

I'd just like to ask if I could install a 120mm (or up to 140mm) travel fork on my bike.
would it effect my handling and cause crack to my frame?

i was thinking on getting either REBA RL or RECON GOLD RL.

is it a huge different in performance wise between solo and dual air?

Hows the frame too small effect jumps..just wanna know aje..not that Ill be doing jumps anytime soon....
Does the bike's travel also play part? I mean if the jump is too crazy it ll probably bottom out the suspensions and not fully absorb the impact...leading the dude to slip and pop out of the cockpit...(i think the fellas cock also kena the impact)

By the way..if you look at the video...towards the end ...in true MTB spirit ...his friends were laughing at him hahah tongue.gif

If you care about warranties ...then you ll need to check if your HT frame can take 120mm...if not anything happen to it you ll wont be able to claim...

Having said that...I did that (quite sure its not covered) but it really benefit me going through some of the nasty trail sections

What frame are u using?

im using Commencal frame. my current fork travel is only 100mm.
was thinking dat since need to change fork, might as well get a decent one.
IF i jump ship to FS in near future, atleast i can use back d fork.

so with dat frame geometry, is it possible? hmm.gif

theoretically your frame will crack, but practically no one cracked their frames yet. garyfatty sumbat 160 on dj frame and ride like a boss.

Solo and Dual air. One is with neg air chamber, one is without. Dual will give a more supple small bump compliance.

Hahaha... That's what everybody thinks, until they get to know different wheel axle availability vs stanchion dia vs quality and etc... There's where it get expensip. sweat.gif

Seriously, can or cannot is not for us to say. Unless you found someone that has ridden the exect same frame as yours and did sumbat a 140mm travel fork in it. But then again, that person can only share with you their experience so far, how it rides/climbs/descends and etc.

Only the manufacturer/designer can tell you that. But ofcourse, they will say no due to lawsuit possibility. blush.gif

To be frank, I hate long travel forks. I prefer short travel (100mm or 120mm) with a long A2C. But that's just me.

But ofcourse, they will say no due to lawsuit possibility. blush.gif

No exp with either REBA RL or RECON GOLD RL. IMHO, I'd top up to get the Revelation or RS Sektor.

i think 2.5-3.5K can get very nice bikes from giant/specialized/merida/scott. dont forget you need to set aside at least 400 for helmet, tubes, gloves, pump, hydration.

giant- sen aik
scott - bikepro
specialized - concept store
merida- ss2 merida / heehong cycles

worth going to kedai basikal samy at batu caves to take a look as well.

Why is everyone talking about the so called legendary T-Bolt when I'm no longer using it? LOL!

I'm using Marzocchi 888 CR dual-crown on the Demo 8, don't really like the feel. I still prefer Boxxer's feel and performance but there aren't much LBS that has it here in Penang.

But the Saracen Zen and Ariel are getting good reviews lately...maybe the mags are biased towards UK bikes ...but dont take my word for it ...

At the end of the day...buy something that make you enjoy each ride ...be it a Tbolt or a Yeti

To enjoy you ll need to have good basics I guess ....no point buying a high end bike if you re gonna push it down the hill ...

From the video, I see he is too far back. So, I assume the frame a bit too small for him? Weight should be distributed in around the centre of the bike.

i think for a quite big drop....
the weight should be slightly rear-biased rite?
so the front end wont be nose-diving like what happened to......

but yeah looking at the vid...he is floating way too far back...
and u can see how the 4" shock kick him off balance during the landing....
making him land on the sternum....no gooding feel~

Bash #206, The Vampire Trail – Ulu Beranang/Lenggeng
Date:Sun 27th Nov 2011

Venue
Estates and mountain jungle between Ulu Beranang and Lenggeng, a little ways south of Broga town.

Parking
Village football pitch. Please avoid churning up the place with your car or mountain bike. The Asli here are a fierce bunch.

Parking is contingent on us getting permission from the village chief. Otherwise we will be parking in Ulu Beranang itself (see directions below). I will post confirmation by next Tuesday.

Trail Description
This ride will suck the life blood out of you.

That’s the objective of our Bash this year. Whether through the tendrils and proboscis of the local flora and fauna or just trail conditions, you will bleed and suffer in one form or another.

Do not attempt Long if:
a) You faint at the sight of blood. (Goes without saying doesn’t it.)
b) You have no cow-sense, don’t know your limits, and have something to prove on a downhill.
c) You are endo-prone.
d) You have not at least ridden more than 1 Bash where you didn’t cramp or want to throw up.
e) You have no upper body strength.
f) You don’t like riding Kiara.
g) You’re a roadie who thinks this is going to be easy. (How hard can it be, it’s only xxkm!)
h) You got a busted hip and waddle like a duck. Quack!

Seriously, Long, is not suitable for non-technical riders. There are downhills (I have called it Magic Link) where if an accident does occur it will be major – possibly FATAL.

Commit to your line. Or get off and walk. . There will be NO room for mistakes.

Extraction will be almost impossible. We will stand over you and chuck a parang so you can put yourself out of your misery. All Long riders are advised to bring along their first aid medical kits and make sure brakes are in top condition. You will need at least painkillers, antihistamines, splints and something to draw attention (like a whistle) in your medical kits.

Keeping with our theme, we’ve not forgotten Short riders need to suffer too. Terrain is rolling through kampong roads, rubber/palm estates and vegetable farms with a few gnarly bits thrown in. (My wife freaked out when we did a trial run on Short. Luckily I was saved when my 12 year old started laughing at her.) Distance is about 14km. Blood sucking creepy crawlies in the Short vicinity should be absent – they’ve gone to haunt Long riders. Suitable for the stronger kids who can carry their bikes short distances as well as push on steeper sections. You will suffer even more if your kids make you carry their bikes! A few open sections – bring sunblock.

It has taken us 1 Year to find the Magic Link to join up the trails. Ride safely and you will be guaranteed to enjoy it.

Directions
Take your favourite route to the main entrance of Nottingham University in Semenyih.

0 Zero trip at the traffic light in front of the University main entrance
3.5 Rabbit farm on right, Botak Hill hikers parked on left
4.7 Broga, turn right. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT THROUGH ARCH.
9.6 Village of Kampung Kapal, proceed straight
10.7 Village of Ulu Beranang, turn left. Small blue signpost, just behind and partially hidden by blue cage, is for Kampung Jeram Kedah.
10.9 Houses, keep left.
13.4 Turn left at fork.
13.6 Keep left and go over bridge.
14.2 Park at football pitch. (N2 54.308 E101 57.124)

-Giant using pressfit BB and scott using normal BB

-Giant 27 speed Scott 30 speed

-I like giant frame more,it looks nicer. For the gear set i like scott since it's 30 speed.

Conclusion = it's still up to you smile.gif

The XTC 3 posted in BBS is expensive than the scott coz it's using FOX fork. The specs is different from the 1 you seeing in giant website.

Aiyo bro relax la,they joking only.Words don't have expression like humans do.Different ppl different taste on bike. Some will love it and some won't.The most important thing is you yourself love it.Choosing bike is like choosing a girl to date. Some prefer certain brand some prefer the specs.Just like ppl prefer girls with pretty look or girls with big boobs. biggrin.gif

Enjoy riding and build on the basics first ...once you have the confidence and the ability...then its time to upgrade ...

At the end of the day ...its still Pedal to the metal/plastic/spd...
You have an expensive bike but you dont have strong legs and skills pun no point...

nothing wrong with merida. dealer network for merida in UK and US not good or non existent, thats y you dont read about it in magazines, since the magazines are all from US and UK. i dont care about brands anyways, try to go for value for money. for xc HT i would go for scott or merida, value for money full sus giant anthem or trance, should be able to enjoy 80% of the trails in malaysia already.

They all have been riding for years, starting with a few sponsors to a dozen. By the time you can be like one of them, I'm sure your finances double up as well.

At the end of the day, it's what riding that defines on how you really feel. Could be the passion, the bike, or just yourself.

Did I say HT cheap? hmm.gif ...of course there are some HT that are more expansive than some FS...if u use a Carbon or a Titanium HT of course its more expansive ...frame itself could cost 6K...

Usually entry level MTB are HT...

Ayam just got my Scott full suspension ride. After I ridden it few round in the taman to test out. I noticed that the rear shock has some oil discharged. It seems leaked. The rear sus operates by Air+ Oil. Wondering what was happened. The lockout doesn't seem to function as well. Anyone knows how to solve? just wanna know what's happened.. (I will bring it back to bikepro later)

1 thing about mtb, if most of your ride buddies ride full sap, you will change to full sap eventually, same goes to HT, titanium.

nowdays most of my ride buddies has a roller at the back of their crank, there goes my money laugh.gif

I'm thinking of building a slopestyle bike, but only most custom made frames for sponsored riders have the best and right geometry. Any idea on what production frames that are almost similar to this?

This video was very informative, as I recently crashed my bike into a pile of hammers and was not quite sure if it was safe to continue riding it.

Just wanna ask ....about bike cleaning ...

Each time after cleaning your bike do you degrease and relube your chains ? Or relube enough?

I just learned that you can use WD40 (which is cheaper) to degrease ...rather than use a more expansive Degreaser ..ie Finish Line stuffs ....

I only do degrease if the chain and other moving parts really really really dirty. But relube after every wash.
Try not to use WD40 at all as it will "karat" your chains.

Cheapest degrease is degreaser sell in dyi shop. Wd40 is expensive and is not intend for degrease. Wd40 n rp7 is water displacer.

U degrease with water base degreaser n water. Then spray wit wd40/rp7 to remove the water n coat the metal from rust. Few hours later or prior ride relube with chain lube. Best is do this after every offeoad ride.

I don't use raibow painted chains wo? Also cassette is anondized, not painted. I use on my Deore crank, which is painted. I don't leave it on for too long, but I don't see any paint chip. Heck when I raw the cranks, I have to use lotta paint strippers and alot of elbow grease to depaint it.

Not sure bout the hub & frame though... I took it off the wheels when I did mine.

Even when they didnt use the barcode system i still dont like their pricing. It's slightly expensive than others and the customer service attitude is kinda poor.

Have you tried khcycle service? Ok ah? In terms of service I do think bikepro among the better ones...
Anyone know when the new KSH Tmn Tun going to open?

Raju's father shop is Sen Aik. laugh.gif

I had went to KH Cycle and Bikepro before I got myself a Scott's bike.

Bikepro service is so far the best. At least they are patient enough to explain.

Ohhh thats how you Like a posting in forum ... thumbup.gif
*
After every off road ride, here's what I usually do. Degrease the chain and gear with a degreaser (I use a citrus-based degreaser, any brand should do), coat my chain with a thin layer of WD-40 to displace any moisture, rinse the chain thoroughly with soap, lubricate the chain (I use Finish Line's Dry Lube). As for my forks and rear shocks, I lubricate my fork stanchions with silicone spray (don't use normal lube as it may crack your rubber seals!). Just my 2 cents! biggrin.gif

Great tip!

Some questions:
Q1:
In our weather and muddy condition ..is it ok to use Finish Line's Dry Lube? I have both that Dry Lube and Amoils Chain Lube...so am not sure which one is better to use ....

Q2:
What silicone spray do you use? Muc Offs? I ve been using the lubes on the stachions ..I thought it was ok

@majorsinbad: Thanks mate! biggrin.gif

If you cycle in wet weather (muddy/wet), I'd definitely recommend Finish Line's Wet Lube.

As for silicone spray. I'm using this one from "3-In-One".

Degreaser, usually use diesel if no one is looking and a home made organic degreaser (given) otherwise.

I use most any aerosol lube in a can, motorcycle based ones too to lube the chain. If not it would be engine oil laugh.gif

Sillycon spray same I use which ever is the cheapest, even the liquid ones they market for car windows.

Sorry forgot to say that I am a roadie and am assembling or in the process of collecting parts (cheap) to build an old Scotts DJ bike.

Currently waiting to buy a 'new' stem, 180mm or larger disc (with suitable caliper mount) , handle bar and expanding fork plug. Any leads would be good, especially for the expanding fork plug since I dont really want to cut the steerer tube on the bike just yet.

Whats already on the bike

a) 2nd hand Cannondale stem

b) 2nd hand bar

c) Rockshox Sektor U-turn fork (new)

d) BB dunno what using it because it spins freely and quietly

e) Crank dunno what cheap Shimano stuff, only the granny gear is slightly worn I may drill it out and replace that.

f) Sram X-7 9spd groupset, cassette is 11-34. (new)

g) Bengal Helix 3.0 brakes with token 160mm disc, disc are 2nd hand plan to change brake fluid to 5.1

h) cable housings using the what ever came with the bike

i) tyres hmmmm no label road going Kenda's which need to be levered on

j) 27.2 X 400mm seatpost (new)

k) a no brand seat (all day comfortable) zero adjustment

the majority of the items are bought off of BBS (COD only), and bike shops that shall not be named. I walk out of shops if I dont like the look on their dirty little spoilt face whistling.gif .

here's how i have been cleaning and maintaining my drivetrains.have not had any issues.

1) -use a chain cleaner/scrubber with a citrus or bio-degradable degreaser solution ie holy cow or simple green. i use holy cow.
-shift the gears to the middle for both the cog and crank and spin away in both directions with the chain cleaner.
-place a brush with hard brittles at your rear cog and spin away
-repeat the process with fresh solution.

2) rinse the drivetrain clean with water and dab dry it with some old rag/socks that are absorbant. do a couple of bunny hops to displace the water whistling.gif

3) spray RP7 onto the chain while spinning your crank to get the solution onto all links. use an old rag to wipe of access. you may see black stains and these are from the rollers. repeat step 1 if its a sight for sore eyes

4) lube just right before every ride.

finishline dry lube and epic clean ride works best for me even for muddy and wet conditions. i'd stay away from finishline wet lube coz it just attracts too much crap.the worst lube i had tried.

best of all....it doesn't cost me a bomb

What you're looking for is a chain retention device. To avoid dropped chains?

Besides from the chainguards like MRP's and E13's, you can also work with a a sandwiched guards. I have a bashguard installed where the outer chainring used to be as well a granny guard where the granny ring used to be.

A singlespeed chainring (without shift ramps on it) like E13, Raceface, Chromag drool.gif will also helps to retain the chain better as it also has a higher teeth profile.

A proper length chain will also minimized dropped chains. If you're running single chainring upfront, you should also be using a short cage derailleur. Two rings upfront, mid cage. 3 rings... Long cage.

Damn... After typing long long oni I notice you're asking for cranks! LOL... doh.gif

Like Abang Reza said, it's more of a frame issue. There's ISCG, ISCG5 and BB mount type of chainguides. Choose the one that fits your frame. It should not interfere with the crank movement I believe.

yes kaizer, single speed chainring is what I'm looking for. I figure not to put my T-Bolt to waste, thinking of changing to a single speed chainring, keeping it light as possible. Abang Reza said before about the frame's bottom bracket type, it should be BB mount type.

It's hard to look for BB mount type chainguides though.

I have a Truvativ Stylo 2.2 AM cranks, it's 3x10 chainrings. I just noticed that every sprocket has 4 holes to fit in the crank arm. Does that mean that I can remove individual chain rings and just use the right/middle ring and pair it with a chainguard?

Added on December 3, 2011, 1:29 amAnd the Singaporean DH event, it's a disgrace to the true DH nature. They're trying to hold an event like the Specialized Downmall in Czech Republic. Nothing but a bunch of posers and too much cash to be waste.

The Devinci bike is so clean, never hit trails I guess?

Posers! Why would you need goggles in a concrete jungle?
Why do u need a DH bike when most of the time you are pedaling? Pathetic and sad!
They r not interested on the sport but just want to pose!
