LOL the first 3 post got absolutely nothing to do with the thread... heck not even regular thread poster to start with  doh.gif

On topic, getting annoyed that despite Msia supposedly to be tax free for watches, I'm still getting cheaper prices down in Singapore!  mad.gif

What is the best discount that we can expect from retailers in malaysia compared to singapore?

On the topic of places with most attractive prices, I have heard HK is also a good place to hunt for mid-high end watches. Any comments/experiences to share?

My boss got his Submariner Date there for a significant discount a couple years back.

Carol's Watch and Jewellery Centre gave me a good price though email correspondence, lowest compared to what is offered to me locally. An aquaintance just returned with a Tag Aquaracer, didnt ask for the name of the shop though.

A new watch for hubby this Christmas. Cannot decide. IWC Portofino or Pilot Mark XVI. Can give suggestions? At the moment he got a metal TAG HUER.
THANK YOU
Lucky hubby~ Between these 2, I vote for Portofino. Classy clean look.

For an automatic mechanical watch, it is alright/necessary to wind the watch manually by turning its knob? And what is the usual number of turns to avoid overwinding? Thanks.

As I know, not all automatic watches support handwinding. You have to check if your model supports it. As for number of turns, it depends on your engine. If you could list down your model, maybe sifus here can advise you...smile.gif

Not mine yet, going to make the purchase soon after deliberating for months. It is the Raymond Weil 2838-STC-00659 model. ETA 2824 according to patryn33. I may not be wearing it during weekends, thus it would be great if a little manual winding can help smile.gif

Have been reading this thread and looking at the links on the first page trying to find my first mechanical watch. My idea of the ideal watch was for it to have brown leather straps, white face, roman numerals and blue hands.
The problem I had was that my wrists were quite thin and could only pull off watches which were between 38mm - 40mm. After days and nights of searching the links of the homages and on ebay for pictures of my ideal watch, I decided to lower my requirements and narrowed it down to the Raymond Weil Maestro series.

I initially considered buying through ebay from one of the grey sellers, however given it was my first time buying a mechanical watch, I decided it wasn't worth the risk of dissapointment should the actual watch be not what I imagined it to be based on the pictures displayed. Today I went to Sincere Watch at the Gardens and sought to view the actual watch. The price was twice that of what it was selling for on ebay, and I wandered around mid valley aimlessly while debating on whether the price difference was worth it. In the end I felt the difference was made up by the service and comfort that I was buying directly from an authorised distributor. So as a picture paints a thousand words, here is my first and hopefully not last mechanical watch:

Hi, congrats on your acquisition. Mind telling the price and how helpful is the sales advisor at the Garden's Sincere Watch? smile.gif

Case: Multi-piece stainless steel case, black DLC plated --> wondering how good is its durability and resistance to scratch.

I would like to share a very bad experience with Springwell, Mahkota Parada Melaka. Went there to look at a particular watch model with intention to purchase. As usual, no sales assistant came even when there was no other customers in the shop. After several minutes standing there staring at the display cabinet, i gestured to one of them to come over. He did, albeit looking reluctantly, and walked sloppily taking his sweet time. When he reached, I pointed out to the watch and asked for it to be taken out. He muttered, 'oh this watch 20% discount, no more nego' and ended with a loud BURP! He didnt excuse himself for his lack of manners and went to take the key, i presume. Well, I didnt wait and just left the shop.

Am afraid Internet purchasing is as dangerous as it is.
First you need to buy the seller. Trusted seller with many references are the better bet.
Safest transaction is by using paypal, but only provide the buyer if its eBay transaction, afaik.

what is the meaning of 'buy the seller'?
