a good & cheaper cooler would be coolermaster hyper 212+ around 80-100
or the cheaper brother would be hyper tx3, but it's less efficient

Turn on Cool n Quiet from the BIOS. It should help with the noise.

Shoudn't affect the performance. It just an automatic feature for the fan. Phenom II is known for having noisy stock cooler.

I don't know how much it will affect the temp though.

some motherboard, at default make the CPU FAN running @ 100% and ofkos 100% RPM on that cooler is load.
tune down the fan if your MB has the smart CPU fan thing. so the fan speed will differ according to temp.

its not a fan feature.
Its to tune down your CPU speed and vcore ( along with power consumption) when idle. hence the temperature will be lower when idle

plus not all PhenomII fan is noisy, only the x4/ x6 back edition stock cooler .

correct me if im wrong

The BE stock cooler is as loud as a hair dryer. The 212 EVO + 2 x F12 PWM would keep it rather silent. Then again, as kuntawakaw pointed, some mobos run the fan at full speed and you need the software to control the fan speed.

You are right.

Cool n Quiet in AMD processors is not a fan feature but a power saving one during periods of inactivity (idling).

What I observed with my Athlon64 X2 4800+ is that the VCore will drop from 1.30V to 1.10V and the FSB multiplier
will drop from 12x to 5x (from 2.4GHz to 1Ghz with FSB at default 200).

The core temperatures will also drop from 34 degrees Celsius without Cool n Quiet to 30 degrees Celsius.

However, the CPU fan speed remains unchanged at 2430 rpm.

The moment there is system activity, the processor immediately 'wakes up' and performs at its rated speed and power rating.

Cooler Master's CM 101 for those with really low budget. biggrin.gif Cooler Master TX-3 is a better choice compared to the 101 if one can stretch the budget just a little bit more.

Potential problem for TX-3, is very lack of choice on the fan if the stock fan is spoiled/when adding extra fan. sweat.gif

and yet the both of us are using it! tongue.gif

it works pretty well fanless as long as your processor not on load really long time.

The fanless setup will be fine, if you got top intake fan blowing to it and not looking for extremely low temperature. cool.gif
