hi, I think Scenario 3 is the best:
Wall socket ----> Surge Protector ----> AVR ----> extension wire (with multiple sockets) ----> your beloved devices  I recommend Surge Protector to be put before AVR, becoz Surge Protector will "kill" any power surge from wall socket before the power surge can damage your AVR.
