hello,
i can understand that HEPA filter is important but may i ask how important is active carbon filter?

i read around that it removes odor and also serve as a deodorant kind of filter but does it help improve the air quality other than just the smell?

Hi Ozak,
i am interested in Sharp FPE50E while it state it has a deodorizing filter, it didn't state if its a Active Carbon Filter. I found out that Carbon Filter also help remove VOCs, does a normal deodorizing filter does the same?

my simple review on Sharp Air Purifier FPE50E. dated use: 09.10.2014

due to the recent bad haze that seems to come and go like the four seasons. decided to get an air purifier to put in bedroom to improve quality of sleep and rest, and therefore improving health and fitness too.

was reading & researching around and found that my criteria in an air purifier is:
1) HEPA Filter
- generally remove bacteria and viruses.
2) Active Carbon
- generally remove bad small and Volatile Organic Compound (VoCs)
3) Dust / Odour Indicator
- at least you know when its dirty.

my budget was less than rm1,000 and there are some really nice ones in the market but the price is just beyond reach. i kind of like Samsung design, Sharp higher end design also look quite nice. goggled around and there seem to be some quite good review about Sharp Air Purifier.

i don't need a humidifier so that puts their F-series range of products for me which most of their price tag is below 1k except maybe FUA80E.

among all of them, i was quite interested in the FPE05E as it fits my budget, my room size is 25 square meter, 5 years filter sounds good and comes with odour & dust sensor. while the cheaper FUZ31E and FUA28E are prices around rm500 and rm250 respectively, their filters listed is only 2 years and lack of sensor for me, plus the area filtered is below what i need. so i got the Sharp Air Purifier FPE05E for rm9xx from a lowyat forumer named Edwin8373, he is reliable and responsibly, and this is my first time dealing with him as well.

i won't go through all the specs with you but this is more of my experience of using the Sharp Air Purifier FPE05E.

the unit is not too big but like a laundry basket, maybe smaller a bit but looks slim, which is good enough to place inside the room without too obstructing. taking out from the box reveal a nicely package unit and opening the back reveals the filter are in tightly sealed plastic. once open and install all the filter and ready to test the unit. my room is around the size of 21ft x 13ft and i placed the FPE05E near the middle and around 10ft away from where i sleep. i find it funny that the air outlet is on top and facing the back?!? this makes positioning a bit hard as you don't really want to put the air outlet facing a wall where it for sure will leave a black mark in due time. they could really have make it adjustable or a front air outlet. they also provided a small space on the left for you to write down when the unit started running so you can keep track of the filter.

user posted image

powering up the unit and it looks good. nice color design on control panel.

the speed can be set to any five settings which is auto, pollen, slow, med, and high. i find that the me and high is a bit too noisy for sleep but the slow setting is just nice. at night i set it to slow because its barely audible. the high fan speed setting is used when i decided to clean the room for two hours while no one is in it. being able to dim the lights on the air purifier makes it a nice simple touch. it can serve as a night light if you have children.

user posted image

i like the fact that
- there is timer for 2hr, 4hr, and 8hr.
- the light illumination for the control panel can be set to normal, dim, and off.
- and a child lock too if necessary.

i sleep at night with aircon, after using the Sharp Air Purifier FPE50E for a few days now, waking up feeling fresh despite some nights having a lack of sleep. which shows how important the air quality in my bedroom is when sleeping. i could smell the plasmacluster/ions but i could not discern it that how does this smell is relate anything to being in forest or nature, my other family members seem to disagree with me. however they do agree with me that the air feels lighter, easier to breath in as i did move the air purifier into the living room for movie nights & i set to medium fan speed which is not that audible with the TV on. ya... the unit is light and comes with handle on sides so easy to move around.

pretty satisfied with this unit at the moment.

currently,
i found other place selling this model at this time for this prices:
Seng Heng Electrical - RM949
House of Air Clearners - RM999

update 15.10.2014
i love the freshness in the room nowdays, i switch it on an hour or two before i go to sleep or even taking an hour or two nap on holidays and weekends. last time i used to use fan to take nap and waking up the room would feel slight warm and thick air, now no more and while nap with ceiling fan, i switch the fan speed to medium.

though i seem to notice that the air tend to be a bit dry while using the air purifier. this was noticeable when waking up. i remedy this by putting a bowl or a glass of water which seem to alleviate the dryness.

u on the air filter whole night while sleeping or u set the timer for 6 or 4 hrs ?

at first three weeks, i set it running for the whole night. after that, i set it to mostly 4hrs. the 8hrs would have no difference from whole night.

for me, 10-15 feet from where i sleep is the best. i don't put near the window, my main idea was to "refresh" the air inside the room and not so much on filtering the air outside.

this is because i switch on the aircon to sleep and somewhere during the morning, the air outside can many times smell like ashes so i am not so keen to open my windows to sleep.

i hope you find the air purifier helpful. biggrin.gif

btw does sharp air purifier can suck dust? because i've dust prob inside my house, look like i need to clean everyday.
*
i a not sure about other models, but mine definitely does cost after a month, i have to clean the outer mesh which sizable dust accumulated. the more finer dust will stuck inside. i use it as a fan and air filter, so its like running at least 12hrs a day in my bedroom.

M a total newbie when it comes to air purifier so do bear wit me please 😊. I really been having a super hard time getting my tiny brain around this 😊

The reason one seems to get an air purifier is because it's rumored that the indoor air quality is poor. Please correct me if this is incorrect

1) So if you keep all your windows open - does this still remain true? If yes, how so?
a good house ventilation would improve indoor air quality BUT considering how bad malaysia air quality is... i think you just look at the haze and acrid smell in the morning can know already.

2) How bad truely is our indoor air quality n how is this being measured? Is there any strong scientific evidence for the Malaysian environment? Or is there a official organization that this question can be asked to?
i think are devices to measure air quality even for indoor but if you stay in that house long enough, i think the dust, odor, stuffiness, thickness in the air inside can be felt though the breathing.

3) If we spend almost an equal amount of time indoor and outdoor - does having an air purifier make any difference?
yes, your lungs also serve as a filter. so while indoors having better air quality will help your lungs.

4) If one gets used to the apparently clean air from the purifier does this mean that one is more likely to get ill when they breath less cleaner air?
no.

5) For an air purifier to work properly must it be turned on in a room where all doors n windows are closed? N meaning turning on the aircon or ventilation devices hence higher bill?
to work efficiently yes, if outdoor air is dirty, your air purifier will be trying to purify the air while the indoor air is being replace with outdoor air every time there is wind. if outdoor air is clean then i guess it would be alright but its haze these days.

you can also use it in a closed room with/without aircond or ventilation fan, which some actually recommended. the air purifier will help to filter VOC , dust , and particles.

6) If you run a purifier in a room that's has all its doors n windows open is it straining it's capacity? Like running an aircon wit the doors n windows open
yes. almost the same concept.

7) If you have a ventilation fan running, does this hinder the effectiveness of the purifier?
depending on airflow of the house. generally speaking, it should not affect that much.

8) Does one need to have a purifier in every room of the house to get its apparent full benefit? This does sound like an -expensive purchase & a space stealer.
for budget thinking, like me, i use one in bedroom for night time and during daytime i move it to the living room.

9) How much energy does an avg Purifier consume?
check the brand specifications on power usage

Just want a quick confirmation from the sifus.

I want an air purifier which will also help with the doggie smell in the house. The guy in the shop said needed to get the ones with charcoal filters which are double the price of the basic models. Looking at Sharp and Panasonic brands.

Is that true? I tried google already can't get an answer.

Thanks in advance.
*
Carbon Filter is good enough. i tried one time in the toilet before. effectively remove stinking smell.

Hi all sifu,

just want to know now that aircon today already have air purifier, should we install another air purifier? did the aircon air purifier able to perform as good as an independent air purifier?
*
hello.
can you share which aircon model?

usually better to have it as an independent item to purify the air. then you don't need yo switch on the aircon whenever you feel like the need to purify the air.

Hi,

There's this Sharp entry level range (RM500+ or RM300+ on Lazada) air purifier.

Was told by salesman that its only good for a small/medium sized room.

If I still use it for living room, relatively big but apartment Size (300+ sqft), will it defeats its purpose? Like couldn't cover that big of space?

I've never used air purifier before so I'd like to try but with affordable one, and I have a baby now and about 500m away there's a huge house development ongoing for at least a year more, I thought I might need to invest abit on this should the air quality contaminated by construction dust. (although I live on 5th floor, dono will affect or not)
*
any air purifier will definitely help. as itself with the most basic of basic will act like a dust filter. like a slow vacuum cleaner.
construction dust are dangerous. they also have chemical dust. 5th floor will be affected when its carried by the wind. also, you walk through the ground floor everyday, in/out, you will carry external contaminants.

i agree with you, try a affordable one first.

one of the best way till construction complete is, get air purifier, buy NASA top recommend three plants for internal air circulation, and don't open windows except on rainy or windy days from other direction. the hardest to die and most easy to maintain is "money plant", soil based or water based also can.

My room suffers the same condition as your unit. I bought a Sharp FPE50EW Air Purifier, after 2 weeks of leaving it on 24/7, now I don't see those tiny dust particles floating anywhere.
*
same thing, my FPE50EW also act as a dust collector. the only thing is why the air intake is design at the back and air outlet is also the same direction, which is at the back.
πŸ˜…

i switch it around 4 to 8 hours a day. the air definitely feels lighter in comparison if for days i forgot to switch it on.

kan. i think the design a bit dumb hahah. but unless its some special air circulation thing we dont understand LOL.
*
you should tried like fart five feet away hahahaha...
it will tells you how many seconds it took the airflow to reach the air purifier when the "odor" changes color to yellow.

but regarding the design, i think its a bit dumb also. it could place nicely like behind a sofa in the middle of a room so the controls and indicator is facing back and air outlet is propel to the sofa but other than that, putting it near walls or corners, i feel it will limit the airflow because air inlet and air outlet is same direction and i think nobody will want the back facing them if put in corners, where the controls and indicators will be somewhat a bit troublesome to reach.

hi all, i need to get an air purifier urgently, need to get rid of formaldehyde due to lot of new furniture in my house.

most deodorizing with activated carbon can do the job ?
*
most air purifier with carbon filter can do the job already so you don't need to break the bank looking for one. however, an air purifier with odor light indicator will be helpful.

on similar topic,
also try getting two to three snake plant about 5 inches tall each will work wonders too, works well with air purifier.

why not have windows open or exhaust fan?
*
this is also a good way to circulate the air inside the house, remove stagnant air and possible chance to get black mold inside the house.

but as we all know, we live in malaysia which is prone to half year dry season and during that time, haze will make a comeback and grey the hills on the horizon, which you won't want to open your windows. while air purifier is good at removing bad particles, certain plants will generate oxygen for inside the house.

the one downside about plants is you have to regularly clean the leaves as dust will gather on its leaves, its like a dust filter.

NASA label certain plants as excellent air purifier, Spider Plant, Snake Plant, and Money Plant as three "hard to kill" greens.

put them together with air purifier πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Does khind hap40 you guys talking about meets my purpose or any other brand/model I should look into?

at that budget and i would recommend one with HEPA, have a look at Mi Air Purifier at rm499. There is some good reviews about it.

yes it does. the air will feel a tad lighter and once you clean the filters on the air purifier, you will notice the dust accumulated,

but best you identified where is all the dust comes from, like open windows facing construction site or etc.
