We have a 64GB iPad 2 (WiFi + 3G) but never had any SIM card on it.

Can anyone recommend me which prepaid (or postpaid) 3G plan should I subscribe to? Some say Maxis, others say DiGi. I know Celcom is expensive but my colleague recommend uMobile. Has there any study been done on which package is more cost-saving / worth it?

Just want to know the advantages and disadvantages of each carrier and plans, as well as prepaid and postpaid.

Which location u're in? KL or other state??
I used DiGi for 1 weeks and throw it off, sucks to core. Now using Umobile postpaid, overnight can download 30 series of movies(imagine that). Celcom nowadys i'm not sure, but if using uMobile, when no line it will auto roam to Celcom at no charges. only RM28/month. Free 30 sms and dunno how many hundred minutes talktime(i din use it coz its in my ipad). Digi prepaid rm1/day ONLY if u topped up RM100! uMobile RM28 +6% Gov Charges. U do the math.

Recommended go for postpaid than prepaid coz prepaid u nit to poke out the sim card everytime u nit to reload, no such thing as auto reload from shop after paid money.

Prepaid also got, postpaid also got. But postpaid need to pay extra 6% Gov Charges. The data cap on 500 Mb and speed reduce after that without disable 3G or extra charges. So for iPad, fix at RM28/month+6% Gov Charges. I open my line at Time Square UMobile booth smile.gif prepaid need to remove sim card every time u reload, postpaid no need smile.gif

Wow.. Didn't know uMobile got such interesting offer... I will definitely check it out. When you're throttled, how slow is it?

You said download 30 movies but then 500mb? How is this possible? I thought of Yea 4G but do not wish to carry another device around. Will definitely check out uMobile.

Any website comparing these packages?

I'm just a small time user. I always use wifi at home and only need data plan when I bring out my iPad which I hardly do considering I'm working at day time and a mother in the evening. I want the lowest commitment possible.

Well, since u asked something that even myself found interesting, i would try to answer u here biggrin.gif uMobile, how slow?? i dun get wat u mean coz from my personal experience, it load youtube high quality video faster than my sister's house wifi, unifi cannot compare of coz. the cap is 500mb but anyhow my gf managed to dl 30 series overnight, and she dun have any wifi in that house or free access nearby. So far haven't experience any speed reduction which was said to be capped at 500MB. This the best part. I think better u pay a visit to uMobile at Time Square, they will show u all the packages available and tell u about the suitability with ur lifestyle. Also, they wil tell u what kinda hidden charges would applied, like the 6% Gov Charges which u have to ask or else they jst wont tell u until ur bill come end of the month. biggrin.gif

Finding a 3G is very dependend on your area, coz some area are more congested while others might have smoother traffic so the line is faster. Good luck looking for a suitable 3G biggrin.gif I found mine.. biggrin.gif

Get a maxis internet prepaid kit, you can choose to buy online package from RM2 for 1 hour(100mb), RM8 for 1 day(500mb) etc.
When you first open up your safari,it will bring you to a broadband portal for you to choose the package and also have reload site for you to key in the reload. The thing i like about this prepaid kit is that after your package reach the limit, it will not deduct the credit from your prepaid, it will just bring you back to the broadband portal for you to re subscribe a new package.

And for those of you who jailbroken your device, there's a tool in Cydia call ‘Querry USSD’ where you can use it to send USSD command such as *100# or *122# (for maxis) to your operator for reload or check your balance.

Hi eikozai,

I was told that uMobile are riding on Celcom coverage and has coverage most places. Not sure how true this is. I dont Unifi at home, still with Streamyx and it is still slow sometimes so uMobile is a good alternative for me because I dont really use 3G much, except when I take my iPad with me when travelling.

I will definitely check out uMobile store.

I dont want to reload regularly, I want to pay as less as possible. RM8 for 1 day is very expensive IMHO. I seldom use 3G.

Curious, this prepaid kit got expiry like on the phone? Like if I reload RM2 for 1 hour, if I only use 10MB, my 90MB is balance or burnout?

You are right, i was told by the CS that uMobile doesn't have their own base, so need to ride on other company's platform. But in Klang Valley, u can see on ur ipad it'll show uMobile 3G, and it roam to Celcom 3G when uMobile 3G have no coverage. Celcom is good when go out from Klang Valley, while uMobile stram extremely well within Klang Valley. So this is my best choice for ipad dataplan. Personally choosen postpaid because seldom use doesn't mean not using at all. Me myself dun want all the trouble when wanna go online, have to drive all the way to a specific store to purcahse the card, or etc etc, lots of factor, prefer on-the-go type. uMobile postpaid was slightly cheaper than DiGi if u do the calculation, rm28/month + 6% = RM29.68 for 30 days(they told me 1 month = 30days), almost same like DiGi prepaid RM1/day plan which also will continously deduct ur credit everyday no matter u using or not. RM1/day was only applicable IF ONLY you topped up RM100, RM30, RM50 don't count with this rate biggrin.gif uMobile plan no contract, can terminate anytime biggrin.gif

I'm not bias, but just sharing my personaly opnion and experience. You can do the survey around first, or try and throw sim card like me biggrin.gif

I am also a small time user. I went for DiGi postpaid 30MB plan for RM30 a month. Put it on auto billing discount RM5.
So I am paying RM25 a month. Did not go over my quota at all since I only use that when I am outside the home.

30MB is too little for me because we do bring the iPad out on the weekends to do some Facebook, YouTube, Web-surfing, etc. I think 500MB is about right for me. You know, sometimes you noticed a funny video on Facebook and want to watch it while you're out? 30MB makes me have to be very jimat and concern if I've overused for the month.

In this case you can activate the hotlink 360 for RM30 so that you credit will stay active for a year.

I have tried Digi Discovery Day, uMobile prepaid, and Hotlink (iPad Plan 30)

Among the three, I think Hotlink/Maxis has the best speed in general but it is quite expensive. If money is no object, then go for Hotlink/Maxis. Hotlink is also good in the sense that you do not have to remove the simcard to top up. Topping up and purchasing of data plan can be done through the mylaunchpad page. Very convenient. Speeds that I have got are arounf 2-3Mbps with ping values ranging from 60+ to 200+ ms. Pretty good IMO.

Digi is very slow in my opinion. Max speed I managed to get (tested using speedtest app) is around 0.98Mbps. And if you are using Discovery Day, the speeds from 7pm to 7am is almost unsuable. But this plan is cheap (RM30+ only) and I feel is is suitable for those who only want to use data plan during the day for checking email, light browsing, facebook, twitter, etc.

uMobile (both prepaid and post paid) has the best RM to speed & data cap ratio IMO (@ around RM48 for 2-3Mbps and 3GB monthly quota). The problem that I have encountered with uMobile is that the ping can be REALLY bad. I have gotten ping values of 5000+ ms (basically thats 5+ sec!!). This does not really affect casual browsing, but would be bad for online multiplayer gaming. If you confirm you want to use uMobile, I recommending using the postpaid to avoid the hassle of having to remove the simcard to reload every month.

*please note that another thing (probably the most important thing) that you need to consider is the coverage. If there is no reception in the places that you need to use you data plan, then it is pretty pointless. I recommend getting a prepaid card to try out the reception and data speeds first. If you are not satisfied, try another service provider. And when you are satisfied, go signup for postpaid.

hope this helps

Teelim,

Thanks for sharing your experience with all 3. This is very valuable information for me. I was first interested in the MAxis RM70 per month for iPad but then now considering a even cheaper package. My current interest is uMobile u28. I will buy a SIM card to try it out first in my area before signing up for the postpaid.

Its a no contract but they will still bill you for as long as you did not terminate. So watch out on this. Make sure that you terminate immediately if you don't need them, else you will be slapped with a few months bill even though they bar your usage for not paying previous bill. They barred and then ask you to pay for usage that you cannot use. This goes to all the so-call no contract account of all telcos and providers.

My suggestion is get a pre-paid and suck up on the hassle of removing the sim card to top-up cause it only takes you 3 minutes tops to do this and only once a month or once every 2 months if you top up 60 everytime.
