guys, i desperately need ur help

few days ago, there was a thunderstorm and it happened to fried both my computers' ethernet port, both my computer was on (was switched off before i went out, powered up by lightning, is this even possible?) both had errors.

okay after i restarted it, everything was fine except the ethernet ports. none were detected (device manager doesnt show)

my question is,

1. how to check if other hardware is affected?

2. i do not want to wait until something fails only to find out about it =(

Additional info,

1. my computer is fairly new (less than 6 months) and it's under warranty, the motherboard's ethernet port is screwed (i probably change the motherboard with warranty)

2. no burnt smell that i notice of. ( i assume the lightning goes in thru the router and reach my computer, but my modem is fine - using unifi, fibre optics can get zapped? )

Strike by lighting, i bet 90% chance that it cant be warranty(most warranty sure exclude burn and lightning). Another 10% is you somehow to "tipu" them that it is like that, not by lightning.

well if im not mistaken..fibre optic do not conduct electricity.. hmm.gif
and i dont think the lightning strike would suddenly switch on ur computer impossible..unless the pc wasnt properly shutdown?..
the power would fry the modem before it could reach ur pc..

anyway..try check ur modem first..but since u use optic cable...i dont think ur modem is fried..but just double check..

it won't install the driver..

okay.. let me put this clearly again.

On my first pc, the Ethernet port is connected to the motherboard (onboard ethernet port) the light is still on when I plug out the cable. (i'm not sure if the light should always be on or not) so, i'm assuming the port is spoilt since the light should be off once you remove the cable? windows error msg shows please install driver if you have a network adapter (windows 7) - but cannot install cause cannot detect under device manager - if the port is onboard port can it be detected under device manager under network adapters?

On my second pc, the Ethernet port is a separate card connected to the motherboard (RM50) and doesn't light up even after I plug in the cable. (Card can be detected under device manager and it says device is working properly)

On my modem currently, there is no light on all 4 Ethernet ports. Other than that, all wireless devices are working

I'm probably suspecting the port on my first pc is spoilt and the modem is probably faulty also on the Ethernet cable side.

update : i noticed my first pc's lan port has 2 lights (1 is off, the other is on, yellow colour)
motherboard model is P67A-UD3-B3

guys.. i trouble shoot already..

there are 4 ports on the dir 615 modem. 2 of them are fried, which the same 2 connected to my both comps killed the ethernet port

guess need to call tmnet to change the modem, as well as claim the giga motherboard warranty..

gonna think of surge protector next..

i tested it with a brand new router..

ligthning still fry your hardware, the most safest way, unplug all wire connected, the power cable, the RJ-45 that connected to your PCs, the RJ-11 (Streamyx) that connected to modem. i'm not sure about Unifi though, as i don't have Unifi. but still, same concept applied to it. unplug it all.

about warranty, just send them to warranty, say that you don't know anything after switch it on. settle. that works everytime. i mean, how the hell do we know we got strike by lightning right? be really n00b in this matter, HAHAHA

Just send it to WARRANTY if it doesn't have any physical damage which is visible on the Motherboard like burn marks, bended, black stain, etc. But, don't tell it's died to due lightning strike. Just tell them, it's malfunction all in a sudden.

I'd encountered this problem before. My Ethernet Port died due to lightning strike, I sent the Motherboard to warranty and I've a fixed Motherboard back weeks later.

Lightning loves Ethernet Port.
Next time, use a USB WiFi Adapter.

if only the wifi is reliable good as LAN connection, i mean for gaming purposes, Wifi would do any better?

depends on your range and receiver efficiency
but really have no problem playing battlefield 3 with RM69 Wifi Receiver
rubberbanding kept at minimum only due to other user online or server itself
