not reallyu can just buy wow vanilla first than play til your lvl cap which is 60
then buy the expansion, play til lvl cap 60+
repeat til u have cataclysm
just mind that each expansions have their own new features that wont be available/playable until u buy it. example in cataclysm u can fly in capital city, u cant in other exp
