oh yeah boss, show them how it done biggrin.gif

good win on the weekend, although admittedly Wigan was piss poor (up to the point where i feel bad for them as the commentator keep on kutuk them for every single thing that they did)but you can only beat what in front of you. watching it with my family members who are all but 1 Gooners make it all the more wonderful weekend for me. now on to the CL match tonight, and i'm quite sure there'll be a live coverage for us this time around. will have to confirm on that though

i saw some comments (particularly from Angel of Deth and 1 more Gooner i could not recall his/her nick here. apology for that) about criticism thrown at the boss re:his handling of our GK position i.e. not buying Shay Given as our #1 these past seasons etc were plain wrong due to the performance of Wojciech currently. and asking where were allthe doubters now. well, i was among the loudest critics of the boss in this particular issue, and i cannot help it but feel that those posts and comments were directed at me. I am always here when time and situation permit me to do so, so no worries on the question where are all the doubters now. let me ask you guys this :

How is Wojciech performances now justify the 3 seasons (was it 4? sure feels like forever though) we have to tahan with Manual Almunia as our #1 and not buying better GK (i.e.Shay Given) to replace him all those seasons?

You're one of the loudest but at least you give your reason and willing to be rebutted. If i remember correctly you're the one who suggest that there should be a poll whether Wenger should be sacked or no.
There were plenty of users (here & outside) who seems like completely given up on this team and the boss and ready to abandon ship early of the season. At that time, it seems like every decision that Wenger made was all wrong in their eyes. Remember Oxlade? Jenkinson? Walcott? RVP? Song? Koscielny? Wenger and his team were criticized harshly non-stop. Now, i can't help myself to return the favour since i'm one of Wenger supporter at that time. For me it's fair, but i don't think i'm being too critical on Arsene Wenger doubters. I'm not reaching that level yet.

About Shay Given, there were some nice article posted by StarGhazzer about Arsenal GKs before. I agree little bit of view with the writer but i disagree strongly when he try to suggest that Wojciech, Lukas and Almunia share similar ability judging from the stats. For me, not everything can be transpire into stat.
But of course, the article maybe not really accurate. I'm just glad that Arsenal opted not to sign Given because considering the circumstances at that time. He was hardly play for City during his last season with them, surely his form must be dipped. And he doesn't command his box well. He's not the same Given 2 - 5 years ago. Thus, i don't think he will make much difference than Almunia. Some people predict him to become buy of the season; which eventually not quite happen. Maybe that's why Wenger preferred Schwarzer. To think back, if Arsene did sign another GK, Wojciech might already left the team. Just like Håvard Nordtveit.

fair enough if you think Shay Given will not do any better than Manuel Almunia during those horrible seasons having him as our #1. that will explain your comments. i, on the other hand think that Shay Given (even at that time) will be massive improvement on Manuel Almunia, subsequently also will improving massively our chances for the trophies. an able, confidence GK breeds confidence in his defenders, and then the team as a whole. even an Arsenal legend that is Martin Keown said this. in addition to that, i think Star Ghazzer was the 1 who strongly said last time that our problem in the defense will not be solved by having new defenders or GK, but more to do with organization of it. an opinion which i agreed with, but i still think having an able GK in the mould of Shay Given will improve our defensive side of game greatly so i disagree with keeping Manuel as our #1 for so many seasons (oh the horror scences started coming back to my mind now sweat.gif )

but i will have to disagree with you on your last point. i think if Wojciech is good enough, he will be our #1 regardless of who we bring it. and i like that, competition. it brings the best out of the players. who to say if Wojciech left us if we buy ready made replacement for Manuel he will still be the player he is today?

and yeah, i was the one who suggested we have the poll. was there anything wrong with that? looking back at the situation at that time, it just seems to be logical things to do

Nothing wrong with your poll suggestion. That's just a testament when you said that you're one of loudest critics. I also think that one of Almunia biggest weakness is he doesn't organize his defense well (and also very suspect when handling long ball & cross). Actually, like many of you i also already lost faith in Almunia after his horror performance especially that WBA match. But as i said before i don't think Given is that good replacement, maybe for short-term but it will not solve Arsenal GK problem.

It was blessing in disguise when Almunia start to perform poor + Fabianski injury + Wenger stubbornness, Wojciech Szczesny came out of nowhere and seems like the right solution for the GK position. He still have to word hard to proved himself. I remember he make a statement last year that he's gonna consider his option in January because of lack first team action, if i'm not mistaken he hinted that he shouldn't be third choice behind Almunia and Fabianski because he think he's better than them, before Arsene Wenger persuade him to stay. When i look at Bundesliga, Håvard Nordtveit did really well for Borussia Mönchengladbach. He's their starter which is something that he never have chance during his Arsenal days. Arsene wanted to keep him, but Nordtveit insist that he need to play regularly. I'm just glad that Szczesny situation didn't turn similar to Nordveit's.

sure, i also agree that our long standing defensive problem was (hopefully it is in the past now) due to defensive organization rather than the defenders individual abilities. however, i'd rather we bring in someone new than not doing anything to address the problem at all; which seems to be what we were doing at that point of time since we keep on having the same problems over and over again and cost us valuable points season after season. so it was pretty simple for me, bring in Shay Given as the new GK > not doing anything to address the problem. but as i said, hopefully it is all irrelevant now that we have a very good young and confidence GK as our #1 which breeds confidence to his defenders

i will have to disagree with you on the 'Wojciech coming out of nowhere' comment. he was long tipped to be our #1 eventually, it just a question of when rather than if with him. he has that kind of aura you see with Jack, our ex #4 and i saw it early this season with Benik. even the boss was suggesting England to call him up before Poland did to solve their GK problem; pre-Joe Hart times (do correct me if i'm wrong here though, can seems to find any article about it now). so for me the boss did not bring any replacement for the GK position to (in his wording style) not kill the progress of Wojciech. he must have thought that Manuel can do decent enough job until Wojciech is ready. oh how wrong he was cry.gif

and on the poll thingy, i did mention last time the reason i requested for the poll i.e. i was losing believe in the boss and would like to see if anybody's point of view can make my believe to the boss grow stronger again. and of course, i was sick and tired of people posting 1-liner comment to either

bash the boss, ask him to resign

or

defend the boss, bash the pro 'sack Arsene' camp

without really giving reasons and proper comments. so at least (i thought la) with poll people will be more inclined to put forward more constructive comments as to why they chosen any option

The Emirates Cup, Arsenal’s traditional pre-season curtain-raiser, will not take place next year due to the London 2012 Olympics.

Although the Emirates Stadium has not been selected as one of the six venues to host the Games’ football, the logistics of organising the tournament during the two-week Olympic window have been deemed unworkable.

A statement by Ivan Gazidis underlines the reason for the decision:

“Although we are disappointed that we cannot stage the Emirates Cup in 2012, we completely understand and accept the situation.

“Over 100,000 people have attended the Emirates Cup each year since we introduced the competition in 2007, and this would have only added to the demands on London’s infrastructure during the Olympics. Of course, we would have preferred the Emirates Cup to have been staged in 2012, but we completely respect the situation and like everyone, are fully supportive of, and looking forward to a successful London 2012 Olympic Games.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will take the tournament on the road next year to help fill the financial void, although the club have confirmed that it will return ahead of the 2013/14 season.

“We are already planning ahead to bring three high profile clubs to Emirates Stadium for 2013.

“After the success of our Far East tour in July 2011, we are looking at a number of options. The calendar is complex but we hope to be able to confirm our plans soon.”

Arsene Wenger will no doubt be stocking up on Neurofen as next summer approaches. Many of his squad will likely spend the summer in Ukraine and Poland on international duty at Euro 2012, while others have been pinpointed as possible candidates for their respective Olympic football teams.

He should be rested and put Mertesacker instead.
