Hi all.

I intend to adopt cat [or kitten], as I am of the opinion that it is more economical than to buy it from the pet store.

Can anyone suggest the adoption centre around Selangor/Kuala Lumpur area?

sry, pls allow me to comment a bit on the word 'economical'.
we adopt cos we want to give a home/a chance to live for those poor stray cats, not 'economical'. you gotta get the mindset right. Adopt will also stop the unethical 'kitty'mill activities.

For my case, it it not 'economical'. I spent quite a lump sum of $$ to treat my 2 kittens for the sickness they suffered when they were stray & got from the rescue centre/animal shelter. (malnutrition, earmites, ringworm, diarrhoea & flu)
I believe the $$ I spent on them for the med & food I could hv just buy a kitten from the pet shop.
They may not be as beautiful as those selling in the pet shop but with all the effort & TLC I put in for them, they are my sweethearts.

Just giving you a headsup  smile.gif

Hi there,
Many thanks for the constructive criticisms.

Please allow me to elaborate more on what I meant.

I concur that the reason to adopt is because we want to give a home i.e. having new family members.

When I meant economical, I mean it in the sense that it makes more logical sense to spend the money on taking care of the cat, as opposed to paying the pet store, and ending up having less for the cats.

To put it in monetary terms;

Adoption cost (let's say from PAWS/SPCA) : RM100 (including vaccinations and such)
Paying for a cuddly cat put on display at the pet store : RM1,400++

From the get-go, paying from the pet store would set the buyer RM1,300 less than adopting.
Which in turn means less to care for the cat.

It may mean that the cat may get substandard food/toys.

^ That was I meant.

In no way did I imply that I plan to get cat because it is economical per se.

hello fellow feline-crazy people biggrin.gif

I have a new family member; which is.... a female cat!

Alright, I have heaps of questions to ask, and I am kinda feeling a bit overwhelmed [it feels like i am having a newborn baby, lol].

My cat is of unknown breed, age around 4months. Female.

Now, my biggest concern now is that my cat doesn't seem to be drinking enough fluid. Any idea why?

I placed the drinking bowl in the cage, next to her food bowl and litter container. She is free to roam the house, and she knows to find her way to these places, should she wants to eat, poo.

But, the liquid [which is normal water, taken from the tap], she doesn't drink it. We left the house in the morning, and return at night, and noticed that the water level has not dropped.

I am concern. Any advise ?

^ Thx for the replies smile.gif

I have put the water bowl farther from the litter box n food.
But it seems that she is still not drinking fluid.

I am using tap water, and am lokking at whether boiled water would make her start drinking again.

I am curious to know my cat's breed.
Can the vet determine it for me?

If yes, roughly what is the rate charged?

Most likely just a domestic shorthair, medium hair or long hair depending on fur length. You will probably have to run a DNA test, which can be expensive.

So the vet's only going to do visual check on the cat, and determine the breed?

Hi all!

Alright I'm a total no0b when it comes to cat.

Here's the thing. I adopted a kitten from a friend, and she is 3+ months old.

She used to be v calm and passive. She slept on my lap right after I cuddled her. How bout dat!

So we brought her home. She is playful, yet calm (as opposed to being aggressive).

However, things started to change after a few days. She is always meowing whenever we put her in her cage! And when we let her roam the living area, she gets very playful, which borders to aggresiveness. She claws on anything she could find, she runs around d living area like Mo Farah, and she starts to claw and bite our legs!

And funnily enough, for a cat that playful, she doesnt seem tired at all! We have never seen her sleep! At times, we came downstaira to check on her, and she coyly turn to us and started chasing us!

Is it for kittens to behave like this? And will she grow out of it, and be more 'mature'? lol.

Truth be told, I was always scared of cats; I usually whisk them off when ever they come close (or I oeave the area, lol). So having noted her change of attitude kinda worries me.

Any advise?

^ Many thanks for the answer, @kizwan!

Phew I am glad to note that this behavior is normal. I like her this way, really. But I am just a little taken aback by the change in behvlavior. I thought that he's dirasuk jin! lol.

We tried to play with her whenever we could. But she doeant seem to be tired at all! Any way to make her more calm / make her tired? We gave her scratching pads, big area to play, and toys.

I'm thinking out loud; would caging her make her grow tired easier or set her free to roam the area?

^ I think so too! And since she knows where to poop and pee, I dun mind her to roam free. After all, my living area is bare, and hardly used! It is when we adopt her that we spend more time downstairs.

I plan to spay her a few months later,
as she is only 3-month old now.

On a separate question, I am now only feeding her dry food. No wet food (only on 1 occasion, when it is who are curious to know the diff, lol). Is it okay? Or do I need to feed her wet food too for a balance diet?

If it's good quality dry food, it should be ok to feed her dry food. Make sure she have access to clean drinking water all the time. I have cats that I feeds only dry food & also cats that I feeds both dry & wet food. Maybe you can try feed her wet food from time to time.

I am feeding my cat Blackwood kitten. Is it considered as good quality dry food?

Yes, my cat has access to clean drinking water at all times. However, most of the time, I would need to coax her to drink, else she will not drink sweat.gif

On a separate question, is it okay to put catnip into the water bowl?

Alright, with the cost of living and the GST looming around the corner,
I am thinking to mix my cat diet between BW, and a lower range cat food.

Can anyone suggest which is the best options amongst these brands : Whiskas, Friskies, SmartHeart, proDiet

Today my cat vomitted 2 times after I feed him Whiskas Mackerel (dry and wet) both.. He vomit all out.. Is it serious? Need to visit vet? Is it recommended to feed again? Scared he hungry..

I'm not an expert on this but try change food first. If your cat still vomiting after changing the food, bring your cat to vet. If there is blood in vomit, bring your cat to vet asap.

You can read this article, might be useful.

Thanks for suggestion.. luckily no blood.. he literally vomit out all the food he consumed.. shall try out Blackwood brand

Hmm what food do you usually give your feline? i.e. before you switched to Whiskas Mackerel ?
I think it could be due to a sudden change in the cat's diet. Any change in the cat's diet would need to be done gradually.

perhaps you may want to fed your feline the usual diet, and mix it with the new diet.

Just my two cents.

As far as I know of, Whiskas and Friskies are not recommended..

Anyway I shall quote :

I've never heard of the last two, but I personally would not touch Whiskas or Friskies. Those are considered to be the "mcdonald's" of cat food. if you wouldn't eat mcdonald's every day, why would you feed your cat that? smile.gif

QUOTE(miaopurr @ Dec 30 2014, 09:02 AM)
try proformance or starpro instead of whiskas/friskies/smartheart/prodiet

u can trying mixing the brands with bw, but if they vomit, then stop. stick to one brand only at a time.

Thanks for the replies biggrin.gif
It is certainly heartwarming to have others who are helpful,
it makes the task of caring for my feline easier.

I concur with the notion that what's matter is the ingredients, rather than the brand.

So I make it my point to check on the ingredients.

I have checked and noticed that both Whiskas and Friskies contain by-products.
ProDiet, on the other hands, do not. However, it contains rice and corn.

Link to the product : http://www.prodiet.com.my/products/Kitten#tabs-2

I am now mixing it with the BW balance that I have, and will switched fully to ProDiet soonest.
For one, ProDiet is available at most major stores (yeah, yeah, so that makes it commercial), so it is convenient to purchase. Else my cat would be starving biggrin.gif

I also give her access to water, and wet food (Morge) to supplement her diet.
And exercise too, we enjoy the time we spent playing with her.

Thanks for the notion on proformance or starpro, but then, I can't quite find it in outlets, and the specialty pet shops also v hard to find.

I would avoid byproducts as well smile.gif
You want real protein.

Hence the reason why I am refraining from Whiskas and Friskies.
But then, ProDiet contains rice (not brown rice) and corn, so is not so good too sweat.gif

I plan to send my cat for grooming soon.

However, I would like to know further;

The term itself, what does it entails ?

e.g. bathing, nail cutting? Anything else?
