Just would like to share quotes from Jesse Dallas, author of "Pets Need Wholesome Food Also" and "What's New PussyCat" plus a link regarding wholesome homemade pet food;

"If you really apply some common sense analysis of commercial pet foods, then you are going to begin to notice that in many ways, commercial pet foods are not healthy for our pets and are in fact, no different than fast food diets for humans. Commercial pet foods are killing our pets. I know that some will find this to be a harsh statement, but for those that have suffered the pain of a sick pet, then this statement is anything but harsh and in fact, can be more of an understatement."

~=~

"Feeding a wholesome raw meat diet makes sense to me because I prefer not to focus on the word raw but rather on the word wholesome. Nobody can deny that our pets, just as we humans, need wholesome foods for good health. For some, they will think that commercial pet foods constitute a wholesome diet and that's fair enough. To each their own. But for myself (and hopefully for you too), if we meditate on what constitutes a wholesome diet then our thoughts should lead us to a diet that most closely imitates and resembles what Mother Nature herself would feed."

~=~

"Sad to say, some people just see a pet as a pet and not as living being that requires wholesome foods. It's always difficult for those of us that realize that, as pet guardians, we have a responsibility to treat our pets with love in every way including the food we feed them. I am often asked how can we change those that feed unhealthy pet foods? I always tell people that we should not try to change or convince others, but rather we should be a shining example. When you shine bright your light will eventually guide others too."

~=~

"Hopefully, like me, after learning about wholesome homemade pet food and the benefits of wholesome nutrition, you too will realize the insanity of feeding the enzyme depleted and nutritionally inadequate foods made from overly processed ingredients that a carnivore would never eat in the wild known as commercial pet food"

I'm sure many will agree, i've read this article quite some time ago... then again, for the sake of convenient AND especially the smell of thier litter will definately cause many to decide to go back to regular kibble diet... Anyways, for those who opt for BARF diets, remember to advance your deworming schedule =)
*

The waste of pets who being fed on wholesome raw meat diet has very little odor but the signs of detoxification can include increase in amount and smell of gas, bad breath, body odour, strong urine or feces smell...and more.

"Detoxification is part of a natural healing process whereby the body eliminates toxins.

Toxins can be found in foods that contain poor quality ingredients, preservatives, additives, artificial flavorings, artificial colorings, and other unwanted fillers."

"Once you begin feeding a raw meat diet, the body will naturally expel worms when the body has reached a point where the body's level of health and immune system is strong enough."

"Many people need to give their pets a deworming pill to get rid of the worms. Unfortunately, these deworming pills only address the symptoms. When you see worms leave the body without the use of medication, people become believers in the importance of wholesome food. People begin to understand how wholesome food helps, at a simple level, the body's own natural healing ability."

"If you feed a commercial pet food diet or any type of cooked meat diet then our dogs and cats will always be susceptible to worms because any type of cooked meat diet shuts down the digestive system, begins to create mucous and an unhealthy environment within the body which in turn creates the perfect habitat for worms. But, when you feed a raw meat diet, the body keeps itself clean and the worms no longer have a suitable host body."

"Homemade pet food is not hard to make, it is in fact easy and childishly simplistic with a ridiculously quick and simple proven method. You can be lazy and still make homemade pet food with minimal effort, that's right, I said minimal effort"

"Feeding 1 meal per day to your mature pets makes life more convenient for us because we can leave, during the day or overnight, if necessary and not have to worry about our pets. Feeding one meal per day gives you some additional freedom and creates less work for you.

Some people don't feel comfortable feeding just one meal per day because they are thinking of their pets as if they were human — but your pets is not human, they are a carnivore. Never loose sight of this."

"If we control the amount of food our carnivore friends eat, then they are not getting their full meal. Carnivores can eat a huge amount of food — a whopping amount to be exact.

But many, failing to realize the carnivore is meant to eat a huge meal — or due to fears — fail to feed their carnivore friends all the food they should eat.

When we feed a wholesome raw meat diet, we want our pets to walk away from the bowl with some food left in it and then go back for small amounts more over the next 2 or 3 hours. Many cats do this in nature — they kill their prey, eat a huge amount, then wait for some room in their stomach and then eat some more of their prey.

If we control the amount they need, we are starving them of nutrition. Our pets are not starving for food, but they are starving for nutrition.

Embrace the fact that your carnivore friends have a ridiculously huge stomach and that they are meant to eat a ridiculously huge meal, but only once per day for adults."

Fitrah, I agree with you. Raw diet ftw!

unfortunately I don't have the time to feed my cats raw everyday, but I do give them raw chicken neck, gizzards, hearts and carcasses a few times a week to replace their regular kibble diet. As long as the meat is washed properly, it's okay. My cats are worm free and they love exercising their jaws.
I don't feed them raw often enough to notice much change in their poo, but from what I've read, others report that there is less poo produced and is much less smelly.
and contrary to popular belief, RAW bones are easily tackled by cats. it's the cooked ones that are dangerous as they are softer and more likely to splinter. I sometimes get chicken carcasses very cheaply from the market and they devour everything - ribs, spines and all.

ps. I prefer the Raw Meaty Bones diet. I don't see much point in feeding minced meat to cats when they can easily chew through the whole thing.

Thanks and it's awesome to know you're feeding wholesome raw meat diet to your cats as well smile.gif

Yes, you're right, raw bones provide good exercise for the teeth and jaws plus are important for clean and healthy teeth, are good source of nutrients and are enjoyed by most cats and dogs.

While cooked bones are more brittle and harder to digest and give rise to increased risk of obstruction or penetration of the bowel.

"I would like to quickly mention that you should never feed cooked bones to your dog or cat because they can splinter. If the bone splinters, it can get stuck in the throat, stomach, intestinal tract, etc requiring emergency surgery. Fresh bones have not been exposed to oxygen for too long and thus are, relatively speaking, soft and supple. But old bones can splinter due to oxidation."

P.S. "Over the years, I have noticed that cats eating ground meat tend to eat more slowly as they have to pick small morsels of ground meat with their incisors, which is not how a cat normally eats. As a result, cats eating ground meat tend to eat smaller meals and tend to eat their meals more slowly. However, I have found that cats eating chunks of meat tend to eat their food faster. Feeding meat chunks to cats allows them to eat more naturally. The cat will grab the meat chunk and then break the meat chunk down to the size they need with their molars before swallowing. This ultimately allows the cat to eat a larger meal faster. This in turn helps to ensure the cat is more satisfied which helps to eliminate the habit of free feeding."

It's nice to know you're also feeding your cats wholesome raw meat diet smile.gif

"Cats have the ability to cut chunks of meat into a size that they can swallow. Cats will chew the meat chunks with their molars and literally cut the meat into the size they need to swallow. As a result, the size of the meat chunk you feed to a cat really doesn't matter. As long as the cat can get its mouth over the meat, the cat will begin to cut off a piece of meat. Although cats can cut their meat themselves quite well, feeding them reasonable size chunks of meat does help them eat more faster.

Don't feed your cat as if it is an human infant. A cat doesn't need you to cut the meat up into super small sizes. Doing so will just waste your time. Cats can swallow, relatively speaking, large pieces of meat."
