4GB is more than enough... Some people here are exaggerating already. Most games will usually takes up 1.5GB to 1.8GB of RAM. Windows 7 will take up another 1.5GB.. All in all, it still takes less than 4GB of RAM.

Don't rely on task manager for real RAM usage. In computer, OS will use all of your RAM for cache to speed system up.

So let say u got 8GB RAM installed, you only use 3.4GB at that time but actually your real RAM usage could be 7GB+ already. OS are made this way to utilise as much RAM as possible and that why some of your program start up faster after the first time.

Not sure how to see this in Windows but in Linux, you can actually see the real ram usage using some program like htop or z.

Bro... where did you get that idea? No doubt your system will detect your 8GB RAM but if no programs are open, it will definitely not take up your RAM space...

I guess it's best if BF3 players here with 8GB of RAM tell us what's the RAM usage like & if there's any improvement? If there is, I would top up another 4GB too!! biggrin.gif

I screenshot this from my dedicated server. You can see almost all 8GB gone and near to using the HDD swap memory while the memory in the so call task manager reports 4GB left.

I asked around awhile back and that is what people told me.

I'm not sure about Windows but I bet they sure do cache or paging like Linux. The theory was, you got the space, why dont utilise it rather than have it empty?

I can see it uses around 3.0GB of RAM but your swap space is not utilized ma... It's still 7.94Gb free wor.

Swap and RAM usage are different as Swap area is not RAM, it's just a space in your HDD that are used to emulate RAM

anyways here is for windows

Yes it's different. Windows will not use Swap area if you have sufficient amount of RAM.
