First, check your BIOS setting for tracking feature (LoJack for Laptops).
Second, you could install http://preyproject.com/ Third, I dont think you should rely on the first two options if your laptop contains sensitive data. Use Truecrypt or Bitlocker for full disk encryption (this is not tracking feature stuff). After all, why bother tracking the stolen good if our police officers dont want to spend some effort for recovery? EDIT: I forgot to mention, once you turn on Computrace (LoJack) option at BIOS, you can't turn it off. This might be an issue if you plan to sell your good in future. Next, please note that the first two options also can be disabled easily by 'experienced' thief. Example, they wipe the HDD clean before using it or they might no have internet access which render the IP tracking useless. This post has been edited by JohnLai: Oct 23 2011, 03:51 PM |

lojack will reinstall after format. but if they update bios, it won't install untill reconfigure again. disable boot from usb in bios to prevent bios update.

How about LogMeIN?
If your laptop has been stolen, you may control you PC and open the webcam. But, it only effective if the laptop is not formated yet. For a prevention, create a BIOS password and disable boot from CD/DVD drive,USB and network. THe stealer will not able to boot to cd for formatting process. Be sure to REMEMBER THE PASSWORD! |

QUOTE(Sai91 @ Oct 23 2011, 03:32 PM) hi guys.. If you're buying a laptop, buy a model that comes with Intel VPro.is there any anti theft security..like our laptop being rob..then we activate the software using internet..soo we can know the laptop designated position? The Intel VPro comes with TPM - Trusted Platform Module chip which enables Full Disk Encryption. Next is to purchase apps that uses TPM, the difference between other apps and apps that uses TPM is, TPM is almost impossible to crack. It stores the key in the chip itself. In case your laptop is stolen, the person may not be able to access the PC at all, only format it, however remotely when the PC is turned on and has internet connection, you may be able to delete files and detect the location. |
