Hi guys.

im a noob here

erm... i just got my laptop last week and i am very excited to use it at my uni

but the problem is, my internet connection will be almost exclusively wifi. be it at uni or my hostel.

being in a place full of students, i can't help it but feel a bit insecure.
the thought of some random person sniffing at my connection and obtaining my personal details terrify me.

im a bit paranoid now blush.gif i don't even dare to log into my hotmail account.

so the question i wan to ask is, is it possible to encrypt my wifi connection?
i had heard of VPN but im just a student, so i a bit reluctant to spend money
how bout Tor? is it effective?

any suggestions/tips guys? blush.gif

Your concerns are valid.
Be it at uni or any public wifi, the threat is very high if you're doing more than casual browsing.
By Casual Browsing I mean, more than reading websites without any logins. Doing online banking or any websites that require a password through a public wifi is just as dangerous.

TOR is FREE, but slow. Super slow.
If you want to maintain your surfing experience but remain safe, than you need to spend a bit on VPN such as local ones like BolehVPN or HideMyAss.
You can google for the pricing.

What you do is, before you start to suft, connect to the VPN server. Hence, all traffice will be encrypted.

This is the solution you may use.

RaptorVPN im using this (clientless setup). Encrypt your network. Recommended if on public wifi.
Ultrasurf Fast and mostly use. Encrypt your connection through internet. Recommended for anonymity.
Cocoon Add On for mozilla, no installation needed. Recommended for anonymity.

Hope it may help.

MissIceRina,

Anyone concerned about their privacy. Internet nowwadays is a bit unsecured since a lot of students and most of us interested about hacking
and sniffing.

Im suggests you to use VPN service.
Try RaptorVPN. Its for anonymity and encrypting your data.

If you have a question, feel free to PM me.
