i've tried rooting using doomlord's method, does not work. in the end, i've flashed modded kernel using odin, yes, now my binary count has increased.
i think the best to avoid binary increase is to reflash ur current stock ics to gb and root using doomlord and put in the cwm as described in the pdf. i haven't tried this yet... but as long as you have the cwm inside, u're good to flash custom ics dy.
or if you're not too concerned with the binary (until the day u nid to send ur phone for warranty), u can just flash the modded kernel with cwm and then flash the custom ics. let me know if you needed the steps i've used.
thanks to wira_lover for the steps previously

if you are on gingerbread 2.3.6 now, and have already increased binary counter, get it reset using a usb jig, flash stock ICS, and follow the steps posted earlier. guaranteed to not have that counter increased. USB jig for now doesnt work on the ICS bootloader for the time being, hopefully its possible soon.
for best results, try flashing stock ICS then LP7 , then CM9.
