in normal circumstance, it should work even without the casing, i believe if you use it long enough without the casing, the static will eventually build up and you will have the weird problem again. Since you have the problem right after you sent it in, maybe you should re-send it to them and be specific regarding the problems you faced. Maybe you could turn it off, pull the battery up and leave it overnight? It should leave the phone plenty of time to discharge the static.
