currently my pc is connected online (on celcom 3G) through my usb tethered iphone.
can i upgrade my iphone iOS with this sole internet connection? i fear that i'll lose internet connection while validating the installation/restoration of iOS. i'm not sure if the iphone can run independently as a modem itself. pls help This post has been edited by Skylinestar: Oct 14 2011, 04:01 PM |

Just finished updating my iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 5 on my 3GS.
It was a painless update (my update to iOS 4.3 was a nightmare). I manually load the IPSW file into the "iPhone Software Updates" folder and launch the update in iTunes. Update took about 30 minutes to complete. Currently all my contacts in phone book still remain intact (this is the most important), but all my apps are gone. Now, I'm syncing back all the apps from iTunes. I'm wondering is it because these apps are not tested for iOS5 compatibility, thus Apple doesn't wanna sync it? Also found an amazing discovery of iOS5... When syncing, if you accept an incoming phone call, the syncing will still progress, unlike iOS4 which will disconnect the sync. |

QUOTE(azbro @ Oct 15 2011, 03:57 PM) Apps are gone bro...restore only makes it worst thats if you didn't do it immediately After syncing everything back, everything is normal again. I didn't lose anything from the apps. Even those file manager type apps have my imported files in in, remain intact.Good news is, can start fresh All my sms, photos, musics, bookmarks, apps...everything...are back to normal. QUOTE(keaizer @ Oct 15 2011, 04:09 PM) i see lot of trouble come from manually update 'IPSW' file..true?..because download n update tru itunes no problem at all no trouble.just paste the IPSW file into Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. in iTunes, just check for updates and it'll automatically detect the newer iOS5, then proceed with backup, update & restore of iOS. it'll not download the whole chuck of ~700MB IPSW file from the internet anymore cos u already have it in the pc. Painless update for me. for me, the whole update took 30 minutes on my old Centrino 1.4GHz & 512MB RAM laptop. |

Another amazing discovery on iOS5:
When you're viewing lost SMS conversation in Message, when you scroll up, the keyboard will auto-hide, thus allowing more viewing space of previous conversation bubble. When u scroll down, keyboard will reappear. |

I'm 3GS user running iOS 5. So far so good. There's no lag in typing SMS.
After upgrade from iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 5, the phone feels faster and smoother than before. It's like a newly reformatted pc. Normally, when a device upgrade to a newer OS, the device become more laggy (iOS 4 more laggy than iOS 3). But this is the total opposite. iOS 5 is faster than iOS 4, and that's on an old 3GS. That's what I call an excellent OS. |

QUOTE(victorian @ Oct 18 2011, 07:51 PM) can't say like that. i think it depends on luck. last time upgrading from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 brick my iphone (maxis set) too.with every iOS update, there are definitely lots of people facing this problems. my luck is with me this time, successfully updated 4.2.1 to 5. in my opinion, apple should come out with a service for software update at apple store. if the update brick the device, apple should settle our problem for free. |
