I'm looking for jianpu music notation software. Two days of searching on the net turns up only S-Music from http://www.a1soft.com/smusic/index.htm.

It has a few good points
1. free
2. portable, does not require install, just run the exe
3. simple and easy to use, does it's job well
4. relatively quick and easy input

It has a few problems
1. there's no import or export, only saves it's own internal smned file format
2. I can't find any other program that reads it's smned format
3. does not play back the song
4. no midi input

The biggest problem is (1) and (2). I cannot import songs from other formats, and would have to retype it in. Once I typed them in, the songs would be "locked" in this format, as there's no export function, and other programs don't read it's format.

There's a ton of old chinese music printed in jianpu notation. Surely there's got to be a few popular jianpu program right? Or is my problem I don't read/write chinese, and perhaps "jianpu" is the wrong term to search under.

In case anyone wonders what is jianpu, it looks like this. You've probably seen it.

3 5 - 32 | 3 5 - 32 | 3 5 - 35 | 6 - - -

I found some software that supports ABC notation. If there's a jianpu to/from abc converter, I'll be very happy. smile.gif The problem with abc is I find it hard to sight read. The same song above looks like this in abc.

I just found out that jianpu is chinese music notation a few days back. So I wondered if there is a software to write jianpu. I am not looking for something that would playback the notation I input. I am looking for something that help me record and a tune that is on my mind. Something that I can add on later.

I am not schooled in chinese but I pick up a few chinese characters. I look up jianpu and got a few more softwaret. This site http://jianpu.starising.com/jianpu-notation-software.php recommended 4 software. One is not free and one is the one you mentioned. So there is 2 more for you to check out.

If you want to playback I suggest you write it yourself. dkk, I remember you help me in a lot of my learn vb thread. I wrote a playback to learn how to play songs my teacher gives me some time ago but I lost the file in a virus attack. The method I use is the good old "beep" statement in basica but still works on vb. There is two input for the beep. One is frequency and the other is time in 1/100 sec. What you need is to convert notes to htz. I previously got this formula from wikipedia.

I did a sequential file. Consisting of a pair of data which is the frequency and the timing. The beep will take the notes and timing from the sequential file. It is a bit of a pain since you need create special notation higher notes. You can consider the idea if it is for self use.
