I am using IDE HDD and it is not big enough. I am thinking of adding another one. Since my motherboard supports both IDE & SATA, I'm thinking of giving a shot at Hitachi's..
Is Hitachi really good? Is it possible to connect SATA with IDE? What if IDE is the master?
I might not know how to connect it since both hv different systems.  sweat.gif

so far i use quite okay (1year+) im using 80GB Hitachi Sata2 8MB but just now i tryied benchmark it. the results obtain is not tat satisfied (average transfer rate at 43MBps, Burst Rate 110+-, access time 17ms+- is it normal??) is there any place to make sure my hdd runs at 3Gbps? or is there a place for me to set the HDD performance? however my current HDD temp is 31 celcius...

my maxtor 40 gb hdd spoilt after 1 year + sobsob >.<" i bought it during end of Sept back in 2004. According to the PC shop which sold me this HDD... maxtor only start to provide 3 years warranty @ the begin of Oct. 2004 Zzzz.... now it's spoilt... 2 weeks ago, i bought another seagate HDD from the same PC shop to replace my old one, dis time they promise that it's providing 3 years warranty...
btw, wat's the different between SATA III & normal SATA? the technician told me this SATA III is running as SATA with my motherboard with no different... is it correct ?
*
Correction : SATA 2 not 3.
Sata's transfer at 150MB/s while Sata2 at 300MB/s. and yes, tats reverse compatibility because ur board only can support SATA so the SATA2 would run at 150MB/s.

Hitachi is more towards performance, no doubt about it
Currently bought my Seagate 320GB SATA II 16MB 7200rpm cache from My PC for only RM365

Cheaper than Startec on that day, Startec was RM10 higher in price

Seagate is the King among the same level HDD (performance + longer warranty)... about the Samsung ah... hmmm the benchmark score was not tat impressive due to its lower buffer value (8MB) if compare with the other in the same price range. but its good in low temp and low noise. got this info from D.I.Y zone.

Max cap. i know is 1terabyte...
its an external storage build up buy 4 HDD using RAID...
u really mean 120terrabyte?? or typo error.. 1.20terabyte???
120tb is impossible maybe...

sooner or later its gonna comes true. tongue.gif according to San Jose Research Center conducted by Hitachi, they had first raised the density of single disk to 230Gbit/square inch which is equal to 250GB (roughly). since most of the manufacturer today had master the skill of compacting 4~5 disks into a harddisk, therefore perhaps end of next year it would be time for the 1.2TB HDD to be borned. rclxms.gif

wah... all these posts about maxtor dying make me worried cos i just bought a brand new maxtor sataII 160gb. it says it's manufactured in august in china. am weary about these china mari goods. but my hdd is cool, only around 32-35C. also have an older seagate 40GB 5400rpm which is 38C. i bought a brand new hitachi deskstar 80GB which can hit 40C!

i really hope my drive will last at least its full warranty period.

my bro's three disks all died recently, really weird, all about the same time... seagate 2.5" and samsung and then the maxtor also showing signs of going out.

IMO, all hdds give out, just donno sooner or later... maybe depend on luck also huh? like buying car... just keep fingers crossed we get a good one.

just love wat you bought tongue.gif . i had indeed heard alot of ppl complaining for thier Maxtor, but u might be the lucky one though. it doesn't mean anything that comes from china sux although most of the time they are tongue.gif my 80GB Sata2 hitachi's temp is around 32~35 in air-con room, 39 in non-aircon room. maybe u need a small fan to blow the heat away. as for the 3 disks knocked out in the same time i think its not something to do with luck but something to do with the motherboard eh. BTW, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB is the strongest now flex.gif (compared with the same level HDD by D.I.Y zone)

how come barely no one reply to this?
QUOTE(ianho @ Oct 3 2006, 04:56 AM)
Anyway, as u can c in my signature, I haf a really puny HDD at only 80gb. Y so small? Well, I only store games in my rig. All other data is put into my external HDD. I've just run out of space for my games so I'm looking to get a new HDD or mebe even a couple.

I don't need much storage as even big games r only about 4gb average n even the 36gb Raptor can hold bout 10 games. Here's what I've been thinking. A SATA2 80gb is only rm170. A 36gb Raptor is rm385. A SATA2 16mb cache 320gb is rm365.
Let's say I set my budget at rm400. What would be best bang for buck?
1. A single 36gb Raptor.
2. 2x80gb in RAID 0.
3. A single 320gb.

The Raptor is fastest at 10k RPM but only has a puny 36gb. 80gb is not that fast but will it be almost as fast as the Raptor if we RAID 0 2x80gb? Or will a single 320gb HDD whoop options 1 n 2 simply coz it has higher areal density? What do u guys think? Which wud be fastest?
*
like u said, u don need much storage. so just go for 36GB raptor. but for me, i'll go for 300GB Seagate. two reasons, 1)5 years warranty, 2)impressive benchmark results i saw before and its on top of the rest (WD, SS) and Maxtor is close to it but heard too many ppl complaining bout maxtor. i don think there would be much improvement as for the 36GB Raptor in real life gaming. lets just say the price/performance is not right for me.

thanks. normal small fan like 5-8cm is sufficient??

lol i tot samsung using liquid bearing.... though is hotter than other...

@yehlai
do u think tat liquid thingy would leak or not? recently i open up my 2-yeald-old 80GB Samsung and found out tat there is something greasy/oily around the core there. any idea?
