i got this hard disk from dell..got it from one of my uncle..after installed it..it is dam noisy, especially when a loading aplication, game or program, can hear the hdd spinning sound..it is a 160gb seagate hdd..
iz it normal for hdd to have this sound?? because my other hdd (maxtor, western digital) never have this type of problem, no sound at all, very silence...
ps: sukhoi37 remember me in bs?
i think usually, OEM HD is of poor quality, regardless of brand...i think companies like DELL, HP etc, paid peanuts for rejected HDD from the hard disk manufacturers in order to maximize profits.iz it normal for hdd to have this sound?? because my other hdd (maxtor, western digital) never have this type of problem, no sound at all, very silence...
ps: sukhoi37 remember me in bs?
I've also 1 old 15GB Seagate OEM from a HP machine, noisy like hell, slow and can roast chicken if you touch it. (No joking! they should put a label like "DON'T TOUCH WHILE HDD IS IN OPERATION! HEAT WARNING!").
Anyway, IMO, I still think Seagate HDD is the best. I've a few of them, 5 years, 3 years, 2 years, 1 year, all excellent condition.
Also, sometimes it really depends on your other condition, etc, a good PSU is really the number 1 factor in extending the lifespan of your PC. El-cheapo PSU can cause all kinda damages in the long run. If you use el-cheapo PSU, you can check with some software and see that the power is not stable and always goes up and down. With a good PSU, the power is stable and your machine rarely ever hangs.
other factors like heat is another factor. if your casing is like a microwave oven stuff to the brim and you run 24/7, of course your HDD will die faster!
So perhaps, you guys should also tell how you run your HDD so that a clearer picture and more useful info can be analysed here.
Anyway, here's my take:
Item 1
=====
1) 120GB Seagate - 3yrs plus
2) 20GB Seagate - 5 yrs plus
PC -
430W ChiefTec PSU ( quite a good PSU, PC never hangs ever since i switched to it from my old-cheap PSU)
Casing - Tower ATX , with lots of room to spare and about 5 casing fans.
Usage - Avg 2 hours/day.
Item 2
=====
1) 40GB Seagate - 2 yrs
PC
Cheap PSU that comes with ATX casing
Casing - ATX Mini-Tower, avg room with no additional casing fan
Usage - very rare!! 1 hrs/week??
Item 3
=====
1) 80GB Seagate - 1 yrs+
XBOX
- use as HDD replacement for my XBOX
- cramp as hell, no room inside the XBOX casing and what fan?? LOL.
Usage - 3hrs/week
If there's 1 brand that i won't buy, it gotta be Maxtor...there's so many problems with Maxtor HDD from my client office...i think many people has bad experience with them.
